Fringe NHL defenseman/third pairing guys will be traded or lost to waivers.
Habs traded Kovacevic for a 4th rounder because he'd most likely have been lost to waivers after training camp.
Leafs will need to decide who they keep and get some picks.

I'd be curious to see what team female dog Robertson thinks he can waltz into a top-6 role out of the gate.

He has a shot for these two.
I'm not saying it's a sure thing but he at least has a chance.
He has none in most hockey teams.

Just such a stupid move on his part. Was it some left-field tactic by his agent? Dumb dad/brother envy?
He played well last year in stints, but Keefe played veterans over him, which has been done since the Dawn of Mankind.
This year, the forward group is weaker with the absence of Bertuzzi, and he has a brand-new coach, and this is what he decides to do, with zero leverage as an RFA that doesn't have a lot of trade value? |

Mermis and Webber go to the Marlies. If Hakanpaa is healthy then they are likely trading Liljegren or Timmins depending on the cap needs and their assessment of the player's value vs. trade value. If Hakanpaa goes to the LTIR, they probably keep both guys.

I like Timmins, never could become a steady regular but he's shown flashes of very interesting skills.
I feel like Lilybust is at the end of his rope in Toronto.

Yeah I'm confused at the timing because he would appear to have a pretty good opportunity with the Toronto Maple Leafs this year.

His former GM could like him - they could use another guy to compete for top-6 minutes. Although the only trade I'd do with Pittsburgh is for Graves with notable retention (like $2m) and I doubt they feel Nikky is worth that.
I know Graves had a very bad year last year, but I think he could be a successful reclamation project - especially with a coach like Berube providing guidance.

Methnks Liljegren - as much as I've been an optimist for him - is traded at the TDL for an upgrade. |

Not being a healthy scratch in the playoffs and somehow getting a raise?
I don't mind him, but I think the problem is that he doesn't do anything well enough to warrant a spot other than being born right handed. OEL has taken his second PP spot and he's not strong enough defensively to edge out most of the others. He's just kinda...whatever. Outside of that stint where Rielly was down and he was the 1st PP QB, he had a very "meh" season. |

It all depends on how healthy everyone is. Carrying 8D is pretty standard nowadays and we certainly had a bunch of injuries last year. |

The Penguins thread here on HB would jizz their pants if Dubas got out from the Graves deal. Apparently he's persona non grata there |

I'm with Adam on this one.
If Liljegren doesn't bring significant offense, doesn't defend that well and isn't really physical... what does he bring to the table to justify he's in over someone else?
I liked Benoit over him last season, and god knows that wasn't expected. |

Well the coach who scratched him is not here anymore.
But for a 3 mil rhd, im not sure what more you can expect. hes been what id expect.
bottom pair, but can fit in 3/4 when needed. decent puck mover. I think his D is a but underrated

I think a lot of Leaf fans felt that last year was his audition year and he didn't really impress. He keeps getting benched in the playoffs. He's 25 years old. There's a fair bit of WYSIWYG there. He could still toughen up a little, learn to move the puck better - as I noted earlier it was small things that gave Vince Dunn more confidence with the puck and changed his career at age 26, but he started to really show it at age 25. Liljegren already has skating and puck skills, he just needs to use them under pressure and react faster (that may be more than a "just" type of thing).
Timmins is a nice skater with great offensive instincts and decent defensive positioning. He's really good at taking the line on zone entries and more or less fast enough to compensate for some mistakes. He's not very physical and doesn't engage on the boards that well and isn't great at protecting the front of the net - those things he has in common with Liljegren, really. Timmins is also 25.
Both players had setbacks due to injuries/illnesses earlier in their careers (Timmins moreso). For me, I like Timmins more - but I think the NHL in general would give up more value for Liljegren and we would see $3m in cap space opened up. |
