I know eh? As much as I despise Tkachuk Iād rather see his name on the cup than the alternative. - shack67

I think the credit card company wouldn't let you take on that kind of cap hit.

I'm not so sure.
They let me order new golf shoes last night.
Although they were at a much better discount than what Marner would have given me. |

I'm assuming all the small forwards from the USNDP with no physical play or defence, but plenty of offensive upside. |

I believe they were unavailable - already booked for meetings with the Penguins.

But seriously, has there ever been a case where an over-ager has been drafted and it's been a home run? |

I do believe that Treliving works pretty well with his scouting staff, and I think Toronto has a pretty good one. We'll see how some of the fringe guys they've been letting "develop" turn out. My guess is that there's a few serviceable guys in there, but no one really ground breaking since no one has even whelmed anyone at the AHL level, let alone overwhelming anyone.
Treliving's Calgary draft record started okay, and then seemed to peter out . . .
2014 Bennett, decent pick - but at #4 for this pick they passed over Nylander (9), Ehlers (8) and Larkin (15) who would have all probably provided more value to Calgary.
It wasn't a super deep draft, but there were some serviceable names available outside of the first round and Calgary missed on all of them.
In 2015 Calgary entered the year with their 1st and 4 2nd round picks. They traded the 1st and 2 2nds for Dougie Hamilton. With 2 of their remaining 2nds they drafted Rasmus Andersson and Oliver Kylington and with their 6th they drafted Andrew Mangiapane.
In 2016 they drafted Tkachuk at 6th - which is pretty impressive when you consider that Columbus, Edmonton and Vancouver all had to screw up first with their PLD, Puljujarvi and Juolevi picks. They would also add Dube in the 2nd, and Adam Fox in the 3rd, when informed that he wasn't going to sign with them, they packaged Fox with Ferland and Hamilton to Carolina for Lindholm and Hanifin. He also wouldn't sign with Carolina (which they knew up front) and he was sent to the Rangers for a 2nd & 3rd.
That's about where Treliving's draft luck sort of seemingly dries up - in 2017 they picked Valimaki - but it's a particularly effective draft outside of the top 3 or 4 players from the draft. In 2018 they added Pospisil, 2019 was Jakob Pelletier and Dustin Wolf, and 2020 was Connor Zary, who might be okay. It's tough to judge 2021 - 2022 yet. If I was guessing Coronato is probably the only plausible NHL'er in the group and he's not overly convincing.
Most of Calgary's successful core was drafted in 2015-2016, with Gaudreau and Backlund alraedy in tow (along with Monahan and Giordano). |

Not _quite_ your question, but just found out from looking at Calgary's draft history that Mark Giordano was never drafted. They signed him as an over-ager. Not too shabby.

Oh, there are plenty of examples of undrafted home runs (Ed Belfour, Adam Oates, Marty St. Louis, etc.).
But I'd really like to know if a drafted over-ager has ever panned out. š¤ |

Per the bolded. The only person who failed were the Canucks, because the top-4 were all a mix of Matthews/Laine/PLD/Poolparty with PLD being the weird entrant at the time. Juolevi was in the teens and not even close to being the top ranked d. |

LAK traded him to Utah for a 2nd, so I'm not sure if I would call him a "home run", but I guess the jury is still out. |

There's tons of examples from 30-40 years ago, when Europe and the USSR were opening up guys to play in the NHL. |
