Yes, Atkinson will be bought out, there is really no other option. He has 0 trade value and the Flyers would never embarrass him by sending him down.
- jd250

So you want to add more dead cap money when they are already have dead cap money for TDA, Hayes, Petersen and Johansen? That will be close to 10 million in dead cap space.

If the team is "Rebuilding", just let him play out his last year on the contract.

So the only other option for the Flyers is to keep Atkinson on the team as a healthy scratch. Is that what you think is the best option?
- jd250

Yep, I do. Then you are done with his contract after the season for good.

What’s more embarrassing….being sent down because you are no longer an NHL player or buying him out? It’s a waste for what they are trying to accomplish to waste a buyout next year and have more $ move to 25-26.
- landros 2

So keep him on the roster as a healthy scratch or a 4th line player?

Or.......send him to Lehigh, he earns his money and the Flyers open a roster spot.

Seriously, this is what we are doing now? Drysdale is 21 years old! He was rushed in to the NHL by the Ducks, and not surprisingly his body was not ready for NHL hockey. There is still plenty of off-seasons for Drysdale to build up his strength and develop into a steady NHL defenseman with high offensive skill. Give the kid a chance.

And as far as Gauthier is concerned, I'm sorry, but having a RHS top 4 defenseman is INFINITELY MORE valuable than a top 6 winger. Gauthier will put up his garbage time points playing with Karlsson in front of a fan base that could care less. Best of luck to him. I care about seeing Drysdale. Let me break it to you, Drysdale is not Kale Makar. He will take a few years to develop. Patience is required.

- jd250

Right, and the result of that has been a major shoulder injury that has required surgery and might require more. Doesn't matter who played who. the damage is still done to the players body.

Gauthier will be twice the player Drysdale is. It was not a fair trade...a top prospect league wide, not just on the Flyers..traded for a small dman that has had a major injury already, and seems a bit brittle, and a second. I could stomach it more if we got a first and Drysdale for Gauthier.

So now, the highest goal scoring player in the NCAA in the last 25 years is going to just pick up garbage points because of other players skills? Give me a break.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Cutter Gauthier, who scored the most goals in the NCAA in the last 25 years during Boston College's run to the Frozen Four, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

Gauthier's 38 goals are tied with Ryan Potulny, who played for Minnesota in 2005-06, for most by a collegiate player in the last 25 seasons. The center also led the NCAA in game-winning goals (10), was second in points (65) and tied for second in power-play goals (13).

Give it a rest. He is a hell of a player.

100%, i cant even believe this is a debate. We didnt make the playoffs, arent even close to contending, why buy players out? We should be shooting for top 5 picks right now.

We already know the Flyers are dumb and will buyout Atkinson. They have zero patience.

Just like they should've done with Hayes, just ride out the bad contract. But Flyers gonna Flyer.

Like who? I am not counting MM at this time. There is not 1 player on the flyers roster who I say yes lets build around this player. They are all complimentary plyers to me.

Maybe JD (just based on potential).

- hello it's me 2050

Besides those two.
As far as young guys…I like York. I think Foerster showed enough this year as well. I’m a fan of Tippets game. I think Brink showed he can play in this league but like all pup’s needs to find consistency. Some of the other young D showed some potential although Im not ready to roll out the red carpet.

They have guys like Farabee and yes…Frost…that the jury is still out. They both have some value should the Flyers choose to move on.

I don’t want to say Konecny until they either re-sign or trade. If Sanheim remains I thought he had his best season as a pro.

No sure fire stars…I agree.

Deslaurier needs to be in Lehigh next season. That contract can be buried for the remainder of it.

If I can't move Atkinson then I send him to Lehigh so that roster spot can used for someone else.

Have to look at moving Laughton

I believe they need to move Konecny.

Move out Ristolainen if you can.

These moves I think NEED to happen.

- J35Bacher

Agreed... they need to happen but I am not sure they will. TK, I would say, is 90% going to get extended. Laughts most likely will stay put and Torts loves Cam too much to send him to the AHL.

The rebuild was always a rebrand. A change in marketing to assuage a fanbase who had turned sour and lost patience faster than Dave Scott lost his testicular fortitude during the Hextall years.

Hilferty and Scott have the same goals. One is competent at fooling the fanbase the other was not.

- StepfordSam

Spot on.

This "rebuild" is nothing ore than a hard marketing sell to the fanbase. This is another retool on the fly.

If he plays that crappy….that’s what the AHL is for. They don’t need the cap space…that’s the main reason teams buy guys out.

The Flyers are not in the position to grossly overpay for a free agent in this class. And with the cap going up, I believe the free agents contracts that will be handed out this off-season will be gross overpays. The Flyers are best to sit this one out.
- jd250

Oh I agree JD...they should not be signing anyone...unless something special falls into their lap. Make some trades, keep the big 3 bad contracts, no need to impact the 25-26 season because of bad contracts. play the young guys and take advantage of their ELC's so the bad caps can just be absorbed. The year is probably a lost year anyways due to where they are at.

yes or see how he looks in camp and preseason. No issue giving him another chance. Best course of action is let his contract expire.

Flyers did not buyout Hayes. They retained. So they did as well as they could as far as getting rid of him. Especially since he’s confirmed absolutely cooked.

I wonder if DB will sort of address the state of the team and what his mindset is for the summer today

I think they have a few pieces of a core….but Christ that can’t be it.
- landros 2

I guess they have a "core" but they are not moving the needle much. They still lack elite young talent which is what I would consider the core of any good team that is in the contending category.

Forester and Tipp is the core right now. Then you have TK who will be resigned for a ludicrous amount. Hopefully, Coots gets healthy and can come back at 75-80% of his old self.

This "core" outside of Forester, York & Tipp is not what I would call a core. They still need to add at least 2 centers and a #1 Dman. I love TK and expect him to be extended which would be a mistake. They need assets to obtain elite talent.
