Leafs blueline needs a total overhaul.
Giordano, retire. Brodie, also, retire.
Edmundson, also over the hill. He was barely used when St. Louis won the Cup years ago. If he feels like playing for 1 million as a bottom pairing D, okay, otherwise, let him walk. He's a LHD and the Leafs need RHD.
Lyubushkin is a RHD but don't see him as an effective top-4 D. Bottom pair RHD, he'd be okay if he's the right price which would have to be less than 3 AAV.
Liljegren, I think his time is up here. He just hasn't shown he can play any aspect of the game effectively. I'd be looking to move him and bring in somebody more proven and more experienced because Liljegren's ceiling is very low even at his best. I'd look to San Jose to try and pick up a veteran with playoff experience like Rutta. Not a special or flashy player but brings steady experience with limited minutes and role.
Benoit got an extension. In my book, that means you trade McCabe at his peak value and use Benoit as the "physical PKer" role in his place. McCabe has always been injury prone, undersized and overrated. I think he had an okay year but you can move him now and not worry about having to overpay him on his next contract. I've seen some people suggest keeping him at 5 AAV. That's insanity. He's not worth a penny more than he makes now.
Rielly isn't going anywhere and he's decent at what he does. He can't be relied upon to shutdown top players but he can skate and pass the puck effectively. He needs a defensive partner who can let him play his game offensively.
That should be Pesce as target #1. His offensive game is non-existent which is why Pesce shouldn't get more than between 5-6. That in of itself is an overpayment but he's a UFA and his net pay in TO is lower than most other places.
Leafs should also strongly consider trying to bring in OEL to jumpstart their PP. He has a lot of PP goals and has proven he can bring offensive power to a PP that needs a shot from the blueline.
DeMelo should also be considered as a top-4 RHD shutdown D.
As should Smith as a bottom pairing utility "home town" guy.
Rielly | Pesce
OEL | DeMelo
Benoit | Lyubushkin (or Rutta if you can trade Liljegren to SJS)
Smith
That's a blueline that can score more on the PP, stronger on the PK and more reliable at shutting down other teams without having to go into a total bunker shell that costs the Leafs the ability to break out and attack. |

Not a fan of that D core
McCabe should not be traded, regardless of his current value. He was our best Dman making 2m/year
Edmundson was great in the playoffs and can play both sides. Will depend on how much he wants
Agree it’s time to ship off Lilly. Should get a decent return
Gio i would take as pressbox #7 at league minimum if he wanted, but he will probably retire
As you stated… Pesce will be overpaid |

To Vancouver - Laine and prospect
To Columbus - Garland and Mikheyev
I love this idea. Garland has been linked here for a while. Mikheyev would even out the cap. |

Should be traded. As a pending UFA, you sell high on him. He doesn't do anything that Benoit can't do. He really is overrated and will eventually be overpaid.
Edmundson was great in the playoffs and can play both sides. Will depend on how much he wants
No he wasn't. He barely played meaningful minutes and his PK skills were not effective enough. Not a fan of having LHD play on the right side. It never works out well for this team. He's big but doesn't play like it. Don't see the point in keeping Edmundson for offensive reasons either.

Hronek just got 7.25. Don't think Pesce can ask for more than 5.5 with his offensive game being so limited. Same goes for DeMelo. Might be able to get both of them for less than 11-12 AAV combined. If you move McCabe, that extra 2 AAV goes towards getting a guy who plays RHD. |

Vancouver Island is so overrun with deer, that the government has let US tourist hunting companies shoot them from helicopters with machine guns. Everything is under control |

No problem, just 12 million dollars later.
Or, as it's known in Toronto, one Leafs All-star player later. |

If you guys could pick 2 players in UFA the Leafs could grab at reasonable but not lowball terms, who would that be. Let's be generous and say as of now, all the pending UFAs even though many of them will likely resign. So your fantasy best two UFA signings for the Toronto Maple Leafs. |

OEL is better than Montour for what the Leafs currently need.
Montour will cost way more and his new contract will have Bryan McCabe written all over it.
