Which one?

I was just thinking about him since SiriusXM recently added a new David Bowie channel. (And they have made their web app/player free for non-subscribers during the pandemic.)

Oh yeah. That's the one on Showtime concentrating on the first five years of his musical career. It's a counterpart to a documentary that came out right after his death on HBO focusing on his last five years.

There's also a good one, can't remember the name, where many of his collaborators, such as Carlos Alomar and Nile Rodgers, are interviewed.

Anyway, since I'm in the mood, here's another Bowie song:

Another one-artist, two-song post... because this is The Land of Do-As-You-Please.

Two of the most popular hits from Kate Bush's masterpiece album, Hounds of Love (1985). This is one of those rare albums that I can listen to in its entirety and get totally absorbed and entranced by the auditory experience. I love her voice and I love her masterful use of the Fairlight CMI here.

First is probably her best all-time hit. The album version is nice but I think the remix for the 12" extended single version is the best. It could be twice longer than it's 10+ minute runtime and it would still captivate me without distraction.

(Just for KS856, here's a live version performed in 1987 with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour on guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk7AVm0Ome0. He was an important supporter in the beginning of her career as a musical artist.)

I might have embedded the official music video (which uses the album track), but I didn't find it memorable/remarkable enough to use over the extended remix above.

The music video for the second single from the album, however, I believe is one of best ever made, at least in terms of telling a distinct story in conjunction with the lyrics of the song. The video, originally co-conceived with Terry Gilliam as a short film, was so important to Kate that she made a special extended song version just for it (apart from the 12" single extended remix). She also tracked down Donald Sutherland to star in the video with her. She actually showed-up at his home in London unannounced. He was so impressed with her pitch that he decided to do it for free. Anyhow, without divulging any further details, here it is:

For the whole story behind the song and video, which is based on the memoir of the son of the eccentric Austrian-American psychoanalyst and philosopher, Wilhelm Reich, go here:

The Wikipedia page for the song also has a bunch of excellent online references on the composition of the song itself, as well as the production of the video:
