What I can't understand is....... do they think we've forgotten their past comments, over the years, visa vie "re-build"?

Do they collectively have short term memory loss, and believe everyone else does too?

They never criticized whatever interpretation of re-build the leafs were going through over the past decade or longer, or suggested their team try what other teams have been doing all along, and the leafs are now doing.

And in few years, when they do another form of re-build, that will be the one and only true path to success.

Its hilarious to read the spin being put forth, and the spin that will follow this post as well.

here's just one that comes to mind. When Brian Burke traded two first- and one second-round pick for Phil Kessel, he declared he was too impatient for a traditional rebuild and that under his watch the leafs would undergo a radical on-the-fly rebuild.
- D0PPELGANGER

Trading away futures sounds like a rebuild?

Burke didn't tear down what he started with, so how did he rebuild? The very definition of rebuild is that you tear something down and start over. He didn't do that, he took what he already had and added to it.

Why do you leaf fans keep re-defining the meaning of rebuild?

Back before there was a Salary Cap, rebuild meant signing older free agents to "retirement" contracts and you mocked teams that were building through the draft.

Then the JFJ and Fletcher era, making trades was the definition of rebuild, and you mocked teams that were building through the draft.

Then under Burke, trading multiple high draft picks to land Kessel was the new interpolation of rebuild, and you mocked teams that were building through the draft.

And now that the leafs are building through the draft, this is the latest version of how leaf fans see a rebuild ......... the same method used by the Senators, Oilers and other teams that leaf fans mocked for more than the past decade.

So were the teams that were "rebuilding" through the draft right all along, and you leaf fans were wrong for mocking teams that have been doing all along, now that the leafs are doing it?

Lets just split the difference and call it a 50 year rebuild.

So any time a team doesn't win the cup it's a rebuild? So the Canucks are undergoing an eternal rebuild?

In fairness, Burke referred to it as a rebuild. He said it shouldn't take five years to rebuild. It can be done faster.

This is the first time in a decade they've done a full tear down and rebuild. But they themselves thought they were rebuilding.

I think rebuilding refers to a concerted effort to change the core. Since the lockout, I think the Leafs did that once, starting with Fletcher. That rebuild went through Burke, and IMO was pretty decent until he left and Nonis just made a series of terrible moves.

Second one started with Shanahan and his Shanaplan.

- Feeling Glucky?

Yeah I agree. I like Burke and think they should have kept him. Win a cup? Probably not. But they would have been way better with him than Nonis.

Either way, they have one of the best collections of young talent in the league now. The Pens, hawks, kings. All teams that won on the backs of top draft picks (all taken top 3). So I'm happy to give this route a try.

Just clarifying the definition. You're making poop up on your own. In sports a rebuild is tearing a team down and building it from the bottom up. From scratch. And that is done and began through the draft. Something the leafs are doing for the first time. Pretty much ever.

Get off your high horse cock. I didn't mock any teams for doing it. I envied them. Get over your hate. JFJ and Fletcher eras were rebuilds? Holy (frank) you're an idiot.

Between the Kings and Hawks they have what 3 top 10 selections of their own on their rosters?

Guess what? Teams draft every year wether they tank, rebuild, or are a dynasty.

His point I think is that the cores and stars were high picks But both teams began their road to success after drafting the their stud players. And he's right. The teams who traded for their core pieces are far less likely to win in this league than the ones who drafted their elite talent. At least in terms of winning a cup. Hard to name a cup winning team whose best players weren't drafted by the team. And the greatest chance of that happening is being bad enough to get lottery wins or picks.

This isn't about just showing up at the draft. It's about making sure you're getting the best players from thay draft. Or least in the best position to.

The more often you do it the greater the odds of success longer term.

And in four or five seasons, the next form of re-build will be the correct way, eh?

nucks should trade all their recent top 10 picks for veterans; don't need them. also should trade away future 1st's while they're at it.

good way to build a team.

Not making things up, when talking about the Burke re-build. When asked, he declared he was "too impatient for a traditional rebuild and that under his watch the leafs would undergo a radical on-the-fly rebuild."

You have your definition of "re-build" and Burke had his.

And to say that leaf fans, on this site, have not been mocking other teams who have been re-building through the draft (Oilers for example) is one of the most blue goggled, leaf-aid drinking, bud-blinkered statements ever posted on this site.

here is just a few examples of some (leaf fans ) poo pooing the "traditional" re-build, because the leaf had not yet embarked on one.

I think we're starting to see that the tank to rebuild model does not automatically make you a cup contender like a lot of people thought. It is likely the easiest way to get top end young talent but it does not guarantee anything. You still need luck (not every 1st overall pick is a Crosby), and then you need the ability to build around your core to fill in the gaps which is something Edmonton is currently failing at.

Burke (imo) is one of the best GMs in the league. If he has a lot of influence in Calgary I no longer fear for their rebuild.

- daeth

the thank rebuild is great to get 1-2 good draft classes in the cupboard
but then you have to bring in vets, bring in winners

IMO oil bring in lunongo , bring in a guy like morrow, make a trade for a d if its there. Then all of the sudden they are in the thick of things.

but ... nope no goalie. no d, trade vets ... smart move

- nightmare3020

"Tanking" is relying too much on luck. Pittsburgh getting Crosby and Malkin was an incredible amount of luck. Even losing the Ovechkin draft and getting Malkin instead was such a huge break. I hate when people say teams should "Tank" like the Pens. You could try 1000 times and not replicate their success in the draft.

Rnh, Hall, and Yakupov and really nice players. But as 1st overalls? Might not have been the best years to tank.

Why isn't Florida better? Columbus? Atlanta/Winnipeg? People always ignore the teams where tanking has not worked.

Boston did not tank. They built through trades, UFA signings and great second round drafting.

NobodY mocked anything. And that's just 2, not even 3, examples.of people questioning a tank rebuild. Hardly proves anything. I can find random Sens fans doing the same poop. In addition they are right. Tanking is no guarantee. But it is the best way. And the right way. And to be fair leaf nation doesn't have the experience with developing high picks and talents so a couple people may not have known at the time what the right thing to do was. Either way it just proves the point that's being debated. That this team has never tanked or rebuilt. So thanks for proving my point.

Yup and I love it. I think that's why they're sharting the rebuild talk. Wishing their team was drafting top end talent instead of trading youth and picks for 30 yr old b listers like Phaneuf and Brassard while relying on a broken and jabroni goalie tandem.

Well sure, but Toews and Kane were somewhat key players to the Hawks. So was Doughty to the Kings. And Kopitar at 11. Plus the return from Brayden Schenn, taken at 5, also played a key role. Those high picks and the return from them, were the key driving forces in those cups. So was Crosby and Malkin for the Pens.

Those teams are not contenders without what they got from their top picks.

Unless you wanna tell me you don't think Toews, Kane, Doughty, Kopitar, Crosby, and Malkin were all that important to the cup wins those teams had. If that's the case, then you're probably right.

How good would the Canucks be without the Sedins for the last decade?

The thing they have in common is that they all at some point draft high, they all draft well throughout the draft, they trade well, and they augment that with quality FA signings.

You pretty much have to be successful on all routes to win a cup.
