Angel Food Cake Day
10 October
When's the last time you made Angel Food Cake? When's the last time you even had any?
Though it fell out of fashion in the last decades of the 20th century, it's a cake that is almost fat-free. Not even the pans get greased, and though eggs are used, the yolks are left out.
Angel Food Cake has now faded so much from our collective consciousness now that there are many people who don't quite know what makes a cake into an Angel Food Cake.
Today's a good day to at least read about it.
Some like theirs plain; others like theirs frosted, or with fruit on top. Some like theirs a day or two later, when it's starting to get a bit stale, fried up in butter for breakfast even, then with jam and icing sugar, or with syrup, on. |

Thanksgiving (Canada)
13 October
Canada adopted the American tradition of a Thanksgiving celebration.
In the second half of the 1800s, Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated informally in November. Later, it became habit to celebrate it in October. After all, with it being a harvest festival and with Canada's harvests occuring earlier than American ones, it made sense to move the date forward.
By the 1920s, though, it was back to being observed in November.
In 1931, the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa fixed it as the second Monday in October. It was made a formal national holiday, with paid leave from work, in 1957.
Thanksgiving is not really celebrated in the province of Quebec, where people see it as an English-speakers holiday (leaving aside the fact that it's also celebrated in Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Liberia and Switzerland.)
Perhaps in order to downplay American origins, some Canadians from time to time point to Thanksgiving having English origins in the Book of Common Prayer's "Harvest Service" (when they're not also actively denying any English connections to their traditions.) |

Baloney Day
24 October
Woohoo, it's Baloney Day at the trailer park and in the county jail!
In some American towns, the highlight of the year is Baloney Day. A Baloney Day is held the first weekend of every September in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
Bologna Day is even celebrated all over Europe. The first one in Austria, for example, was held on 21 June 2000. The Bologna Day in Europe, however, is a little different -- it's to celebrate the Bologna Declaration (as in the town of Bologna, Italy), which involves standardizing what's required for a university degree in Europe.

Sandwich Day
3 November
Today is the birthday of John Montagu (3 November 1718 – 3 April 1792), the 4th Earl of Sandwich (he became Earl in 1729.)
Popular myth credits him with having invented the sandwich.
Is it true, though? Practically Edible knows -- read our entry on sandwiches to learn all about the Earl and the history of sandwiches.
Reputedly, in America every year, 45 billion sandwiches are eaten each year (as of 2001). Britain remains, though, the best place still to have a sandwich for variety, quality and value.
Have a sandwich today in honour of the day. If you normally have sandwiches every day, then make it one you rarely treat yourself to.
Bread (white)
Mayonnaise
Banana
Butter
Grilled Banana Mayonaise Sandwich
Spread two pieces of white bread with mayonnaise on one side of each slice.
Peel a banana, slice it and lay the slices of banana on one of the mayonnaise-spread sides.
Put the other piece of bread on top, mayonnaise side down.
Melt two or three tablespoons of butter in a frying pan over medium-heat.
Put the sandwich in the frying pan, plain side down, and fry the sandwich until both sides of it are golden-brown, flipping once or twice as needed. |

Mustard Day
4 November
There are so many different kinds of mustard, that it's a rare person indeed who doesn't like at least one of them.
Too often, however, jars of mustard languish in our fridges, pushed further and further back by other bottles, and getting crusty inside around the edges.
Today's a good day to haul at least one of those jars out, (okay, maybe the crusty ones should be hauled out permanently and binned) and spread some mustard on a sandwich, put a dollop on the side of your plate, or stir a teaspoon or so into a sauce.
Pardon me ...

Guy Fawkes Day
5 November
A celebration was proclaimed by Parliament, which continues to take place today on the 5th of November. There are bonfires and fireworks, and an effigy of Guy Fawkes is usually burned in the bonfire. Children used to go around before Guy Fawkes day asking for wood to help build the bonfire with and for small change to help buy fireworks. They would often drag along the effigy they had made. The expression they used was "a penny for the Guy". Some children also blacken their faces on this night at the bonfire celebrations.
The bonfire is also put to a more practical use. Jacket potatoes (baked potatoes) are wrapped in tin foil and cooked in the fire, as well as baked bananas (slit the banana skin, stuff chocolate inside, close the skin back up, wrap in tin foil, and place in fire for about 10 minutes until gooey). Pots of soup can also be heated in the bonfire for the crowd. It's also traditional to serve Parkin Cake at the gathering.
Guy, guy, guy
Poke him in the eye,
Put him on the bonfire,
And there let him die. |
