That was a fantastic effort game, finally putting up 40+ shots against a top team and playing like you have to play, even when you're not getting the big saves. Core players stepped up (except Rielly, he stunk) without Tavares, even scored on the PP (PK was terrible though). Need this type of effort more often than not.

Leafs still need upgrades on D and probably at least 1 bottom-six shutdown C.

Seth Jones with $$$ retained (5 AAV or less cap hit) should be a target.

Mario Ferraro.

Scott Mayfield.

David Savard.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

Scott Laughton.

Boone Jenner.

These are guys that would help the Leafs. If the Leafs are going to do the deadline deal dive, stop getting expiring contracts and start pulling in guys with term (or a hope in hell to re-sign) that at least stay a few years instead of blowing the picks, prospects and watching these guys walk as UFAs after 1 round.

Unless the offer is too good to be true, I doubt Savard will get traded if Montreal remains in the playoffs picture.

And if they keep playing the way they have the past 20 games, they will be.

I think the Atlantic is starting to settle in. Toronto, Florida, and Tampa are going to be your top three. In what order remains to be seen, but I think it's a safe bet barring a total collapse.

Boston is sinking into the basement. Someone unexpected is going to sneak into the playoffs this year. Columbus? Ottawa (god forbid)?

Now it's time to make a move and shore up the center depth. I wonder how long before Tre pulls the trigger on something?

God I love Jake McCabe’s game.

He and Tanev are such a great pairing.

- Cush29

this!

might be the best D pairing they have had in....many years

Mccabe is still only 2 mil on the leafs Cap.

Or both Tanev / Mccabe are 1 mil less total than Rielly

Gotta' live in the now and enjoy it! Wait you don't think he's worth 4.5M?

He's the 88th highest paid D man in the league.

Next year at 4.5 he's locked up for 5 years. Which would put him around the 75th highest paid D man right now.

https://www.spotrac.com/n...n/d/sort/contract_average

Getting him for 4.5 x 5 from ages 31 to 36 seems like a pretty good move by the Leafs to me?

If you want to be angry about a D man not playing to his contract value look no further than #44.

I believe in Mo.

Not sure what it is this year but I think he gets better.

He has knack for scoring those greasy goals from the point by getting pucks through in playoffs. Which is exactly what Berube wants.

So we will see, i have been disappointed though.

He's been good in the playoffs last few years but looks terrible this year and at 7M & the being the highest paid D man they have it's just not value for money IMO.

he has done the reverse marner.

If he can have a good playoffs I don't care, he can play bad if he wants to.

I am going to reserve my judgment for then, but if he has a bad playoffs then yeah get the pitchforks out.

Kraken and Isles are both out of it now, shoutout to NSH even though ROR is unlikely.

1 game between next monday and next saturdays games, similar light schedule the following week. My guess is after that Habs game it could be any day.

God forbid Leafs expect a player to play to their contract value both in the regular season AND playoffs. I think most other teams fan bases have that expectation and so should we.

It's ok to be good in one and great in the other (regular season / playoffs) but it's not ok to not be at least value for money in both, at least for me.

Meh bad years happen, bad half seasons, bad weeks. I think fans need to calm down and not expect everything to be perfect. Injuries, illnesses and life poop happen.

I give players time, I think they deserve it.

Hearing from multiple sources that the Padres are out in Roki Sasaki.

They will begin their international signings of Jhoan De La Cruz and Carlos Alvarez in the next few hours.

so Jays and Dodgers ...or something

Shi Davidi
@ShiDavidi

Hearing the Blue Jays are working to acquire additional international bonus pool room as they await Roki Sasaki’s decision. Doesn’t mean a decision has been made. To be expected from all finalists for the right-hander, so they’re ready for all possibilities.

adding

Ben Nicholson-Smith
@bnicholsonsmith

Sources tell me and
@ShiDavidi
the Blue Jays are getting $2 million in international cap space in their trade with CLE.

Again, this does not mean Roki Sasaki has made a decision, but Jays clearly prepping in case he chooses them.

Jays now have 8.261 million and the dodgers have 5.146 million apparently
