Wow, haven't seen you around in awhile...it's probably been, oh, around the time the Ducks were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. That's kind of a weird coincidence, I guess...

LOL. Who is this core you speak of? The only good player that the Sens have signed long term is Spezza, and he's so overrated and overpaid it's not funny.

EDIT - and obviously Alfredsson, but he's on his last legs. He'll be 38 next season. You can't really expect him to compete at 100% anymore. His play will likely be declining in a hurry over the next few seasons.

If you go to school in the morning that's not full-time r-tard.

Stop trying to make it look like you have a life.

Spezza as you pointed out
Alfredsson three more years
Michalek four more years
Fisher three more years
Neil three more years
Regin, Winchester, Campoli, Foligno, all RFAs and should be signed over the summer

If that's a core that a team has locked up long term, they're screwed.

Alfredsson is old, declining game, and near retirement. He's 38 next year, and 40 when that contract expires. That should put him in the top 4 or 5 oldest players in the game.
Neil - LOL.
The rest? Decent players. But if you're considering that your "core", that is locked up long-term, you won't win much of anything.

With that post? Neither. I was advocating having better players than that on your roster if you want to compete with the best teams in the league.

I'm asking whether or not you are for or against long term contracts..........and if LTCs are, or are not essential to building a team to compete for the Cup.

But if you prefer to defer to the threads topic.............do you believe the Senators or the leafs are in a better position right now, going forward through the draft and the off season UFA market and heading into their respective training camps.

Depends on the contract. Long-term contracts for overpaid players are bad. Long-term contracts that are good value for the player are good. I don't think long-term contracts are necessary to win a cup. but many of the best players in the NHL get long-term contracts, and those players are necessary. It's not the contract itself, it's the player in conjunction with that contract that matters. Spezza at $7M? Not much of an asset. Spezza at $5M would be a much better asset. Gomez at $3M? that would be a pretty good asset. Gomez at $7M+? Liability.

The second question, you have to expand on what you're asking. You ask which team is in a better position, right now. Clarify, which team is in a better position right now, to compete with the best teams in what timeline?

If you're talking about competing next year, then the Sens are in a better position (as crappy as that position is, the Leafs are obviously in a worse spot). If you're talking a little further down the line, 2 or 3 years or more, then the Leafs.
