Horachek didn't change anything.

The leafs situation right now is just as toxic as the Oilers. The core has been together for 3 to 4 years and haven't done anything to suggest they should be kept together. Reilly is the only untouchable. Ground floor rebuild is the only option.

They have pieces that can fetch them some nice building blocks but they have to be smart cause they only have the one chance.

Need to go immediately. I listen to offers for Kessel and Jvr but it has to be juicy. Keep the Nylander kid. Retain maybe Bozak and Komorov.

They have a long long road ahead of them if the want to be considered even a remotely success on ice team. Right now, the Sens have the edge.

stats suggest otherwise

Carlyle was fired because the leafs were already into their downward spirale. Let's not forget that.

the entire team has stopped scoring. these last 30 games aren't the norm.

Seems like it IS the norm with that team to crash and burn at one point or another. They did the same last year.

I love how every canadian now matter where from can totally break down the leafs situation at all times.

You do lay it out pretty well, imo.

now do the Flyers. for real. I would appreciate the perspective

Well yeah, the Leafs are awful and have been for a long time. It's been extremely rare for this team to crash and burn offensively for any significant amount of time though. I find it interesting that somehow the last 30 games are statistically more significant than the prior 100+ where both Kessel and JVR were essentially point a game players. What happened 30 games ago? The team changed coaches.

I'm not even meaning to only direct that at you, most people including Leafs fans seem to be thinking like this. Dump Kessel, trade JVR, etc etc. It's a bit crazy what 30 games can do.

The Leafs didn't go from a good team to a bad team with the coaching change but they did go from a top offensive team to a bottom offensive team with that change. Seriously, I think they were top 3-5 in goals per game before the change and have been dead last in that category since.. even behind Buffalo.

They've been a good offensive team just about every year with Carlyle so I don't think it was a fluke and now this is the norm.

I'd keep Kadri. Likely low value right now, but the underlying stats are reflective of a 1st liner. Unless they're getting a great return for him, moving him now would be silly. Giving him an opportunity next season with others traded away will at least make him a more tradeable asset.

They are discussed on every major national network around the clock no matter their status or standing and are shown more then every other team as well. If you include the pre NHL centre ice era I've probably seen as many Leafs and Habs games then the Bruins. And if you go all the way back to my childhood before TSN was really national CBC was it for hockey.

I'd keep Kadri but then Kessel has to go to signal who you're hitching your wagon too. Phil is an elite scorer but he needs much different pieces around him to justify his wage in terms of constructing a winner. Toews level pieces. Not gonna happen. But freeing up $8m in cap space and getting valuable assets in return as well must be enticing to Shanahan. Especially considering the type of player he was.

the Flyers are undergoing an identity crisis. They seem to have too many silent leaders and really lack any kind of presence on the back end. I believe Rextall will straighten it out quickly. He made some really nice moves at the deadline.

Nonis was shopping him around last summer, so I'd be surprised that he'd now be in their future plans, with the scorched earth thingy.

IF they hold to their publicly stated total re-build, who would you like the leafs to draft in 2017, and how will be be better than any other draftee that year?

That's a guess on your part. I say that about JVR because his history suggests he's not a 9 points in 30 games type player. He had 116 points in his last 140 games prior to the coaching change. That's a 68 point pace over a pretty significant amount of time.

Well we know there are no leafs capable of scoring more goal than him, this season so far, perhaps Kessel gets a hat-trick tonight when they beat the Sens eh?

Nylander's 0.72ppg is one of the best paces an 18 year old has put up in the AHL in the last 40 years.

And Rundblad was gong to be a superstar from Sweden, before he came to the NHL.

Not sure to be honest, article only mentions that he's the 6th best since '74... but I'd assume that list includes Boston's Pastrnak.

Rundblad was also a few years older than Nylander... numbers at the same age don't even compare... but why would you go with a fair comparison, eh?

http://theahl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=5805

Very interesting, in his first month, he only had 2 points in 4 games (.5ppg)
In the second month he improved his pace to just over that with 7 in 12.

Now he has 8 points in his last 8 games played(counting today's).

Seems like he's getting used to the north american game pretty quickly.

Actually got to watch Pastmak live last week.

Just pointing out that there were high expectations for other Swedes, before they'd even played a game in the NHL, Rundblad came to mind, and there was Fabian Burnsham(?) or something like that..........

Point is, don't anoint Nylander the next messiah until you see him play at the NHL level.
