Only a fool would guarantee the years what with the Colliton and Richardson experiences... want guaranteed years -then perform. Guaranteed = insurance for the potential to suck.

What's the HC of the Golden Gophers like?

Wouldn't mind Tocchet- but I doubt he is looking for a building project.

- SC116

It will be guaranteed years, that's just how it works and only a fool would take a non guaranteed contract in this business.

If they want to hire an established head coach, they have to guarantee the years. If they are hiring another first timer, maybe not.

That would be great, but I think it will be a really tough sell to keep him out of Boston. He's from there and I think McAvoy or one of the D-men is his son-in-law or something.

So you’re suggesting that the In Law angle is a pro afa BOS being attractive to him?

Hmmm…that’s a new one.

So, you think he'd prefer to go from one declining franchise to another instead of joining an original 6 that's on a serious ascent?

If we're talking about established head coaches, the Hawks probably are not getting the pick of the litter. Coaches usually want to win, too, and we are still a few years away from doing that. That will narrow the available pool considerably. It's part of why they took the chance with LR, because at that moment, this team was at its nadir and not many established head coaches want that kind of job.

We're looking for the guy who is committed to seeing this process through, and will build this team up. Not necessarily a turnaround specialist like Berube or Torts who both have shorter shelf lives. Cooper is the prevailing benchmark in this regard, why I keep mentioning him, whether or not he's even possible. And Q certainly fits that mold, and we know he ain't coming back here.

If a contract is signed for x number of years, isn't the contract guarantee the compensation for the duration of the contract, whether the coach is fired or not in essence a guarantee?

He’s my top choice for the Head Coach vacancy. The Hawks will have to sell him on winning in the future.

Yeah, I think "guaranteed years" is a bit of a misnomer. I was originally talking about basically an agreement that he wouldn't be let go before the contract was up (not necessarily as part of the contract). Carle has mentioned several times that he didn't like how NHL coaches are hired and fired - often on a whim.

Lots of chatter out there that Sullivan will be probably going to either Boston or NYR. That's just what I've seen posted by some of the hockey folks FWIW.

I'm sure it's possible he ends up the Blackhawks coach. Like a lot of the available coaches, his performance has kind of been a mixed bag with the decline of the Pens. I think that's mostly been their roster and the need to rebuild and stubbornness to refuse to pull the plug and rebuild their team.

I'm not saying it's a big thing, but with so many family/nepotism stories in sports, I don't think you can completely discount it. How often do people talk about the Hughes brothers wanting to play together, or any other sets of brothers (Staals, Sedins)?

People take jobs for various reasons. Location and family are often high on those lists.

Not that it matters to the Hawks, but:

James Murphy of RG.org: A source said that the Anaheim Ducks have offered Joel Quenneville their head coaching position. The source added it’s “his if he wants it, and I’d be stunned if he doesn’t take it.”

There are other teams that are still interested and pushing, but as of Saturday afternoon, Quenneville was the frontrunner according to the source.

The New York Rangers, Seattle Kraken, Boston Bruins, and Philadelphia Flyers have all reportedly shown interest.

If the Kings lose the series against the Oilers, there will be one more coaching vacancy (and maybe a GM spot) available.

What do you think the chances are of TB letting Cooper go if they are out in Rd1? So many moving parts to all of this.

About as much chance as Lovie Smith winning his last game giving the Bears the first pick. Slim to none but anything is possible. On top of that, Cooper would instantly have a chance to become the highest paid coach in multiple locations.

If both Cooper and Sullivan were to be available, the Hawks would have a better chance to get Sullivan. I’m thinking that Cooper would go to a team with a more veteran presence, like the Rangers.

The Rangers need to fix that room, and make some hockey trades. Not sure any coach alone can fix their situation. I wonder if they rehire Torts.

The Rangers are a mess, however if they can move a couple of guys and bring in new talent, they should be okay short term, however not cup contenders.

Then he can coach Malkin. It has long been known he is going to be a Blackhawk. (Red Font)

Agree the Rangers are a mess. I'd rather go Boston than New York if I'm a coach.

What these charts tell me is speed alone does not make you a great (or even a good) hockey player.
