Take me out of the ball game,
Take me out of the stadium so I can beat traffic;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack for the road,
I don't care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team from my car radio,
If they don't win, it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game from my car. |

Call me a blue Kool-Aid chugger, but if Matthews gets a few more, I think you have to give him the Hart Trophy.
He's doing something that has only been by the elite of the elite.
Let's say he gets to 68.
The only other guys who have done that are:
Gretzky, Hull, Lemieux, Mogilny, Esposito, Selanne, Kurri, Bernie Nichols, Bossy.
And there are fancy stats to show that what he is doing is probably top 3 of all time, when adjusted for era. - Atomic Wedgie
Some further perspective. For the top 20 single season goal scorers:
92 goals: Gretzky 81-81: Hart Trophy
87 goals: Gretzky 83-84: Hart Trophy
86 goals: Hull 90-91: Hart Trophy
85 goals: Lemieux 88-89: Gretzky won the Hart. This was absolute robbery. They each had 114 assists, Gretzky only had 54 goals. But it was Gretzky's first year in LA, so they gave it to him.
76: Mogilny and Selanne 92-93: Lemieux won the Hart, but he had 69 goals and 160 points.
76: Esposito 70-71: Orr won it, with 102 assists and 139 points. Espo came 2nd.
73: Gretzky 84-85: Hart Trophy
72: Hull 89-90: Messier won it. They gave it to him because it was a good story about Messier making the Oilers his, and finished 2nd in points. Hull finished 3rd in Hart Trophy voting.
71: Kurri 84-85: Weird he only finished 14th in Hart voting. Gretzky won the Hart, with 73 goals, 135 assists. Kurri finished 2nd in scoring with 135 points. So yeah, Wayner probably deserved it.
71: Gretzky 82-82: Hart Trophy
70: Hull 91-92: No idea why Messier won that year. Hull finished 3rd in Hart voting.
70: Nichols 88-89: see above. 15 goals less than Lemieux.
69: Lemieux 92-93: Hart Trophy
69: Lemieux 95-96: Hart Trophy
69: Bossy 78-79: he finished 7th - tied with Salming. Won by Trottier, who took the Art Ross. Bossy had ten more goals than Dionne, who finished second in the goal scoring race. This and 85-86 are about the only precedents for ignoring who scores the most goals when voting on the Hart Trophy.
68: Esposito 73-74: Hart Trophy
68: Kurri 85-86: Gretzky had 215 points. 'nuff said. Kurri finished 4th in scoring, but Gretzky was 1st and Coffey was 3rd, so he was in Gretzky's shadow.
68: Bossy 80-81: Bossy was 4th in Hart voting. 45 points behind Gretzky, who won the Hart.
Seems to me that scoring 10+ more goals than the next guy should force him into the top 3.
And if he gets to 68, that makes him one of the top 10 goal scorers of all time.
Hart-worthy. |

If Matthews gets 70 goals and those 2 guys both get 100 assists would’ve it seem more difficult to get 70 then it is to get a 100? Considering 2 guys do it in one year? - bryant
So here's a fun stat:
100 assists has only been done 13 times.
Orr did it once.
Lemieux did it once.
Gretzky did it 11 times.
I think the 3 finalists have to be McDavid, Kucherov and Matthews. |

I must say, it's quite interesting that so many players can be considered for the Hart without it sounding stupid.
If Pittsburgh makes the playoffs, Crosby might get nominated and it would be fine.
