Hmm, let me think. Remember when Treliving himself wanted to get rid of Monahan's $6.4m cap hit? He attached a 1st round pick and convinced Montreal to take Monahan. Calgary received future considerations, which amounted to nothing. But they did get $6.4m of cap space.
How about Boston that wanted to escape Taylor Hall's $6m cap hit? They convinced Chicago to take him. The return was two AHL minimum wage players. Saved the Bruins $6m.
Should I keep going? - HockeyBuzzed
Monahan isn't near the players Marner and JT are, same as Hall at the time of the trade. But sure, let me know when an almost 100 point winger, a top 2 center were moved for peanuts.

Toronto fans treat Toronto players like gods has become a scandal? Says the Leafs fans who obessesively follow the Leafs on hockey forums?
In other news, water is wet, grass is green and Leafs fans have an unrivaled ability to scapegoat absolutely any player at any time for any reason. - Rare_Jewel
No - the scandal is that Marner believes fans treat him like a God. It's laughable.
Same with JT waiving to go to ... ... ... Buffalo.

No, it's not a scandal. It's a laughably stupid clickbait story created by idiots like Luke Fox and slopped up by the emotionally triggered and intellectually deficient. |

Anyone that actually listened to the interview can tell Marner was complementing the fans the words just came out wrong..Not the biggest Marner guy but he is going to get crucified for this slip of the tounge. |

Probably.
Imagine Keefe et al are gone on Friday, but they will want to see what a new coaching staff can do first. They will base it on Toronto likely having beaten arguably the top team in the East had the powerplay not stunk and peeps were healthy.
Probably Todd McLellan.
If it somehow gets worse, it will be tradeline bargain bonanza on Bay if Zeus waives his NMC.
Further, the goalie market is absolute poop. More choices in 2025 when JT/Marner money is freed up.
Nobody is going to make a trade for Marner that helps the Leafs out (like a Saros for Marner dream), and I don't believe they'll play hardball with JT.
Absolutely ZERO chance of an extension though. Can't happen.
Right!?

Arrrrrrrguably.
Would put NYR ahead a smidge, but FLA is one bad-Bob streak away from Buhbyesville.
Boston is solid and prepared. Play a team game.

Screw it. Julius wants in.
Go for the Triumvirate with Quenneville pacing and swearing for the whole game regardless of the score. |

Habs, Lightning, Panthers ...and Bruins this year? You knock out the Leafs and you're almost guaranteed to reach the Cup final!

I think he's fine as a 6/7 option, but whatever, find another puck mover for Benoit that's cheap. |

If he's willing to get paid like a 6/7 but he's got arbitration and going to get paid. |

I think the boys on Overdrive had it right yesterday when they said something to the effect of: the problem started when Dubas insisted on sticking with this core 4. It wasn’t about the Leafs winning the cup, it became about proving they could win a cup with these 4. It became about them. Everything was given to them and it stopped being about the team winning.
Going forward the management needs to stop coddling players and they need to be ruthless. Re: Las Vegas! |

Think FLA will let Reinhart go to whomever is going to overpay and spend that loot in part on a re-sign of Montour with a raise.
Would love him on the team though.
Not sure what Carolina is going to do. Pesce would be nice, but I think Chatfield is just starting to find his own. Basically the Hurricanes 4th/5th d-man and fills in nicely higher up when needed. Might be able to steal him more cheaply. Bit of a gamble. |

Ok. Well since I can't find the exact same scenario then I guess you win the argument. Toronto could never give Marner or Tavares away for nothing. It can't happen. I mean teams generally don't give away top talent, because teams generally don't paint themselves into a corner like Toronto has. But yeah, you win, Treliving himself gave away Monahan to gain $6.4m of cap space but that would be impossible with Marner... |

Both Tavares and Marner have full NMC...it's really not up to the guy living in a tree.
Piss off those players and they both walk away next summer and the Leafs get nothing in return. |

Dear Mitch. We're not extending you. And we just hired a non-nonsense coach who has no problem burying you down the lineup, yanking you off the PP. So if you want to have a big contract year, it's not happening here. Would ypu accept a trade to X instead?
Dear John. We're not extending you. Prepare for a year of bottom 6 duty, no more PP, lots of PK. Or accept a trade to Y.
The return on these trades is zero. The $22m of cap space is the reward. Now go sign Pesce or Montour. Sign Matt Roy. Sign DeBrusk. Maybe bring back Domi or Bertuzzi. Lots of options if you dump those two clowns. But the threats have to be real. - HockeyBuzzed
There will be no Dear John and I think he is extend 2~3 @4.5M and either the 3rd line center or 2nd line LW. |
