At the extreme, an NHL team could have a winning % of .500 and win the Presidents Trophy with a Points % of .750 if they went 41-0-41. That's why P% is the only useful metric to compare teams and seasons since they did away with ties.
- Feanor

or do something that actually makes sense and make the point system equal and congruent for each game

Is it blinders? Or does he really believe this is the best shot to win the game?
- furio16

he can believe what he likes - the stats say he's 7-19 in OT in Philly.

Does being a .500 team and on the playoff bubble satisfy you as a Flyers fan?
- MJL

Certainly you asking stupid questions like this is not satisfying to anyone. Compared to where this team was the past two seasons, I am happy with the step the team has taken. At least we have had a real hockey season this year, as compared to the past two laughing stock seasons. This was a necessary step. Rome was not built in a day. In the end I am aligned to what Torts, Briere, Jones and Hilferty have consistently communicated throughout their short tenure, that the plan is to build a team that will legitimately compete for a cup year over year. I have not seen anything egregious that indicates this is not the plan.

The plan will be revealed when/if they resign TK.

Now I know how MJL feels when he has to put up with idiots like me.

The Flyers winning % this season is not .500, it is .562. When they went on their cup run it was .537. So like I said it was lower then than it is now.

MJL was just rounding it .500 to make a point.

You are living in your own twilight zone.

- WhiskeyMan

Ummm no!. Their points percentage is .562. LOL I didn't round anything.

Honestly, I don't know why this concept is so difficult for some. Currently, the Flyers have played 73 games. They have won 36 games and they have lost 37 games. They're currently a below .500 team.

Speaking of twilight zone.

This Flyers team has the 10th best P% out of 19 since the 2005 lockout. So that's what has the authentics all fired up - being the exact median.

When discussing the Flyers as a .500 team, we're not comparing them to other teams. Just looking at wins and losses.

I wish the standings would read GP (games played), P (Points) and P% (Points percentage). W-L-OTL is just cumbersome to follow

Your track record of properly assessing where the Flyers are at, is abysmal. Speaking of stupid. Also speaking of stupid, it's not about what they want to do or what their plan is. It's how they go about accomplishing that. Action and approach, not talk. That's what you don't get and what you'll never get. They have you hooked. You're their target fan. I'm going to tell you right now, what they're going to build. Unless they get very lucky in the draft. This is going to be another version of a team stuck in hockey purgatory. Not good enough to contend and too good to get the high draft picks to acquire elite talent. Capped out and trying to escalate and wheel and deal their way there. With Tortorella, an archaic dinosaur., a neophyte and inexperienced GM and an unqualified POHO who Tortorella has in his back pocket. The chances of them accomplishing what scarce few have in the modern cap era, are slim to none.

.500 isn't meaningful for hockey because an 123 point team and an 82 point team could both have a winning percentage of .500.

Sure it's possible that a team could win 41 games and lose 41 in OT. What would that teams point percentage be though. Has it ever happened or come close to happening?
Has an NHL team ever gone undefeated in regulation play? It's meaningful when discussing the Flyers because before last night, the Flyers had played 72 games and won 36 while losing 36. Many Flyers don't realize that the Flyers are a .500 team. Actually now below .500 with last nights loss in OT.

All of this talk/fear/worry about Torts getting a FO job.... what job would he be able to take?

The thought of him making roster decisions terrifies me. Torts will have a hard on having a team of poehlings and Hathaways but we'd turn into the new San Jose sharks if Torts has his choice of the line ups.

Also, in that scenario, i can see Torts making Shaw the coach while vicariously running the line up by telling shaw what to do.

It weird right now….I love the way they are playing….but they aren’t getting the stellar goaltending and the D is really missing Walker and Seeler as that stabilizing pair. With that said I have been impressed with Attard and Ginning. I also think Johnson has been an upgrade over Staal, even after last nights gaff.
I’d absolutely love to watch them in the playoffs…..every game matters…a tad more fun to watch then what we were forced too endure for a long time.

- landros 2

Attard and Ginning have been more then impressive. They've been thrown into what is essentially playoff hockey and they've more than held their own. If they keep this up I'd be happy to see them make the big club and maybe replace a higher and overpaid vet... looking st you, RR

Agreed. Neither one has looked out of place thus far and I notice Attard trying to join the play up ice quite often.

I don't know if I would go with impressive but they have held their own in limited minutes. I'd be interested to see if they would play in the playoffs or would the vets get the nod. Also brings up that the Flyers constantly avoid playing young players in some cases in favor of vet scrubs. You're rebuilding. Give the kids a shot.
