Exactly. Look at the Rangers. It’s been 6 years since they sent out that letter indicating they were rebuilding. They also traded away way more players than the Flyers have at this point including Rick Nash, who got them a 1st which they were able to turn into K’Andre Miller. They traded Hayes, netting a 1st that NY traded back to WPG to get Trouba. They got lucky with the lottery to get Lafrenière. And then they also got lucky that Trouba, Panarin, and Fox only wanted to play for NY and nobody else. Trading away many of those higher priced veterans gave them the cap space to add Panarin, Trouba, and eventually Fox. They already had Zibanejad in house who was only 25. Kreider was the only vet they really kept.
The Rangers have gotten EXTREMELY lucky and it’s still taken 6 years. - Schmojo
The Rangers are a good example of why time lines are for the most part people talking out of their azz.
No one knows how the drafts are going to go….or what prospect is going to pop and when….or Free agents are going to work out…or who might or might not be traded. I guess anyone can make them selves seem smart by throwing out crazy #s and point to an example….but they really don’t know poop. Every situation is different.
What we do know is you need competent people in charge making good hockey decisions over a period of time and regardless you need some luck as well…could be 2 years ….could be 4….I really have no idea….and neither does anyone else. |

Not Bill but I have been a fan since 1970 and remember this well.
Fred was a coach in the Ranger's minor leagues for several years.
He was more or less promised a shot to coach the Rangers.
When that did not happen, the Flyers hired him.
The Rangers (illegally) offered him the position of GM and coach, which he accepted.
I think the Rangers paid a fine and maybe the Flyers got a Rangers draft pick.
Fred did get the Rags to the Finals that first season. - FlyersFanInPhoenix
Not just a pic they got The Rat 🐀. Fan favorite |

Nobody here ever talks about how the original rumor prior to the Ryan Ellis deal was to get Mattias Ekholm. |

Probably because Ekholm was the guy the Preds were expected to move. They may have decided to keep Ekholm because of his durability. Maybe the Flyers wanted Ellis more with his PP rep.

i feel like this deal was purely for appearances - i think both teams knew the players would likely never play again, or at least not at a high level. trading mistakes basically. |

3-3 now in game 3 series 1-1. But the play I am seeing suggests Dallas in 6 or even 5.

Impressive win for Dallas.
They were thoroughly outplayed in the first period. Withstood the Oilers surge, and came back strong in the second.
Dallas is a very good team..loaded with Good Vets, great young guys, and a great balance of skill, grit and hard work. They never seem frazzled, and are a threat from everywhere.
We can only wish. |

Just a really deep team. Even keel. They really are a complete team. I don’t think I’ll count out the Oilers yet. When you have the two best players on the planet and some really good pieces that compliment them, you are never really out of a series….but I agree with PT on this one….up to now Dallas looks like the better team. |

My 16 year old sons favorite team is Dallas. I have watched over 65 Dallas games this year with him. They are a very complete team.... from goaltending to defense to the forwards. Stankovin is a great little player that plays much bigger than his size. He was a nice second rounder for sure. Jim Nill has done a great job with the team..trades, signings and drafting. Cap wise, they sit nicely too.
Not counting McDavid and Co out, but Dallas has handled the reigning Champs, MacKinnon and crew...both of which have a better all around team than Edmonton, and upper end talent that is comparable to Edmonton...Mackinnon, Rantanen and Makar is pretty equal to McDavid, Pasternak and Ekholm. Point is, Dallas has handled tougher teams this year, and looked really good doing it.
Dallas just doesn't seem phased by the other teams talent, and has responded nicely after going down a goal or two. Oettinger is the stud we hoped we had in Hart, and is starting to creep into the elite goalie status in my books. He has had a great run so far this year in the playoffs.
Dallas is going to be really hard to beat 4 times in 7 games. It only happened one time this season, back in February. |

If they could get Pavelski and Duchene going, nobody might be able to beat them in 7.
