Just say it. The Senators, winning or not, are boring af to watch.
- TheTaoOfSemenko

Maybe if they didn't get a two goal lead 3 minutes in it might have had some more pace to it.

They play that system pretty good, first time I've seen them play since the last Sens/Bruins game. Boring or not it has proven to win playoff series with good goaltending.

Still think Washington or Pittsburgh have enough talent to break through it in a seven gamer.

It's been the way to win games for a decade now. Tighten up defensively, allowing next to nothing. Several teams that have won cups have done it that way. But, those teams still score goals, because they have so much bloody talent, they still score, despite being so stingey. It's the way to go about things, in my opinion.

But, let's be honest, Turris, Stone, Brassard, are not going to score like Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang, Kunitz, or Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Saad, or Kopitar, Williams, Gaborik, Richards, Carter, Toffoli, or Bergeron, Krejci, Lucic, Marchand, Horton, Recchi......

The talent is just not there.

Keep it simple. Karlsson was the difference maker in last nigjt's game. Sens can go deep in playoffs as long as Karlsson is the best player on the ice

Of course they do. A big team that loves to hit, grind and battle can also beat it. Any team that relies on speed and transition has a hard time with it though. I've watched a couple Sens games this year and I think in one of them I actually switched over to darts or poker.

Yes, as a Senator fan, that watches all the games, on TV or in person (unless traveling) I agree, the games, for the most part are boring to watch ........... but it does help that they win more than they lose ........... it's NJ Devils Jacques Lemaire boring.

the stats and eye test all point towards goaltending. going from unsustainably good goaltending to average goaltending is enough to kill any borderline playoff team.

Pshh, what do your stats and eyeball test have on spastic's gut feeling?

There are only three teams in the Eastern Conference that have allowed fewer goals, than the Senators.

Preventing goals, and scoring enough to win games, requires just as much talent as the teams that score more goals, than average, while still allowing a few goals.

So in Ottawa's defense, the talent is there, for the regular season ........... let's all see what happens in the playoffs ........ I'll invite leaf fans to watch along, as they will be able to watch the Sens playoff games, as there will probably be no leaf games after the 9th of March.

As Pierre McGUIre reported last week, there are many insiders who are picking Ottawa as the dark horse contender to likely come out of the East. Very often the regular season points leader will not succeed through to the Cup final. Tuuka Rask said last night that Ottawa is the best team he has seen in a long time. As painful as this may be for Leaf fans, the Sens are a serious contender

cup finalists in the last ~10 years almost always had +10 goal differentials in the regular season. Quite often well into the double digits.

I Would think the Sens would need to come in with plus 10 or better on the goal differential if they are going to run hot in the playoffs.

I think you missed the point of my post.

Those teams that have won the cup playing that way, (i.e. tight defensive hockey) have so much talent that they still score goals. They were all phenomenally tight, and gave up very little, but due to the talent on their roster, still scored lots of goals. They relied on the system for defense, and talent for goals.

Pointing out that the Sens are 11th in the league in goals, and 13th in shots (which is in the middle third of the league, not really all that impressive), while being in the bottom third of the league for goals for, is hardly evidence that they've got all sorts of talent anywhere on the roster.

Sens were a top scoring unit last year. Boucher purposely scaled back the offensive attack. He further scaled it back when Anderson had to leave the line up earlier in the year. He asked Karlsson to play a more controlled game.

The critical factor has been the number of wins that Ottawa has been able to eke out while Condin has been playing. After a few hot games at the beginning his save % has dropped into the .890 range. Not nearly good enough to contend.

Anderson on the other hand is right near the top of the league in save %. Let's see what happens over the rest of the season. The players really believe that they have four very strong lines and they can compete with any team in the league.

Alternative facts

condon:

Oct 22- jan 13: 21 games, .922, 2.25

Jan 14 – today: 14 games, .897, 2.94

He saved your season with his play from December to January – wasn’t a ‘few games’. Finally came crashing down from is unsustainable play in mid-jan.

sens are completely reliant on above average goaltending to win.

They were a high scoring unit when they were playing run and gun hockey without a shred of playing defense.

Yes those are the key numbers. Especially the steady decline. Kind of silly to point out that the Sens are benefitting from above average goaltending. Only guys with better save % numbers than Anderson are Holtby and Dubnyk. Good goaltending is also a team number.

Umm, no he wont?

Looks to me like almost the entire team is on pace for about a 5 to 10 point decrease in offensive production. Straight across the board.
