Vancouver needs to make a deal NOW, while Quinn has the most value. Its clear he isn't going to stay. So get what you can, while you can. Otherwise they lose him for nothing in two years.

Nemec plus Mercer plus player plus 1st.

Vancouver needs to admit they are in a hard rebuild and get what they can for Demko and Petterson.

This is the most realistic proposal I have seen. Of course the whole thing depends on whether or not it's a real scenario that Quinn Hughes plans to play in New Jersey. I know what the GM said, but a lot can change, and money can certainly change a player's mind. But let's say it's true that Q. Hughes is planning to leave in 2 years.

If I'm Vancouver, I'm maximizing the asset return. It's not going to be Hischier or Bratt. That's one of the dumbest things I've read on Hockeybuzz. But NJ has mismanaged so many young players in the last few years and can't seem to get a coach who puts any amount of trust in them to the point that their development craters and they get traded.

Can definitely see a world where Nemec + Mercer is dangled. I think rather than another "player" and "a first," it's more likely that Dougie Hamilton is included because he's still valuable, has years left, and can make it hurt less immediately for the Canucks. There isn't any room for Hamilton in NJ if Quinn Hughes is coming over. There's already no room for Nemec on their blueline.

How about we make it interesting:

To NJ: Quinn Hughes, negotiating rights to Boesser.
To VAN: Nemec, Mercer, Hamilton, 3rd round pick

What is stopping Rutherford from sending Q to any other team that offers him something better and give them the shot at pulling off the reunion... Who's to say ALL 3 don't want to go down to FLA for their reunion.

Van gets better returns then whatever lowball NJ offers up or at the very least this scenario leaks to make the NJ offer start to inflate.

It's either that or it's a given that a FA wants to play for the team he rooted for during his childhood, no matter how bad the team is.

Seems like a reasonable possibility. Trade to the highest bidder. That being said, every bidder other than NJ is would presumably be bidding with the idea in mind that they'll only have him for 2 years. So, do you think another team is going to be able to outbid NJ for a 2-year rental only? If a team is desperate and feels he can get them to the Cup, maybe, but also seems unlikely that someone would pay more than the Devils on a short term asset.

Making the playoffs for the first time in while just went straight to your head hey?

That's funny right there.

But can you admit that you are probably going to lose Quinn for nothing when he becomes a UFA and that you should get the absolute most for him. Which would be now.

I'm not saying you have to trade him, or that you should except any deal other than a HUGE one. But if our captain suddenly made noises that he wanted to play with his brother in FLA 2 years from the end of his contract (shuddder), I would be thinking long and hard about a deal, and getting as much as you can if it looks inevitable.

I wasn't implying they trade for him knowing that he is a rental..a team like the Lightning who will have the cap space and Brisebois able to make magic could make this happen. The premise would be come home and I'll go get your brothers.

While this is in the category of possible, I'd say it's much less likely that a team A) trades for Quinn Hughes and then B) trades for Jack Hughes (contracted 5 more years) + Luke Hughes (likely under contract soon for 8 more years). Quinn would have to have uncanny faith in a GM to be able to acquire 2 allstar players after signing a deal. I dunno whether Q. Hughes gets traded at all during his current contract with the Canucks. Definite possibility he goes nowhere. But if they are going to trade him to maximize the return, and it's a foregone conclusion that he wants to play with his siblings, still seems the Devils offering the best return is the most likely scenario. Given their current lack of cap space, it's not possible at the moment. But a lot will depend on whether they can move on from Palat, Haula, potentially Hamilton, etc. If they find takers for all 3 of those players, they clear up close to 20m in monies. Then it becomes a lot more feasible to earmark assets for a Q. Hughes deal. Who knows though, right? All is conjecture. Sometimes trades happen and they are much less epic than people assume, or sometimes of greater magnitude. Based on the reporting of what NJ is rumored to do, I'd say it's 50/50 that they actively pursue Q. Hughes in the immediate window. Odds will change based on July 1 as well. If they sign another player for say 7+ million, then they'll really have no space (short of moving out the aforementioned 3 guys).
