Would be ..I move him b/c his cap hit will be doubled with arbitration eligibility. Leafs need that space to improve rather than spend it on a 3rd pairing guy.

I don't hate him ..he just hasn't taken that "top 4" step and will be too expensive for the Leafs bottom pair.

Similar theory for Robertson ...I like him but you look at the roster and have to wonder if he's an ideal fit ....he's been pretty good so I think he might have better value as a trade trip this summer.

The run to the Cup could change all of this thinking though ...

Lilly doesn't HAVE to goto arb. He can sign a 1 year deal. But sure, if he wants too much he can be moved. I mean to be fair to you, he isn't a Tree draft pick so it's possible he wants to move him anyway for reasons you've stated.

As for Robertson. I believe I heard some experts talking about him recently and how he's playing pretty well and getting points while being a 3rd line guy so he shows a lot of promise still. Which again, you can use as a trade chip OR simply slot in top 6 next year depending on who walks/stays already.

I'm in ...

Rielly - Tanev
?? - McCabe
Benoit - Timmins

I'd throw a big number at Pesce too. Leafs have the space assuming they are content to let Bert go.

Tree might just get Zadorov as well. UFA.

“Run to the cup”!! Are the Leafs Touring the sports hall of fame this spring? That’s the only place they will see the cup. Unless you’re talking athletic supports! 😂

Looking ahead to next year ..

Rielly - ??
McCabe - Lyubushkin
Benoit - Timmins

I'm guessing a couple of large D are the primary targets to fill in the blanks.

Ciao Brodie, Gio, and Lilly.

If they can get Lyubushkin $2.5M/3yrs. A little less then what Schenn got with the Preds

you can pencil in Tanev
- drexel

Unless Tanev takes 4 to 4.5M on a 3 year deal, the Leafs will not be able to afford him.

I pissed out a 4mm kidney stone. I kept it and put it in a labeled gemjar as a micromount specimen. I have it with the rest of my mineral collection.

After the grief it caused me, I felt entitled to a new rock.

I wouldn't remove Lilly yet. Lilly and Timmins can fight for a spot, plus injuries. Carrying 7 would be fine.
- Aaron_85

If Lilly goes, then Tre either has or know that he will have, a right shot D in place

He probably keeps Edmundson or the boosh as well.
Depending on cost

But i dont see him being able to sign both Z and Tanev.

And most of that cap space will be taking up by Willie's extension.
Also AM is about 2m more.
Next year is going to be tight.
The year after, we should be fine.

He might be a little young for the full Gio discount, but the word was that Tanev was willing to take less to play in Toronto. I guess it depends on the offers he does receive - because if someone is willing to overpay you and give you term certainty, that's awfully hard to pass up when you're 34 coming up on 35 and have an injury history.

But in general on the topic of our D as a whole . . . I'm not sure Liljegren really fits in. I like parts of his game but we need more guys who will win board battles and positional battles and protect the front of the net. You do need some puck movement and you get that in Rielly. Timmins is not physical but is typically fine in the 5/6 role and makes just $1.1m. I'd be inclined to keep him if only for his cost. I don't think Liljegren ever becomes much more than a bottom-4 D, but he does elevate his game with the right partner.

Dozzer won't like this one, seeing the "piece of poop AHLer" signed at an NHL wage and all. Is it conflicting for the "the professional coach Keefe agrees with me" argument if 'professional GM Treliving' does not?

His endlessly stupid takes are getting worse by the day, what an actual moron. Can't wait for the ridiculous validation technique deployed on this one. 🤦

There's some room for flexibility though despite the fact that it's tighter until the following year when JT's contract is up. I think at the very least there's room for change.

There are a number of holes to fill, but a lot of contracts are up: Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg, Murray, Muzzin, Brodie, Edmundson, Giordano, Lyubushkin, Samsonov and Jones totaling $34.5m - but a bunch of that is in LTIR, so obviously we don't see the full benefit of it.

If you assume our RFAs get a 10% raise you get something that looks like this:

Knies - Matthews - Marner
?? - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Holmberg - McMann
Dewar - Kampf - Reaves/Gregor

Rielly - ??
McCabe - Liljegren
Benoit - Timmins

Woll
??

$15m to find potentially 2 D, a goalie a 2LW and ideally a 3C.

So if you pencil in Tanev and Domi both at around $3m it leaves $9m to add a goalie, a 2LW, a 1B goalie and depth D. Maybe not THAT doable, but . . . doable-ish?

Grimey is a new one. Hey, while I'm endlessly taking up space in your head would you like me to think for you too? WE could do much better.
