If you were Toronto, you'd look to Buffalo for advice?

It was a serious question. If you want to keep Marner, what's the plan to address those needs (while spending even more on your top 4 next year)?

I don't care what they do, but something needs to change.

I would ask Tavares where he’d want to move his NMC too. If he doesn’t waive, the core 4 has their last dance year next year.

I’d do a much better job on the defence corps, give Woll the net full time and look for a different 1B.

Give Nick Robertson a full time roster spot and hope Easton Cowan or Frazer Minten can give me NHL minutes at some point.

Then at the deadline, instead of the major moves being Lybushkin and Edmundson, I’d make much better trades to acquire depth for a playoff run when cap is lower and teams will retain salary.

How do you do that with no cap, almost no picks, and no prospects?

If Tavares doesn't waive, they don't have many options.

They’ll be a cap limit team again and they’ll find a way just like 80% of the league that dances around the cap ceiling.

Doing a much better job on the defense and at the trade deadline is a nebulous plan at best.

They do have their 1st round pick in the upcoming draft.

They also have a unique opportunity.

They can either do the soft reboot, centered around Matthews and Nylander this offseason by trading both Tavares and Marner, or they can treat each of the two as expiring contracts, and they'll have plenty of cap space after the 24-25 season.

Guessing their offseason starts with firing Shanahan.

If UPL is going to get say $4.5m for 4 or 5 years, what would be the harm in bridging him for 1 year at say $3.25m as a show me contract? I'd say very little.

If he goes on to play at say a .915 rate, what does that do to his contract? Up it to $5m?

Conversely, if he falters back to say .900 or below, then the Sabres are fvcked with an unmoveable contract for 5 years.

There is unnecessary risk taken by signing him long term this offseason. Is that really what they should do?
I think not either.

VGK are going to need do some magic again to keep that band together.
Martinez and Marchessault are likely gone, unless they decide to trade out another F. That gets them close before their UFA and RFA get raises...so a couple more moves likely.

It will be interesting to watch.

What's his recourse if he doesn't want to accept a one year deal?

Bet on himself. Doesn't want to be here long term. Team assures him another year of production gets him a long term deal.

Those are the only three reasons I can think of.

“Trade me”

“Hey Kev I saved your ass from not being one of the worst teams in the NHL this year. I’m the reason you still have a job”

Has another good year and Sam’s himself out of here or demands 8mil+

I celebrated the Leafs loss too. Glass half full stuff, at least Vegas didn't get to buy another cup.

In all honesty, I'd hate Vegas for what they are doing regardless of whether or not Jack was there. Him losing is just an added bonus. (frank) Mark Stone ten times more than Jack.

Sure, he can go scorched earth.

He has virtually no control... RFA for 2 years right?
