~18.5M TO SPEND. - The Law
Circling back to this ...hmmmm. Critical queston for Tree, again assuming MM is back - is he better off going cheap on the goalie (eg. 2.5M for Brossoit) and having more to spend up front OR is he better going all in and trading for a goalie at $5-$6M (eg. Saros or Markstrom) and going cheap up top (eg. Robertson slots in instead of Domi or some other UFA winger).
Today I'm leaning goalie. Get the 2C, the blueliner and the goalie with your 18.5M and go cheap/young on the wings. |

I think they need a good goalie with Woll.
Enough with the mid to lower tier goalies thinking they will get it done. They won't. |

he'll take up that extra contract spot the Leafs could use on someone else - dmnted
If they like him then they'll utilize a roster spot on him. Some of the names on 50 man rosters couldn't hold Kase's jock strap ...if he's healthy. |

The high upside and zero risk other than a financial loss......Perfect player to target.
Makes zero sense not to target him, unless he wants too much but I doubt it. - Santo_44
let's not forget about the contract spot as well.
The Leafs were at the limit but that limit will ease soon if it hasn't already. |

There are multiple players under contract in the leafs org with far far lower upside and probability of being an NHL player than Kase.
They signed Nicolas Mattinen ffs. - Santo_44
I fondly remember being just a few rows away from Kase when Zadorov absolutely destroyed him |

Saros at $5M is intriguing. I think with Askarov coming they'll be shy about giving Saros an 8 yr NMC lifetime type contract. So this summer is their best chance to move him for value.
Maybe too much competition for him (and Ullmark and Markstrom) though. Price will be high. Kings, Devils, Avs, Leafs, Sabres, Flyers, Canes, Wings ... |

If trade options for Saros or Markstrom are too expensive (and I imagine they would be), then Brossoit would be a great choice. I think he's underrated and could manage 30-40 games (even though I don't think he's ever done more than 25). He's really matured his game the last couple of years - and I thought he was decent enough before that. Other likely affordable goalie options would be Talbot, Stolarz or even Kahkonen.
For D they could basically target Tanev, Pesce, Dillon, Zadorov, Demelo, Grzelcyk, Forbort, Edmundson, Boosh, Kylington - even OEL or Skjei - all depending on price and what you're looking for.
Domi, Perron & Henrique up front as likely very affordable type of options with some decent versatility. Toffoli or DeBrusk as more expensive options with less versatility.

I don't believe they will trade him, but if they do, it won't be until after July 1st.
He gets $7,250,000 on July 1st, and $775,000 the rest of the year.
IMHO, MLSE eats that $7,250,000 to get a much larger return. - Atomic Wedgie
This.
Not much chance they move him prior to July 1st...if at all. |

On the goaltending, I agree - sniff around on Saros, Markstrom and Ullmark and measure the cost. I think it'll get too much and the Leafs don't have a lot of depth/youth to play with. Brossoit sounds like the best option to sign and probably comes in around 2.5-3.5 depending on competition.
On the defence, I think they need to focus on quality over quantity a bit. Trade Lilly b/c he's going to be too expensive for 3rd pairing with his arb rights. I'd trade him for a less experienced 3rd pairing guy - another Benoit. Land on one guy to partner with Rielly and a puck moving vet to play on the 3rd pair. Boom, Brad's your uncle.
Up front, I'm leaning youth/cheap on the wings and spending the money on a 2C. Knies, Robertson, McMann down the left is fine by me (b/c they have to pick where to spend). Get a 2C - Stephenson, Karlsson, etc...? If you need help on the wings that's easier to find at the deadline. Plus I like the idea of giving Knies a lot of room/responsibility to grow this year.
But of course all of this changes if they move MM. |

Broisoitt just seems like another Samsonov type goalie.
Mrazek
Murray
Sammy
So over signing these mid level goalies, rarely turns out.
Can't hold out hoping you get a Hill like run, it is rare. |

I agree but the Leafs may not have the best offer on the table for the other 3 guys. Lots of teams will be in on them. |

Because Jack Johnson is the most athlete name ever. He should be required to sport a 50's Johnny Unitas crewcut and dispense salt tablets on the bench.

Charlie Elick - soon to become the new overhyped prodigy in Toronto and the bustiest of busts everywhere else. Projected to go in the 20's.
Elick is a very intriguing pro prospect. He is one of the best skaters in the draft, with a smooth and powerful skating stride. When those feet are combined with his 6-3 frame, strong compete and a little mean streak, he has the potential to be a legit shutdown defenseman in the NHL. Elick isn't a natural puck-mover and can make some questionable puck decisions. He will need to clean that up, but he has good hands and isn't a negative with the puck on his stick. In a role where he just needs to defend well and make a basic outlet, he could potentially have an NHL career. |
