You have both Colorado AND the Islanders going deep in the playoffs this coming season? - JohnScammo
No I should have written that better. I mean the Islanders would be making a mistake trading their own pick because it is likely to be early in the 1st round again as they will not be very good. COL's is likely to be in the mid-to-late 20's next year.
I suppose the Isles could offer their own pick but they'd have to put some heavy conditions on that, I wouldn't want to be trading that pick if it were inside like the top-15 of next year's draft. But then the risk becomes if the pick were to slide to the 2027 draft and have no conditions...they better be pretty god damned competitive by then or they risk a disaster |

Okay, now I think I understand what you're saying. Trading the COL pick would be underwhelming and probably wouldn't be acceptable. And trading the Islanders' pick would be overpaying unless conditions were attached.
Is the 2027 draft a deep one? |

Just wait to steal away Hagens as a UFA. If he really loves the Islanders, he will sign.

Ray Bennett ran Colorado’s power play, Bob Boughner ran the PK in Detroit.
Big job to fix up both special teams units with the Islanders.
The Islanders finished with the 2nd worst PK% in the league last year. Would anyone like to venture a guess as to who had the league-worst PK%? |

Pretty much, yeah
Not playing that game with the 2027 draft
but Landon DuPont will be the first overall pick in it |

Bob will fit in. As long as Patrick is good with the coaches. Let him pick the coaches and get him a better roster so we can really find out about Patrick.

Which makes Boughner a curious selection... |

Did Roy select his own assistants? Or at least have input?

Good question John. I think the coaches should pick and GM should stay out unless the coach wants input from the GM. I think the roster has been the biggest issue and especially with the PP. I doubt coaches are telling the Islander forwards to pass the entire PP and do not screen the goalie and look for deflections. |

Looking back:
He was HC of Florida for two seasons, in which they finished with the 16th and 10th ranked PK
He took over as HC of SJ when Deboer was fired in Dec 2019 and SJ finished that season with the leagues #1 ranked PK. They had the 14th ranked PK the following season, and the 2nd ranked PK the season after that. He was fired that summer. |

Bennet ran the PP in Colorado, so he has a tough job as well joining the Islanders.

Yeah time will tell…clearly they are addressing the special teams with these hires so that’s a positive. Both hires have had success as PP and PK coaches so let’s hope that carries over.

Elliotte Friedman: Jason Robertson's name is out there; could be moved to make room for a Granlund extension if Dumba or Lyubushkin can't be shipped out - SN 590
Could maybe buy a draft pick by taking Dumba's deal and immediately buying him out
Or swing for the fences and see if they do Dobson for Robertson since the right side of their D stinks. That one's a little murkier in terms of if it's the right move or not |

Islanders would have to think about it. Wonder if trying to bring in Howard would be the better move at this time?

All hypothetical and off the top of my head, thinking as I write:
I think there could potentially be a path to doing close to a 1-for-1 swap with DAL for Robertson using Dobson. Robertson is the better player but Dobson is a RHD with huge potential and that's a real rare find in the NHL. Robertson's extension will likely be more pricey than Dobson's though. Maybe they can do something like Dobson for Robertson/Dumba, and immediately buyout Dumba.
That still leaves the COL 1st round pick available to move for Howard, which would quickly revamp the forward group to look something like:
Robertson-Horvat-Barzal
Lee-Pageau-Palmieri
Howard-Ritchie-Holmstrom
Tsyplakov-Cizikas-Gatcomb
MacLean
Engvall
Duclair
Although, that creates a massive log-jam at LW at both at the team level and organizational level. Eiserman is also a LW. Having Robertson/Howard/Eiserman down the left side might be a "good" problem to have. It probably means they'd have to move someone like Tsyplakov or Lee, or buyout Engvall which Darche already said isn't happening. Trading Engvall is probably near-impossible unless they eat a ton of money or include significant assets to facilitate the deal.
Maybe they go for Robertson and don't bother with Howard. Who knows. Draft will be fun though. |

Should be no trouble scoring with Robertson and Howard. Defense would be a challenge.

Forgot about Duclair, yea it probably doesn't work without clearing out a body or two. |

I agree. Lot of work to fit everything in. Dobson is the wildcard. If he ever improves his defense, you would really want to keep him. |

I do want to keep him, but Robertson is the same age and is a premier forward in this league. I'm confident that keeps up and I'm unsure about what direction Dobson's development is going and what his ultimate ceiling will be. |
