How on earth can someone dismiss one poll, and then pump the tires of another poll?

there is no depth this dolt wont dive to to prove his idiocy.

That's what I don't get. He posts a poll that says one thing, someone posts a poll that says another and then he goes off on a ramble (that too be honest was TLDR) about said poll.

(frank)er's been dropped on his head at some point.

The Small Market Team philosophy is a fabrication of the incompetent. Several years ago - Interbrew a successful beer company and the worst owner of the Jays franchise (in their brief history) claimed poor attendance was due to the fact that Toronto Blue Jays were a small market team. The truth was, they were cheap, did not spend money on the team (same as Melnyk) and they created a small market team out of a big market team. The current (competent) owners - have changed things around and the team sells quite well for a small market team.

I believe an NHL team in St John's Newfoundland or Saskatoon would sell out if run properly - your argument holds no water.

Then explain why there is not a franchise in either Saskatoon, or St. Johns?

Look most of you guys live in a bubble. It is an echo chamber that produces the same news and reenforces the same messages. So, Sportsnet produces a study that reenforces the message they want promoted.

But there are lots of criteria for evaluating popularity and when you bridge the language differentials and incorporate them into your survey Montreal is far and away the most popular NHL franchise. It is not even close.

Active Twitter followers is a strong proxy in trying to understand interest or popularity.

The Top 10 NHL team accounts:

Montreal Canadiens (@CanadiensMTL)
Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins)
Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks)
New York Rangers (@NYRangers)
Toronto Maple Leafs (@MapleLeafs)
Tampa Bay Lightning (@TBLightning)
Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings)
Columbus Blue Jackets (@BlueJacketsNHL)
Edmonton Oilers (@EdmontonOilers)
Boston Bruins (@NHLBruins)

The popularity of the Leafs is an illusion perpetuated by the Southern Ontario media because it is in the interest of the Southern Ontario media strategy to maintain that myth. Most people don't realize that for many years the Senators were blacked out in the Ottawa market on Saturday night because the Southern Ontario media wanted a national game concept.

For years, as a Leaf fan, I had to endure the backlash of local people against the Leafs. It is hard to explain how much they are despised. Having them as the most hated team in hockey is not bad. People still watch hoping to see them lose.

- spatso

No twitter is not a good judge of popularity. Jesus. Not everyone has twitter.

Nice try kid.

I prefer to think that Chabot and White are more likely contributors.

And how about those Leafs signing a 38 year old to a 3 year deal and Ron Hainsay who will probably play top 4 for the Leafs. Pretty sad.

- spatso

Ron Hainsey is a comparable dman than Phaneuf, signed for way less, and we didn't give up any assets for him.

It's incredible to see how far Phaneuf has fallen, and even more remarkably, how he could be the 2nd best dman on a team in his current state.

you know what a good way to show popularity?

- Revenue?

- Merchandise sales?

- Veiwership?

- Season ticket wait list?

- Attendance?

- Road attendance?

- Home team jack the price on special games (like when the leafs come to town, and sell at deep discounts when the sens are in town)?

- polls (all of them, unless they don't fit your narrative or they add up to 100%)?

You missed a couple ........ having a team in the NHL, in the same marketplace since 1917-18 ...... and for generations, only having a few other teams for fans to choose from.

those are ways of achieving popularity.

the discussion is how do you measure popularity.

the correct answer is twitter followers.

There wasn't an NHL franchise in Ottawa for a long time... though I guess the argument can be made that the market isn't really great for a team.

There are several criteria in granting an NHL franchise. Size of market is certainly among the most important. Quebec would in all probability get the next Canadian franchise granted - but they are also a possibility for a failing franchise, most notably Carolina. St. John's is a terrific town, I've been there many times, great hockey people. I watched an AHL game there when the Leafs franchise was in St. John's. Unlike the Sens in the playoffs, the AHL game was sold out. And the crowd was great. I've heard similar things about Saskatoon.

Now don't you find it rather odd that you and Spatso are the only ones in the Ottawa camp on this blog? Wheras, there are a plethora of Leaf contributors.

Excellent point - I am still curious how Ryan escaped being among the worst 10 contracts in the NHL on that Bleacher Report article I posted earlier. We know that Phaneuf was tops on the list but surely Ryan belongs there. He's not only a lousy player, he's a cancer in the dressing room.

they really need to move the team to quebec. use the newly built arena there, with a better fanbase to boot.

no sense in wasting tax payer $ on a new arena in ottawa.

An NHL team would absolutely not work in Saskatoon.

It's crazy talk. The city only just got a Taco Bell for (frank)s sake.

ryan is the the worst nhl contract for forwards. phaneuf is the worst for defenseman.

you really have to have made a lot of poor decisions to end up with the those 2 contracts on your books.

A new owner, and a great fan base - it would be great. The biggest problem is all Leaf games in Ottawa are a sellout. It adds to their profitability. They finished 20th in team revenue last year despite 3 playoff rounds. Maybe Leaf fans should take Melnyk's threat to not sell tickets to Leaf fans to heart and drive them in bankruptcy.
