Also, what’s the deal with Ty Smith?? His numbers in WBS aren’t bad at all. Only 24 and I know some defenseman take a little longer to develop.

Feels kinda meh. But maybe that’s not terrible for a rental.

CAR has to win 3 rounds for PIT to get 1st round pick. So it’s most likely a 2nd round pick, let’s just go with that.

Flyers will take care of them in 1st round

The Fin is interesting. Seems to be putting up good numbers in a pro league.

The other two sound like middle six guys who can hack it on offense but not super spectacular.

Putting aside that this was Jake Guentzel and it sucks, our prospect pool did need an injection from a numbers standpoint and seems like we got that here. We still lack a crown jewel coming up the ranks, though, and it sucks we couldn’t get that in the Jake trade.

Marshall says he Blueger but a good playmaker. Sounds like a quintessential 3C. He also says that he’s pretty much NHL ready and no reason why he shouldn’t be with the big club right now.

Yikes, we went from Morrow and Blake to these guys. Trading a guy like Guentzel is not easy. What I would imagine happened is Dubas had the 6-7 teams interested and then he scared a bunch of them away. That left him with 2 teams and both knew it. I would bet Dubas had better offers and turned them down before getting stuck with this deal.

No 1st round pick, no top 5 prospect, yikes, yikes, and double yikes.

This was the 1 chance to get the quality prospect is my concern for the pens. I do think Dubas mis played this asking for the moon to start with.

Well we’re gonna be in the lottery so we’ll have another chance at a quality prospect soon.

Also the more I look at this Finn the more I think this trade could age well. This kid is basically a PPG in a pro league through two seasons aged 19 and 20

EDIT: never mind misread the number. Only close to PPG this year

Yep

Vegas and Edmonton moved on, Vancouver got spooked at the price

I don't HATE this deal, but Dubas should have let them keep one of those B prospects and demanded a 1st, or at least made the 1st conditional on the conference finals

Yea, I don’t understand. I could understand if it’s a prospect with a top 6 trajectory, but none of these players have that? So just take the 1st round pick.

It seems like Bunting was a cap dump. So Bunting a 1st, and the prospect the penguins felt most confident with.

Smith for a 2nd?

Jarry for ?? - Roll with Ned and Flower next year?

This value on paper from this trade doesn’t warrant any optimism. So, I look forward to him burning it down tomorrow. Better see 4-5 trades.

IDK this Russian center is apparently ready to hit the show and could be a 3C out the jump. If we got a 3C on an ELC I think that’s worth the downgrade from a 1st to a conditional 1st/2nd

I honestly would rather have taken 2 prospects with good upside versus a mediocre 5/6 asset package.

I did read some good things about these prospects, and when they are in a good prospect pool like Carolina's, maybe they got overlooked. I trust a team like Carolina. They've developed some decent players. But Id be feeling a lot better if Morrow or Blake were here.

Would that not have been better value, straight up?

I'd trade Jarry and Graves to NJ for nothing just to get rid of Graves

All due respect to your great country... I think Crosby would retire before he played in Canada.

Nice Yohe article in tribute to Jake. Guy was a playoff killer.

Ended it by pretty much saying Jake wanted to stay, but he was too old to give a new deal and too young to get the exit plans that Crosby/Malkin/Letang are getting. Seems to dispel any notion that he'd be back here in the summer.

His wife isnt from here, sometimes that keeps a player around, but she's from where he's from.

Yeah reading that idk. I kind of mentally turned the page a few days ago but I’m just not sure this was a good idea just for the sake of getting younger. Rakell and Smith are both older. You’d shed just as much cap and could probably get one prospect of the level we got for each.

It's a rental of a player who is going to test free agency is my guess, and why wouldn't he with cap going up.

2nd, could become a 1st. 3 prospects of some type.

On the broadcasts I was watching, all were saying pitts were looking for more players/ready prospects than picks (since they clearly want to be competitive next year in some capacity).

I think the reason other teams didn't want to do it is because they either didn't have the prospects Pens liked or weren't willing to move more than one and some picks. Plus Pens only retained 25% on the cap hit so I bet some of that came into play if other teams wanted more retention.

Hate to say it, but I said this would happen back in like Dec around here and you were the only one to have a reasonable stance about it. Everyone else assured me he was a core piece and resigning unless he didn't want to be here.

To be fair, now that Jake is gone it's possible one or both of Rakell and Smith are moved tomorrow. Considering Smith doesn't want to be in the East, would make sense. At the least I think he's done as a pen by the draft or at the draft.
