I find it interesting they jumped in front of SJ, Phi, and Calgary who had multiple picks in the 1st round to draft that kid. Wonder if KFCs spidey senses were going off
- BetweenTheDots

Have to find somebody willing to deal. The cost of the deal was quite high as it was.

Parker Holmes - LW 6'4 223 lbs and playing for Brantford. That's a big boy.

Julius Sumpf - C 6'2 190 lbs and played with Desnoyers. Needs to work on his 200 ft game but must be a reason Kyle reached on this pick

Julius Sumpf is not anywhere high on my list because he was in the old draft section set up the old way before the erased it. He can really release the puck, and is got some size, has some edge. He isn’t a high end stick handler and 3rd year eligible.
He a C-W, and he has lots of in-motion skill.

Parker Holmes in a kid you take who is 6’ 4” and has skills. He plays for Brantford,so the Hawks have seen enough of him while there watching Vanacker and Lardis to warrant a raffle ticket. He is a decent fist fighter out there.

Based on this year's draft, other than Frondell just happening to be big and skilled and having the best shot in this draft, the Blackhawks feel they have a lot of skating skilled on the smaller side playmakers and now are going skating skilled big men?

The league in general is attempting to develop bigger guys who can play...

Side note:
I guess the idea Kyle had about drafting a goaltender went away when the got one they think will be around for awhile now.

Holmes can drop'em:

Rumor just announced during the draft - Vegas and Toronto close on a sign and trade deal for Marner's rights and involves other NHLers.
Per Friedman, Nic Roy would be going to Toronto.

I thought Marner only wanted a 3 or 4 year contract?

Don't worry - if it doesn't work out, Vegas will have no second thoughts to trade him elsewhere.

Since Paul mentioned it I've read several rumors about wanting even a 2 year deal and can't help thinking that would be perfect for the Blackhawks

Just started looking at the 2nd day of the draft and noticed Sumpf right away. Any of you guys who watched the last WJC probably remember him too....... Simply said the kid made plays all game long in every zone. He really impacted every game I saw of him for a German squad (I'd guess Germany has taken the biggest jump of all nations the last 5-10 yrs) that was pretty good but usually up against it.

Kids name is called by the PBP guy all game long. Smart kid with skills to do something about . ....it.... Love the pick and can't really name his traits from memory only that this kid makes plays in best on best in open competition.. Great value in rd 4.

Finally!

A Russian Goalie

Ilya Kanarsky. 6' 3". 192

Traded the last slot...to Panthers for a 7th next yr.

Funny the kid picked with that traded slot, Dumpfy, is one of the kids who got pounded by one of those Hawk rough guys, i cannot remember which, Holmes or Cumby...

What's not to like with this kid's numbers going way back and nice size at 6ft 3in? (Think the majority of KD's goalies in the system are 6ft 3in) ..... Notice he got 3 games in the VHL this yr and threw up a .942 SPG!! https://www.eliteprospect...ayer/700649/ilya-kanarsky

Oh wow, looked like Marner was gonna walk for nothing. Nice work if they get a useful piece or two back for a guy who's as good as gone.

Yo LA, you still around? .. Jordan Spence to the Sens. I like this kid. I could see Kaiser ending up a lot like Spence.

A few months ago I saw Cumby KO some guy in a YouTube video. So I watched a couple Seattle games, he’s a beast when he’s throwing bombs but he can’t play hockey to save his life. I guess you sign him to play in Rockford and hope someone can teach him how to play.

His fighting style reminds me of Link Gaetz the way he just attacks and overwhelms his opponent by throwing punch after punch. I watched Brantford dozens of times in the last year and I couldn’t tell you anything about Holmes?

Cumby has been with Seattle WHL for two years, and I have seen lots of Seattle games, but honestly couldn't remember who he was.

You're a beauty, Dots. A few days back I told you I like, even love, Frondell but don't think he is a top 5 pick due to a lower ceiling. I buy that but it in no way means this great sized nose over the puck kid won't end up in the top 6, for sure top 9, on a cup winner. .... Love these semi skilled, 3rd line mentality, with great size types.

But top 3 picks should only come around once in a blue moon and you ideally wanna come out with a Toews, Doughty or Demidov type.

Anyway, that'll be the narrative, did KD specifically draft size this yr. Fair question but if it's a simple yes or no question I say no. Yes, these kids can play and happen to be big........... But, that doesn't mean they didn't have it down to 2 similar players and went with the bigger one because of his size. Might have, and to me that's good GMing. If there was any compromise to get size it wasn't skating. West and Nestrasil can skate.

Somehow this draft seems anticlimactic but like all KD's drafts I like this one at first glance. Big, skilled players who he might not have enough of who can skate. ...

Thanks, Wiz. I didn't realize Sumpf was 20 yrs old. No wonder the kid looked so good at the last WJC. Kid impacted so many shifts in a high pressure best on best game after game...... And looking closer he played with Desnoyers at Moncton. Very pedestrian numbers for a 20 yr old, especially for the Q.

He'll be in RKF this yr.

Totem, you're more valuable than you think. Indeed, you see loads of these games live and there is no replacing that. Thanks for sharing and you and Wiz are working nicely together. ... Very helpful, dude. ....... Paul too. He's at a bunch of OHL Oshawa games and if you read his posts he's like you seeing and posting about guys under the radar as well as all the big shots that come through.

Very helpful!
