well, the Leafs have better coaching, a better GM, a better prospect pool, a more solid NHL d-core, and more roster depth... the Sens do have some actual stars on their team... guys who are actually proven NHLers, and 2 of the guys are still pretty young to.

Right now the Sens are a better team, and have a better chance at making the playoffs next season, but it won't stay that way for long

- Feeling Glucky?

true, and we've established that we have a better future with the College FA we've signed and continue to sign.

you would hate the beir markt in TO then... their poutine isn't made with gravy and cheese curds... it's roquefort with braised short ribs

the Bier Market is full of a bunch of pretentious losers. The one on the Esplanade, anyway. I've only been to the one on King a couple of times, once not even in prime hours. It didn't seem to be quite as bad...

poutine and fancy don't go together. so stop it.
poutine recipe: fries, cheese, gravy.
directions: cook and mix.
simple.
anything else added to this recipe is an attempt to make poutine "classy" and that in itself goes against everything poutine stands for.

Wow looks like the Vegas odds people see Ottawa in a better position than the leafs (at this time) http://www.vegasinsider.com/nhl/odds/futures/ they have the Sens at 35/1 and the leafs at 60/1, to win the Stanley Cup in 2010

Obviously these odds will change after the draft, trades and free agent signing before the next season starts.

- Doppleganger

Sure, but neither stands a shot right now.

I don't think the conversation is about 2010. Since neither are going to win, it's who is likely to have a competitive team first. It's more about the prospects and where they stand as organization.

I don't really care about Ottawa, I like the look of the Leafs. They have a ton of cap room, are always an attractive place for UFA's, are starting to get better youth in their system+ I happen to think they have a terrific management team in place.

How is this even up for debate?

I agree that Ottawa's window probably has closed. But if they choose to rebuild, they are in a completely superior position to do so than the Leafs. I mean, compare their best trade assets with that of the Leafs. It's not even close.

- S Kaspar Rollins

Yeah but they haven't even realized they need to rebuild. It's going to take a few more years of clawing to make the playoffs before they even start to try. And really, what do they have? SPezza and Heatley as trade assets. Both are overpaid, unfortunately for them. There really isn't anything else on their roster that is all that great at all. Alfie is getting up there in age.

Eventually you'll realize the window for the sens is closed. I think sens fans will start to question the team by the end of next season. Another year of borderline playoff hockey and you'll realize the team needs 2 top Dmen, another top notch center, and maybe a goalie, to compete with teams like Pitt and Philly (all the top teams have at least 2 A list centers and an A list Dman.). The sens don't have the cap room to sign them, and aren't getting high enough draft picks to draft them. They're stuck in the limbo region of borderline playoffs that the leafs were stuck in for years after the lockout.

Do you think they'll be competitive for the best in the East next year? No way. How old is Alfie in 2 years? He won't be a cornerstone piece anymore soon enough. If you can even still call him that now. He's heavily on the decline.

Just a little bit condescending there

Very few Sens fans think this team will be a cup contender next season. The holes in the roster you're pointing out are all valid, but i think u underestimate the talent on this team. If a few guys like Smith and Kelly are cleared out, suddenly there is enough cap room to land a top pair defenseman or a second line centre.

Who knows, maybe Murray does deal one of his four big contracts, and theres more money to throw around, nevermind what he gets in return.

The Sens are a few years away from being contenders again, but Murray is retooling the right way. He didn't panic and trade any big names, he solidified the biggest hole on the team and has a kid named Eric Karleson set to quarterback the powerplay in a season or two.

Just a slightly different situation the Leafs found themselves in after the lockout

I don't think they'll compete with the best in the East next year (Philly, Boston, Pittsburgh and Washington). But they are definitely going to be better than this year and aren't in need of a rebuild.

You have to admit that they have addressed the goal tending withe the trade of Vermette.

Is Murray going to move a "High priced" player??? He may be forced to before the start of the 2010 2111 season as the speculation is that the Cap will be lowered below the 50 Million mark by then, so perhaps it's coming sooner or later...........who knows we may see a lot of movement at the draft by GM's getting ready for the coming drop in the Draft, and Murray may be in on it.

I think it's possible he has. Like it or not, Leclaire is still a question mark. He's had one good year, behind a trap team, and was dealing with injuries last year, when he lost his starting job to the guy behind him. I THINK he's a pretty good goalie, but it's far from a guarantee. The story sounds too much like Andrew Raycroft to me.

If he's forced to, because of a drop in the cap, there won't be much demand for these guys at that point. You may not get the return you guys think you will if suddenly there is a $50M cap, for a $7M+ player, when several teams are in a crunch themselves, and the rest of them just can't afford to add that much salary because they are broke (especially if these guys turn out another 75 point season). It would force you into a rebuild, maybe, but you could end up getting screwed because of it. That's all speculation though. Let's see a sharp drop like that first.

You called it...........the Senators locked up 5th place in the Conference.

On the other hand, Burke traded away three valuable draft picks, and Ottawa has landed a Hobey Baker finalist.

Clouston arguably is better than Wilson.
