Roest, who has served as Syracuse Crunch GM since 2019, the same year Darche joined TBL, is no longer part of organization. Potential option to join #Isles.
Roest was also director of player development. Likely worked closely with Darche, who was the director of hockey ops.
While I don't pretend to have ever heard of him before this, it feels like it would be a huge add to the front office if Darche brought him in

Hagens isn't really billed as a big-time goal scorer though, he's probably a lot closer to a Barzal/Cooley/J. Hughes type than anything else. Not to say that as a knock against him or imply that his skillset won't be incredibly valuable, I just don't think anyone expects him to be a major "cant-miss" goal scorer at the NHL level. - Gabe Athaus
Ah, I misinterpreted "dynamic" and "scoring" as goal scoring rather than overall point producing.

I honestly wish he were still the consensus 1st overall pick because it would be such a perfect fit. I'd love to see Darche swing big and trade up to take him but I suspect that would take Dobson or Romanov + COL's 2026 1st to get it done. Maybe more. That's a big price to pay, but it would be a phenomenal story.

Agreed, it'd be great story to trade back up for him, but yeah, I can't imagine what it'd cost to trade back up that high in the draft.
I'm still not sure it'd be that much of a fence swing to take him first since it doesn't look like he really did anything in particular to hurt his ranking other than...not being the biggest player. But, it's really hard to ignore the growing consensus around Schaefer.

I mean it's not like anyone against taking him thinks he's going to be a bad player, I just think that if he was James Hagens from Edina, MN who grew up a Wild fan...not one single Isles fan would be saying that we should draft him. He's obviously a special talent, but hard to argue with the almost-unanimous opinion that Schaefer is highly-likely to be a star #1 defenseman in the NHL. That's about the hardest thing to find in the league and I'm just not seeing a scenario where the best player for the Isles to draft is him.
To me it's like being offered a no-strings-attached, tax-free $900k or a no-strings-attached, tax-free $1,000,000. It'd be awesome to get $900k, but clearly better to take the $1M.

Nothing is 100%, but Schaefer seems like the best pick. It would be nice for the Islanders to get Hagens as well, but not if takes an overpayment to get Hagens.
Retool or rebuild is imminent as they lack a contending roster. Anyone they add will be a retool. Knowing that they’re re stocking the farm is somewhat of a rebuild. Whatever they wanna call it, just bring us a top end first line and a top pair d. - kindlyrick
You know my position on this but I think there’s a chance they aren’t looking at next season as part of a retool or rebuild. I think it should be but none of us have any idea what Darche’s plan will be. He may look at Sorokin, Barzal, Horvat, and think they only have a couple years of prime left in them. Collin’s recently said the team will be competitive next season and after. Could just be the usual we’ll always compete mantra but maybe not. I hope they look at next season as a throw away and challenge for first overall. Acquire whatever they can on expiring contracts etc. but not sure if that’s the team’s actual plan.

Yeah I have a feeling this new GM will be different. Maybe I have battered wide syndrome with the isles but i just think this guy Darche appears to be a winner.
The more I look back the more I see how poorly the isles have been run manager wise.
Garth was left a mess by milbury but had ample time to turn things around. I’m a little shocked how Lou really put no stamp on this franchise except hire or sign former devils. Darche has his work cut out for him. I think we see a new era of isles..

Im not disagreeing with anything you are saying but that doesn’t mean we are doing a rebuild/retool. He may draft whatever picks we have and call it a day. Sign some FA’s. Make a trade or two and try to compete. Who knows what the owners discussed with him and what the actual plan is. I don’t agree with doing it but I’m not necessarily ruling it out as a possibility.
This article could hold some merit. It could also play into what we are discussing here. - Nfdbulldawg
“keep the cost-controlled Pelech, who still puts up excellent results”. Has this dude watched the team play the last three years.
They discuss having George, Pelech, and Schaefer as our top 3. I mean I’m all for it only because I want a legit shot at first overall next draft minus the whole sabotaging Schaefer’s development thing. Having a 19 year old defenseman playing in a top pairing role in the NHL isn’t usually the best plan. I’ll say I doubt the team does this unless they want to be the Sharks East. This article is stupid and I’m dumber for reading it.

They are probably going to do all of what you mentioned which to me is a retool. Letting this GM put his spin on the roster while drafting and signing free agents. To me, the biggest issue i want to see changed is the inability to sign UFA’s.
I think Darche addresses the media tomorrow at 11am via the team site so that will be interesting to hear him for the first time as isles GM.

For me, I don’t trade Romanov….hes young and plays physical. I am always a fan of a new GM putting his brush to the canvass. If that means getting rid of Pelech, or if Pulock or Mayfield would waive their NTC then see ya. Those are all Snows people who Lou continued to roll out and extend.
They need to bring back DeAngelo, and sign another vet or even two on the backend. They have some dead weight they can use to address scoring. Schaefer might be NHL ready but I wouldn’t throw him in the top pair role.

Yeah hopefully Darche has some kind of positive impact on getting UFA’s to sign here. I would probably call it a retool if we focused on next years draft. If we draft this year and sign UFA’s and make trades that’s just missing the playoffs this past season to me. I’d like to see more of a commitment to sucking another season.
For an isles team about to retool, it makes sense to sign a 25-30 goal scorer for 3.5 million. Does he sign with the isles is the question? If he signs elsewhere it just hammers home that he shoulda been moved at the deadline. - kindlyrick
He will. Wants to stay on Long Island.
Hard for me to believe he wouldn’t sign here.
I don’t think any owner GM would publicly say that a team won’t be competitive. Regardless if a retool.rebuild is imminent.
Hey by the way Islanders fans, we are going to retool a bit so we are going to suck. Just thought I would fill you in before you buy you season tickets or any other ticket plan.
I love what Romanov brings to the team. However, from a trade standpoint I would rather trade Romanov than Dobson. If Dobson can become more consistent and the Isles select Schaefer it becomes interesting.
One question I do not think has been asked but in turn assumed is that Schaefer is NHL ready to step in. I am not sure any of this years picks are NHL ready.

With two #1s in next years draft, and the potential of adding another in the upcoming season. It would truly benefit this team to remain in the bottom of the league for at least one season. You can be in every game and just not win. The influx of multiple first selections next year could vault the team to the next level the following season. Make the sux train take a short trip.
Here is another question to think about. It does not appear that Colorado is going to resign Nelson. Do you bring him back on a short-term deal with the potential of flipping him again at the deadline? Keep in mind that his family and friends are here. Lou is no longer in charge. I know it is extremely rare that this happens.
It would take pressure of prospects being rushed into the mix next year and add to your top six.
