This is exactly why his agent negotiated the large signing bonus. But taxes don’t come into play when a player decides where to sign or play

He allows them for established vets and 2/3 of those reasons you gave for him leaving are...not true. Not even sure if the 3rd one is actually true or not.

He did get one right. JT’s wife hated Long Island and was working in Toronto. I’m sure that wasn’t the only reason he went to Toronto but I’m sure it was a big part.

Yeah that's (frank)ing wild

I'm curious why they're only focused on the first year's bonus. He gets a monster bonus every year on July 1st, breakdown of each year below:

He's presumably going to get the shit audited out of him with frequency now, so I wonder if they're going to come after more than half of every other bonus too?

Are they going to try and collect like $37M in back taxes from him?

- eichiefs9

I think he’s claiming that the contracts initial bonus was sent to his New York bank, and thereby should be taxed at a different rate.

canada is such a poophole communist country. those apology addicted mac and cheese eaters need to overthrow their government already

It’s actually awful what’s going on there. That Trudeau is a first overall pick in the lunatic draft. Some of my friends can’t see articles I share cause Canada doesn’t allow certain things to be viewed.

He's arguing that bonuses should only be tax at 15% instead of more than double that (without looking I think the article said 37%) and that he shouldn't have to pay anything additional after the reassessment. I'm not sure that the location of his bank account is relevant here, but I'm no accountant so what the hell do I know.

In fairness, you can't expect people on this website not to be strongly predisposed to assuming most posts here are serious

I drive an Uber and am not an international tax attorney but here is an article that may simplify the reason why JTs bonuses are in question. He was a USA resident the year the first bonus was paid. Pretty interesting.

Cizikas is back tomorrow which sucks cause I like McLean. Gotta give Casey his job back but maybe McLean playing well will motivate him to work harder and not lose his spot

Bonuses are taxed initially at 15% here in the US. However when you prepare your tax return you must pay the tax % your bracket dictates. It gets cloudy when your country of residency and country of compensation are different.

Yeah I’m not a CPA myself, but I think his claim is that the year he signed with Toronto he was still a resident of New York, in July whatever, and therefor that end of year tax (which included his first signing bonus etc) should be taxed at the New York rate. I don’t know the answer, but I’m glad to see Tavares turning into the mush from goodfellas both on and off the ice.

I don’t think it’s about the tax bracket. I think where the waters get muddied is his receiving that first bonus while still being a New York resident. His Toronto salary started in let’s say Sept or October, but his agent tried to be slick and have him only on the books for a million salary, and 90% in bonus monies. I don’t know the answer but Canada is backwards so he’s in for one..

He’s gonna have to when his contract is up. He’ll sign in florida, San Jose, Dallas etc to make that tax money back (if he loses)

Yes agree, It’s about what country he’s a resident of and what country the company who paid him the funds is from 100%. Signing bonus was paid on the date he signed and his residence was in the USA then.
You and I being US residents can receive a bonus and it can be initially taxed at 15%. However if our tax bracket is higher then you have to pay the additional tax on said bonus. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I think the tax savings was part of his taking this deal. That’s a lot of $$$$$$

I don't know either. I am curious how long this has been going on. We're talking about his 2018 return.
