long post on Benoit.

Who sucks as an actual top 6 D, but seems like a gud dude. who hits and makes you feel good...but man he is awful

‪Steve Burtch‬ ‪@stephenburtch.bsky.social‬
So here are my comments on last night:

1) Jake McCabe in and Simon Benoit out has a LOT more to do with the Leafs improved possession and xG results at 5v5 than people seem to recognize.

Pulling Benoit was arguably the biggest addition by subtraction move they could make.

McCabe is their top D.

On this topic, I would have assumed after last night that Benoit's REL TM numbers look even worse than they did prior.

Playing without him helps everyone else's numbers.

Lo and behold his updated RAPM chart from Evolving-Hockey.

2 standard deviations worse than average puts you in the bottom 2% of skaters.

That is where he sits in both xGF and xGA per 60 impacts.

The bottom 2% is essentially below replacement level.

Emergency call up in a pinch territory.

Not a guy you trot out to play 18 mins a night like clockwork.

Connor Timmins 5v5 xG%:

w/ Benoit 41.05%

w/o Benoit 60.40%

In case anyone is wondering.

Jays acquiring more international cash

Blue Jays acquire OF Straw, international signing bonus pool money from Guardians

https://www.tsn.ca/mlb/to...-from-guardians-1.2237697

Jays now have 8.261 million and the dodgers have 5.146 million apparently

Still best theory I’ve heard is that $ won’t be a huge factor. Bonus pool $ is pretty insignificant for any of the teams and they have to give him a minor league salary.
Endorsements, especially in Japan, will be big. Does he do better as # 3 guy with Dodgers or #1 guy in Canada?

He's been good in the playoffs last few years but looks terrible this year and at 7M & the being the highest paid D man they have it's just not value for money IMO.
- Cush29

I feel like Mo has had one great series (against tampa, the year we beat them) and the rest were meh to ok. But the one series gave him a lot of leaway for me...which is coming to an end.
I feel like his contract is not going to age well and for someone who's only 30 and considered our "number 1 D" he can leave a lot to be desired. I like Mo and he can get quite a bit of points in the reg season (but currently on pace for only 35pts), he just lacks some qualities you'd like in a number 1 D - big shot, great defensively etc.
Yes I know, a lot of Dmen dont have that but still.
IMO.

It's pretty simple. He has sucked this year and it isn't him sacrificing offense for defense. He's been mid to bad for 2 years outside of that quick playoff burst. When he's scoring it's fine, when he isn't...what do you even do here?

it will be the Dodgers
- senstroll

Of course.

But what are they going to do...a 6 man rotation?
They already have Snell, Yamamoto, glasgow, gonsolin, May/Knack

If the Dodgers get all these Japanese stars, they may as well just hand the Cup to the Leafs!

Adding Straw puts them in a tough spot in terms of the tax. If they get Sasaki, they probably go on a spending spree anyway. If they don’t, they probably just add a mid level bat.

Right. You're already over so if you can get Sasaki then might as well go all out.

Meh bad years happen, bad half seasons, bad weeks. I think fans need to calm down and not expect everything to be perfect. Injuries, illnesses and life poop happen.

I give players time, I think they deserve it.

Most employers are ok with a bad day or week but if you aren't performing at the level expected of you / you are compensated to perform at your shown the door.

The life of a pro athlete is one that shouldn't be THAT far from the reality of every one else. The NFL has it right, don't perform? Boom see ya.

The NFL is also broken and they literally break contracts with MVP players because of the position they play relative to salary. I think they can find a happy medium.
