Imagine giving the guy who's tracking to be one of the greatest scorers in the history of the league whatever he wanted. What an odd concept.

It's even weirder when you look at how "whatever he wanted" has turned out to easily be fair market value both times.

Matthews is not the one who's spent the last 6 years under the microscope for not living up to his contract just to turn around and set himself up to fleece the team for every cent again.

Yeah, Matthews didn't negotiate at all. He just took the first lowball offer the Leafs threw at him. It was a total random fluke he was made the highest paid player in the league ...

and finished 19th in pts/60 this year...
and is 15th in scoring so far in the playoffs...

and was/is behind Marner in both stats
