These are the Spring rankings from a year ago. I suspect Ottawa, with two picks in the first round will move up just as much as the leafs do. However if they do pull the trigger on the rumoured trades of high priced players, the leafs could move up a lot more than you might think, depending on the return.

I would say its from after March 2015 since the leafs have this listed
Key Additions: Brendan Leipsic (Trade - NSH)

Sens look weak in prospects

When you are a Stanley Cup contender, your roster is generally filled with talent across the board. Roster improvements usually need to occur at the margins – your bottom-six forwards, your third-pairing defensemen, and the like. So, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that the Bolts locked down arguably the league’s best fourth-line forward in Erik Condra, and at an unbelievable price of 3-years, $1.25MM AAV. We have talked about Erik Condra in the past, but it bears repeating. His career Corsi% (53.1%) is identical to skaters the talent of Nicklas Backstrom, David Backes, and Jakub Voracek. His career goals against per 60 (team relative) is second to ... not a single player in the National Hockey League. His contracts are regularly kept low because he’s a very weak individual shooter, but there’s no doubt about the kind of positive impact he has on his teammates.

Could be worse.......we could have traded our best player for B level prospects and conditional picks, while still having to eat salary

And hurting the local Hot Dog industry in toronto..........

The hot dog vendor who parks daily at Front and John Sts. just lost his most reliable customer.

Almost every afternoon at 2:30 p.m., often wearing a toque, Phil Kessel would wander from his neighbourhood condominium to consume his daily snack.

And now he’s gone.

it's not that silly.......it's not like they let hoffman or stone walk. yes, condra is a good role player, but they have to make room on the roster for the young guys who are ready (prince, puempel, etc). nobody is touching neil or greening, so condra was the obvious choice to let go.

having puempel or prince in the lineup instead of condra is definitely a step backwards defensively, but probably an almost equal step forward offensively. ottawa's top 3 lines are pretty good, so i'm not gonna sweat about the 8-9 minutes a night that condra plays.

the priority was to re-sign our RFAs, while not putting the team in cap hell. mission accomplished.

The Leafs. Ottawa's window has shut completely. THey need to rebuild, but can't admit that to themselves though.

The Leafs are already rebuilding, and have much better coaching and management.

The current roster for the Senators is better than the Leafs simply because they don't have any player / contract issues. The core of the team is young, competitive and possess one of the best D-man in the league. As long as Bryan Murray can keep the core together, they should remain competitive for years to come.

On the other hand, the Leafs are better with regards to youth coming up into the system. They have a hand full of very talented offensive players who will eventually make an NHL roster. Nylander, Kapanen, Harrington and Marner are elite prospects who will develop through the Leafs system for another couple years before earning a full time roster spot.

That being said, the Senators have nobody in their system who can compete with these guys. Players like Lazar are still young, but they have already earned full-time positions with the NHL squad. The prospect tank is empty for the Senators, who will need to take advantage of draft day opportunities in upcoming years.

All in all, the Leafs are in a world of hurt and still struggle to deal off some of their more expensive pieces. With all this going on, I find it hard to imagine the Leafs having a strong season. I expect a good effort from the boys in blue, but they will probably fall into the 10 or 11 spot in the East. The Senators will probably finish one or two positions higher than the Leafs. If they do make the playoffs, it will be a 7 or 8 spot at best.

Are you saying the leafs are better off with Nick Spaling, Kasperi Kapanen, Scott Harrington, plus first- and third-round picks from 2016, plus retaining $1.2 million of Kessel’s salary in each of the next seven seasons..............or would you rather have Tyler Seguin & Dougie Hamilton?

We dont know how the trade will play out yet, is it the return I hoped for..not really.
Kessel could flame out in a few seasons, Kapanen could turn out to be a solid top 6, the leafs could draft another solid prospect.

I think its better than the Sens getting Zero for Alfredson

Hey Check it out

http://www.hockeysfuture....er-losers-weekends-draft/

Winners

For a team that doesn’t officially employ a General Manager, the dynamic duo of Kyle Dubas and Mark Hunter didn’t waste any time putting their stamp on the organization. Having long been connected to London Knights forward Mitch Marner, they made the selection official at fourth overall and then made a series of moves to acquire additional talent. Originally slotted to pick 24th overall, the Leafs traded down twice and added two more picks to finalize the return from the Cody Franson deal. The Leafs continued their tradition of drafting from the OHL’s Erie Otters by taking defenseman Travis Dermott, and then closed out the second round on undersized but dynamic winger Jeremy Bracco.

The Leafs continued to draft for skill, finally putting the antiquated notion that size was of great importance by selecting high-risk, high-reward forwards in Dmytro Timashov and Nikita Korostelev, both widely considered to be selected much higher than they actually were. The organizational shift in assessing and evaluating talent resulted in one of the best drafts the Leafs have had in recent memory.

It’s hard to argue that any other team got more value for their picks than Toronto, who managed to select a number of players in this draft more than 50 spots behind where they were ranked by NHL Central Scouting. With Brendan Shanahan guiding the team, Dale Hunter and Kyle Dubas splitting draft duties, and prized Head Coach Mike Babcock on the staff, the Maple Leafs may finally be turning a corner.

That was not the Senators decision, Alfredsson was an UFA.

Plus he was at the end of his career, and Kessel is not, so not a fair comparison.

Maybe compare the return for Spezza?

But do you think the leaf would have been better off with Seguin and Hamilton today?
