NHL officiating is definitely the model of inconsistency. Only the NFL may actually be worse. It really comes diwn to the players recognizing the tendencies of the officiating crew and understanding the trends in the game.
Regardless, the Isles become extremely careless late in games and it's killed them, inconsistent officials or not. - keaner17
I think many of the Islander players cannot keep up with the speed and intensity when the other teams are pressing and they take bad penalties. |

I think that's true. Unfirtunately I think there are also a few of them who lack good anticipation and get caught reacting late to players, therefore being forced to hook, slash or hold.
There's also just a certain amount of recklessness from guys who take needless crosschecking and high sticking penalties. |

I never blame the officiating because it's a disaster all around. It's basically like a tornado...destructive, random, and just as likely to pass you by and wreck someone else's day as the opposite. Is there some bias toward certain teams or certain players? Maybe, but that's near the bottom on the list of problems with officiating...well under general incompetence, the insane subjectivity in the rules ("it's when he intended to blow the whistle," or "is that a distinct kicking motion?"), and having two refs with different ideas of what's a penalty and what's not calling the same game at the same time anywhere on the ice.

I think the one that blew my mind, which stung us, was when they determined 'if the player was in the act of shooting the puck, the whistle blowing before it went in doesn't matter"
That said, officiating is bad everywhere. The NFL is pathetic. MLB's Angel Hernandez makes more bad calls in a season than 20 NHL refs. |

That stuff drives me crazy. Just make it simple: The play is dead when the whistle blows. That's something that's easily determined. Or, pucks either can or cannot go in off skates...that eliminates the 30,000 super slow-mo replays where we're trying to figure out if that last-second slide of the skate is a kick or a redirection.
And agreed...I don't know any fan of any team in any sport who says, "The officiating is amazing!"

The contradiction of 'when the ref intends to blow the whistle' versus 'whistle doesn't matter if the player is in the process of shooting' makes no sense. |

Scott Mayfield, defenseman

Yep, that was his guy that scored too. That's the one I was confused by, did he think he was switching off? He went full Mayfield, never go full Mayfield. |

Could have been a miscommunication between him and Clutterbuck. But given who it was, I'm comfortable giving Mayfield the blame until someone says otherwise |
