Outside of the fact that it takes some luck to win any Stanley Cup, there was nothing particularly lucky about the Hawks. They drafted and developed the majority of the team and signed some key players to fill in the gaps. Unless you are implying that hitting on picks after the first round is pure luck?

We agree to disagree, i believe they drafted poorly, they did hit on a bunch of late rounders, 2 top 6 forwards through all those years and they were drafted 1 and 3 over all.

With dollar bill moving on Rocky allowed the FA signings of Campbell and Hossa.

They say timing is everything and it sure was in this case.

I do find it interesting when i look at previous drafts for the Blackhawks and other teams, it sure seems like teams with extra draft picks more times than not draft a good player out of the cluster of picks.

I remember the board (BOD) blowing up at the time for giving up draft picks for him. Think it was a 2nd and a 3rd in the next draft.

While Stan couldn’t draft a Dman until Vlasic and possibly some of these other guys (Kaiser, EDM, Allan), he managed to find a pretty good one in trade.

Only because some of their 1st round picks were misses? They drafted and developed 10 of the guys who played for them in the playoffs in 2010.

I would change “some" to “most”. Between 2000 and 2009, they had 11 first round picks and only 4 were hits (Ruutu, Seabrook, Toews, Kane) with the other 7 I think you’d have to classify as busts especially given how high they were picked (Yakubov, Vorobiev, Babchuk, Barker, Skille, Beach, Olsen).

I suppose you could somewhat excuse Babchuk and Olsen as they were picked after 20.
