I spend 1/2 my time in the States. The number 1 subject for discussion by Americans about Toronto is Rob Ford. My comment is always the same. Rob Ford and Toronto are a perfect match. For the last 10 years Rob Ford and the Leafs are symbolic of a city that celebrates its losers.

Maybe that's because they stick out here. In Ottawa, being a loser means you're just blending in with the crowd.

So I guess all the leaf fans who come to Ottawa for tomorrow's game, can all say their collective good bye to Randy Carlye.

It's looking like Pete DeBoer may very well be brought in to get Kelly Clarkson back on track.

Not a poor choice. Leafs fans are craving a bit of defensive hockey I think.

He is going to have his work cut out for him, with all the players with long term, un-tradeable contracts, who have not shown any inclination to play defensively to date.

that's a stretch.
Off the top of my head,

Kulemin, Clarkson, Bozak, Gunnarsson are all pretty solid defensive players.

JVR sees PK time as well... Phaneuf has learned to be a stronger defensive guy, though he was leaned on far too much this season, Gleason is defense-first. McClement is pretty good at it to. Bolland too, if he's back.

While the players aren't the perfect group, the big problem was the disconnect between what the coach was supposed to bring, and what the team did.

A leafs fan saying that is kind of funny. Who is a bigger loser than the leafs over the last 5-10 years

nah, can't get all 3 re-signed and have room for defensive help, I don't think.

Kulemin moved to center late this season, and has done pretty well... I think he and McClement will be back, Bolland will be gone. Waste of a few picks when all's said and done, especially since he barely played, but he wants too much for too long for his role.

Yeah didn't work out well. Not a big loss though.

Its actually a pretty good situation. The number one need is a solid defensive dman. They have too many offensive guys. A guy like Gardiner or franson can be traded, opening up the cap space for one, or for one directly. And they have so manyvguys that can play that role, trading Gardiner or franson won't hurt them in the slightest bit.

Ottawa/Gatineau has been the fourth largest city in terms of population, for quite a while now.

Awesome, now do Vancouver-Lower Mainland. I'll save you some trouble, it was about 1.8 million in the 90's now about 2.8 million. Again, apples and oranges.

Instead of looking at the value of the companies themselves, try figuring out the value of the freight they carry. You're a clown.

Yup. Deboer seems to be Shanahan's choice. His team's possession stats have been great.

Deboer is more Ron Wilson than Carlyle. Followed him pretty close when he was with the Panthers. He can help a poor team be competitive and stay in the mix for a playoff spot. But, no evidence he can win big at the NHL level. Great junior coach.

I think Carlyle is an outstanding coach. I think front office decisions (buyouts, signings) hurt them more than coaching. Afraid the focus on Carlyle is merely a diversion from larger problems.

Why? I'm sure the bathroom attendants at nice restaurants give very wealthy people mints. But they're still bathroom attendants.

Also worth noting that 4 teams need to pass the Leafs in points for them to be knocked out of a playoff spot, whereas the Leafs only need to pass 2 teams to have home-ice advantage.

They're 4 points above the caps(one of the 4 teams that would need to pass them), and only 3 points behind the Lightening.

They're closer to home-ice than they are to missing the playoffs, whereas Ottawa is closer to giving Anaheim a top-5 pick, than they are to making the playoffs.

.

- Feeling Glucky?

Ends up nine teams have passed them, in less than a month, and Ottawa's pick is nowhere near being a top -5 pick, and are looking like they'll finish ahead of the leafs in the final standing of the season (closer to the playoffs than the leafs, but still golfing next week )

Senators ahead of leafs in standings, with a budget too, and Bobby Ryan for the pick.

So it's the Senators, again.

Do you think the Sens owner will spend anywhere near the cap? What happens when Bobby Ryan jumps ship next year?
