And he nixed the Rantanen deal, so if anything, this is on Marner, not Tre.
Bending over for Marner on his first contract -- and in general, not playing hardball with any of their contracts -- was a fault of Shanny. Even Dubas was ready to dump Marner before he got axed. - gravyface
I wonder if at any point in the last 8 years or so, ANY of 34/88/16 just for one moment, reflected on all the players the Leafs had to say goodbye to, and thought, "Hey, maybe if I took less, we'd be able to keep Zach Hyman!"

They all can conveniently/confidently state, "this is between my agent and the GM/team" and we'll never know the truth of it. I'm sure they wish players stayed (or were happy to see them go), but we'll never hear of that.
But yeah, Hyman and Kadri are two players that could've been difference makers in the playoffs for us.
Happy to see Marner go and if they weaponize the cap space to change the DNA in this team, I'm all for it. |

If JT follows Shanahan back to the Islanders, we should bring back Kadri.
He was the DNA. |

Pass on Kadri.
He's 34 and has 4 years left at $7m and there is no McK here to keep him in line |

I think there is enough precedence in the last few years to make a better case as to suspensions/length, given how lenient they've been recently... but also Leafs, and all bets are off. |

Dubas caved to Matthews and Marner.
It was Nylander he was looking to move apparently.
Either way, dubas made a mess of this team/cap and Tre seems to lose or overpay on his trades.
Good times. |

I think Shanahan was pulling all of the strings when Dubas was here, but Leafs did overpay on Marner's last deal. I don't think Matthews has been overpaid at all.
Tre's trades this year got us Carlo and Laughton, two guys who played well in the playoffs and look to be a part of the team moving forward. He also got us Tanev and re-signed Domi (who also was good in the playoffs). Not every move has been a homerun but I don't think he's lost more than he's won.

Hyman was a decent player here....but he wouldnt have become what he is now as a leafs.
He learned from playoff warriors like McD and Drais on how to become a playoff warrior.
He simply wouldnt have been able to learn or see any of that from Matthews, Marner or Nylander.
Kadri had Mck to keep him in line. |

Im sure he had some say on big ticket items...but Dubas had his own plan and control. Dubas thought he could change how teams win the playoffs. Wasnt happening.
Matthews was definitely overpaid on his first contract and bit on this current one.
He overpaid for Carlo and laughton, Tanev was a great add but again the term is bad, Domi...meh...he had some moments but overall meh. OEL has worked out so far, but we know he can easily fall off of cliff.
We'll see how he handles the knies contract and this off season. Im hoping he doesnt blow the cap this off season but saves it for next off season. I dont expect McD to leave the oilers but there are other better FA's out there. |

Everybody tries to earn max salary possible. Why would hockey players be any different? It’s the GM’s job to manage the cap, not the players’. |

So, more pretty floaters who won’t upset anyone? Get the guys who play the way we want. Let’s not worry that the league might be mean to us. |

Yeah, the problem is, the entire team plays like white knights, turn the other cheek when they're elbowed face first into the glass, when their #1 goalie is elbowed in the back of the head, when their captain is kicked in the head and out for the playoffs, etc. etc., so when one guy pushes back, it stands out like a sore thumb.
When your identity is as a hard-nosed team that plays on the edge and takes a ton of penalties in the regular season, you're rewarded with makeup calls and refs turning a blind eye when you do it in the playoffs.
Team needs a new identity. This soft, skilled Disney on Ice style never wins cups. |

There is no way to measure Dubas' tenure and conclude he was anything but a sh1t GM. |
