depends on where you are from. I say islay.

like just the way it's written?

i heard some guy in a scotch review on you tube say it some way that i think he might have been dyslexic.

what's the difference between "peaty" and "smokey" in the reviews? they don't mean the same thing, right?

The peat makes them smokey so it's the same thing generally speaking.

interesting. i had a feeling these two guys doing a review were jabronis. they looked like they were real dum dums and one of them claimed whatever they were drinking was peaty but not smokey.

then there was a big long argument in the comments about what was what.

I'm sure it adds other subtle aromas and flavours but smoke is the most obvious thing to me at least. Some of the more aggressively peated Scotch Whiskys are like a bonfire in a glass.

Peat contributes not only smoke but nuances of iodine (especially in the case of Islay peat), seaweed, salt and damp earth. It’s an acquired taste, to be sure, but it’s by no means confined to whisky-sipping veterans.

i understand. i figure a real hardcore scotch drinker considers irish whiskey for lightweights because i guess it isn't smokey pretty much at all.

but i think that's why i want to try it. i think i might really like it. as long as they aren't so sweet that it makes you sick or whatever. but i figure they aren't that sweet.

i figure bourbon is in between scotch and irish whiskey as far as the smokiness goes. and i like bourbon so i think i'll probably like irish whiskey.

I think hardcore Scotch drinkers probably appreciate any good barrel aged spirit. It's that I'm not hardcore enough if anything.

You can get plenty of lightly peated Scotchs that have very little peat character though. Aberlour A'bunadh (one of the first bottles I bought) is actually really sweet if anything. Speyside Whiskys are good for people who aren't huge on peat typically.

speyside whiskeys are what i've settled on due to exactly that fact. less smoky.

i go for the glens when i'm out and can afford good stuff. i have the "cheapy" chivas regal and johnnie walker black blends in my house.

i hear good things about this speyburn 10 year old and that's a single malt that's apparently ridiculously affordable so i want to try that too.

My fav cheap blend was always Teachers Highland Cream. J&B is good too.

If you ever see it you should try Forty Creek. It's a Canadian Whisky and it's really good. It's pretty damn cheap here for some reason but it's world class I think.

I have never tried Speyburn myself. I've seen it in bars but I can't buy it in stores so I've never bothered trying it.

Jamesons, Bushmills and Tullamore Dew are the only ones I've ever tried that I can think of. Jamesons is the least expensive.
