I was hoping we could get more than a second... But I guess Ottawa didn't have much more to trade for.

Leafs got the short term and long term flexibility to build a contender and the Sens got five more years of guaranteed mediocrity

It may look like this for now.

It's a shortsighted trade from Ottawa's perspective because the Sens want to try and make the playoffs at all cost. But Phaneuf is under contract until 2021. It's a terrible deal.

Ottawa saves actual cash (payroll) at the end of the day, and receive a top 3-4 Dman, that they need.

There's only 2.296 Million remaining of Phaneaufs' contract for this season, and each remaining year on his contract declines as it proceeds. 1.5 Million less next year, and a half a million each year following..... 2.296, 7.5, 7.0, 6.5, 6.5

leafs clear room to sign Stamkos this summer, and Tavares a couple years from now, and push the accelerator on the "tanking" to increase lottery odds.

Who would have thunk, that Ontario "Worlds" would collide in this trade???

You may of may not know that both Ryan and Turris played a number of games while injured, and their performance showed it. Turris was injured his leg vs the Islanders (I think) and played 15 more games before sitting out, and Ryan had issues with a broken finger. Michalek & MacArthur are both top six forwards, and also play a lot on the PK, so their absence has been negative to the team.

The Call ups, and the bottom six players who have moved up in the line up have not been up to the task, except for Jean-Gabriel Pageau & Zack Smith who both have excelled in the Face off Circle.

Call it whining, or whatever, it's the reality of the current situation, but when so much veteran leadership (Include Phillips) is missing on a regular basis, it is not a positive for the team, it's a negative, and it's showing.............. just watch for your self tonight when the leafs hammer the Sens with a minimum of 6 goals.

How is it shortsighted ???We needed a veteran Number 2 defender,we didnt want to give up our best youth .And we wanted to dump dead money ,mission accomplished .You seem to forget we arent a cap team ,and if you look at our team payroll you can see we have tons of options moving forward

he has 5 years left after this one...lets assume he is useful as a 3/4 D for 3 of those years... its not horrible, but not ideal..but being in Ottawa's positions as a budget team..they cant sell tanking, they are forced to make a move to try to win.

remains to be seen if Dion can help with that at all...its a decent risk for sure

i can appreciate it's hard to.

i was happy when the leafs first acquired phanuef for scraps. the feeling will wear off eventually and they'll be cursing that contract soon enough.

It is shortsighted in the sense that yes, they save a few bucks over the next two seasons. But they are stuck with an overpaid pylon for the next five years.

Leafs in a better position now more than ever.

They do get a good dman though, provided they don't pair him with Karlsson... he needs to be the puck carrier in his pairing.

But yea, for a team operating on a budget, and supposedly in a rebuild, trading young players for a big veteran contract... not great. I wonder if Dopps still wants to compare him to a Phillips/Robidas type player?

Payroll for this season drops, after the trade, by just over 1 Million, and over 4 Million next season...............money freed up to sign Hoffman?

In actual dollar amounts paid to Phaneuf, this was his second year of being paid 8 Million, with 2 Million already paid as signing bonus(by the leafs) last summer, and the remaining 6 Million over the season......so Ottawa pays less than 3 Million for this season, and his actual paid salary declines to 7.5, 7.0, 6.5, 6.5 & 5.5 for the remaining seasons ............ an average of 6.6 Million.

His presence in the line up, drops the remaining Dmen into positions/roles their better suited for, also Phaneauf is also better suited NOT in the top pairing..........so on paper it looks good, but let's see how it unfolds on the ice.

Cap hit is high, but after this season, the remaining five years average out to 6.6 Million in actual cash paid to him, so it's not as bad when looking at the cap hit.

He will NOT be in the top pairing, so he will be paid more than you'd expect for a second pairing D man, but that's the price paid to unload two bad contracts for next season (Cowen 4.5M & Greening 3.2M) and Michalek's 4.0M for next season will be worth it, IF he gets, ans stays healthy as he plays special teams as well as anyone the leafs may already have.

Been reported all day yesterday he will be paired with Ceci.

Michalek 30 yrs old, Greening 30 yrs old (in less than a month).

Cowen is 25 years old, and may have been traded for his contract, that if bought out, will give the leafs cap relief and room to sign Stamkos .................. OR, he could finally work out his problems with a "fresh start".

Still think he will be better than Cowen was, and moves the rest of the Dmen down in the batting order to where they're better suited.........

Wouldn't Markov be better over all, if he was playing fewer minutes in the second pairing and not vs the opponents top forwards?
