So Kaiden Guhle just got a 5.55 mill per x 6 season contract from the Habs. Has two partial NHL seasons under his belt....44 games two seasons ago with 18 points and 70 games last season with 22 points....and now going to get 5.5 mill per season.
What does Marcus Pettersen get on his next contract? Probably wont be with the Pens.... |

There will be sticker shock for Pettersson. I think a lot of people think a small raise will get it done, but he's an established #2 now.
Every indication is Pens plan to sign him after Crosby so I don't think it's a foregone conclusion he's leaving. But he'd be a real valuable trade chip at the deadline if they don't. Might pull in a first if they don't plan to keep him. |

I wonder how much of that decision depends on how Pickering has progressed. If they see him potentially making the roster next year, I could see them sending Petts at the deadline -- which may not be a bad idea if they are truly committed to a rebuild, which by recent moves seems like it. |

Probably not but let's see how he does in the AHL this year.

I think at 28 years old, and playing the best hockey of his career, he's going to want term and a fair size raise. Both of which he deserves. I could see Dubas giving him a nice raise but not term. He didn't really want to give Jake term and has publicly said things along the lines of not wanting to give older players term. So, I doubt he will give Marcus term and therefore think Marcus will be traded this season. |

Madden said "he's been told" that Geno will play one more year in the NHL then forgo the last year of his deal and go play in Russia. |

I suggested this earlier. Judging by the direction of things, a trade is the right move. If I had no intention to give him a new contract, I'd put him on the market now. Might get a good NHL ready prospect plus a high pick.

I have no wish to watch Sid, Letang and Malkin sail off together during a rebuild. Sid should go UFA, Tanger ask for a trade and Malkin go play in Russia if that’s the case. Rather watch these guys go compete 100 percent. |

I don't think Pickering is going to step in as a top pair in a year if at all. I probably would say him and Graves at 2-3 is best case and Gryz will probably be gone. If Petts is gone they probably sign someone else who isn't as good to fill the gap. Pros and cons for each |

I've been saying since the details of his contract came up this off-season that it wouldn't surprise me if Malkin walked away from the last year, as he'd only lose 1 million if he got the signing bonus. Not sure I believe Madden on this one though, it's just connecting the dots to a possibility. |

But not cap space, pretty sure they pay Malkin's full cap hit in that scenario. |

No faults in your logic at all. It's something I think they should and probably have considered. Only saying I don't think it's a foregone conclusion. And that there are indications they plan to sign him. I think they do value having certain veterans around their young players, and Petts would be a great guy to mentor younger players. Plus, they should have at least one legit top four LHD. |

Indeed, which is why it's unlikely to happen if Sid resigns. |

FWIW, he said he got the info from sources. He doubled and tripled down on it his entire show. Wants to play for his hometown team. Who knows.... I could see it. I think he made a reference to family reasons playing a part. I assumed he was talking about his parents. |

That's likely the scenario. I'm just talking about maximizing the return. As we know, that won't happen around the deadline.

Geno said publicly few days ago he wants to play a couple seasons in Russia before retiring. Whether he leaves a year early or finishes his contract, IDK. Either option makes sense. |
