The Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes have been a feel-good story on the ice, remaining within striking distance of a playoff spot past the season’s midpoint. There’s a lot of optimism. But the elephant in the room remains their arena situation, which is still undetermined.

The Coyotes can’t play in the 4,600-seat Mullett Arena forever. Word out of the December Board of Governors meeting, per The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston, was that “either the Coyotes finally produce a concrete, shovel-in-the-ground arena plan by the end of January or else the team could get relocated.”

Daly this week indicated to The Athletic that he doesn’t have a “deadline” for final completion of the process — just assurances that the process is proceeding according to plan. “We are told by the club that everything that needs to happen has been happening according to schedule,” Daly said. The Coyotes, through a spokesperson, would only say that they have no update to provide on the arena at this point.

Walsh appeared frustrated not only by the lack of progress but the lack of communication with the NHLPA, which he called “very disappointing.”

“They have not had conversations with me at all,” Walsh said. “I believe they’ve been talking to the league, but they’ve not talked to me about it, which I think is a little strange. You would think they’d want to keep us up to date because we’ve been pretty vocal about it. I’m sticking to what I said at the very beginning. The players deserve and will play in a better arena. They have to.

“A lot of time has gone by. I was in Arizona probably a year ago now. … We were talking about ballot questions at that point. They felt positive about that. That didn’t happen. They were talking about, ‘Oh, we’re going to find a new place pretty quickly.’ The year has gone by and they haven’t found anything, at least to my knowledge. So the clock is ticking on Arizona, in my opinion.”

How long can this go on for? How long can the NHL wait?

“I’m hoping within the next couple weeks, we will have some concrete information on what’s going on again,” Walsh said. “I’ve talked to commissioner Gary Bettman about it. He’s got me up to date about on what he knows. But I’m surprised by the Coyotes. I met the owner. I don’t know the president that well, but we have connections from Boston and the fact I haven’t gotten a call is surprising.

“The PA is not a throwaway organization.”

Asked if the NHL has prepared contingency plans from a scheduling perspective for next season (i.e. a city for relocation) if the arena situation doesn’t come together, Daly said, “I would say that we will be prepared for any contingency.”

The Utah Jazz’s ownership group, notably, has filed paperwork for the “initiation of formal expansion process” with the NHL.
