For what it's worth... I doubt that Korpisalo is any worse than Husso in Detroit. Lyon has taken over as the starter for the Wings. Things have been much better since. Our clueless coach didn't get the memo until Husso was injured and Lyon finally was given the opportunity he needed and deserved. Hopefully he has a good night.

Wings will have their hands full with Ottawa who always play them tough it seems. Wings gotta stick to their new defensive man-to-man coverage to win tonight and keep their emotions in check. Should be a fun game tonight. Looking forward to it.

Sens played a solid road game. Detroit has been solid over the last few weeks.

Chabot had his best game this year.

I'd rather have Elias Linholm over Josh Norris. Norris is young and amazing - and I could be really wrong in about 1-2 years - but his health concerns me big time! He gets knocked off the puck too easily and IMO it's because of his shoulder

I kind of laugh a bit when I see comments (and not the first time) like we need a stay at home d-man like Chris Phillips. There was a time when Sens fans were trying to run him out of town as well. Not enough bite in his game .... too soft .... needs to be more physical, can't score ....yada yada yada. Many fans have myopic feelings. The past gets more and more perfect and we forget the blemishes.
I also read more issues with the fact that Martin didn't make in game changes . That isn't the answer either. Ottawa has a real issue with shutting down momentum shifts/changes. They do not know how to cope with this change. Martin needs to stay on point and have the Senators double down and play their game, tighten up defensively. Stop reverting to the past mistakes and bad habits. My only issue in this is why most coaches in the NHL refuse to use their time outs to deal with momentum shifts. In fact, most coaches do not even use their timeouts. Why? What are they saving them for? I know they are only allowed 1 timeout per game, but coaches seem reticent to use them. In the Rangers game, by Martin saving that timeout for some mystery point in the future becomes useless as the game's momentum steals the game away from them. Essentially a 3rd period use of the timeout became to little too late.

What is the real answer needed for the Senators? They need a bonafide #1 goalie. Period. A right d-man, strength down the middle in centres ... blah blah. Lack of proper goaltending kills a team.
Vancouver ... Demko, Winnipeg .... Hellybuyck, Colorado ... Georgiev, Dallas .... Oettinger, Vegas .... Hill , Edmonton .... Skinner, Tampa .... Vasilevskiy, Florida .... Bobrovsky, NYR ... Sheshterkin, Boston .... Swayman/Ullmark. The point being, that every Cup contender has a proper and reliable goalie. Ottawa needs to attain one asap if they wish to contend. Defence can wait .... and maybe the coaches can can change this team's defensive structure.

So I come back to it. Nashville is in town. Go get Askarov or Saros (probably Askarov) .... bye bye Norris. Whatever it takes, Ottawa needs to investigate. Poor goaltending just deflates what little energy this team can muster. Time to break up the clubhouse a bit.

Yeah I guess those same fans who wanted him out would have to respect a guy who played 1100+ games and had his number retired, so not sure I agree with them on him being a problem - a legend is what I would call him. I recall during 2000-2010 he was a beast and if we could clone him it would be good. Another player I wish we could clone and not to have traded away is Zheno Chara. Maybe Kleven or if we draft first round this year Mews, or one of the Russian defensemen in this years draft we might have the player we want to fill the gap. Trading Chychrun as some have suggested would be a bad move, he is going well. On the goaltender, it seems Korpi is going better so hopefully we see if he has the goods instead of old mate Dorian trading away Gus too early and we regret it again - he did well last 2 games. Saros or Askarov would be great but Trotz won't trade them. On Norris, yes some fans on here have given up on him but google Benji Marshall who is an ex-rugby league player in a full contact sport and Dan Carter the ex-rugby star who both had serious shoulder injuries and see what they did to recover and not only rehabbed well but became a legend in their sport which is not unlike hockey with its high contact. I see some posts on some bad drafts but 2005 when we picked 9th and Kopitar went 11th (not to mention 12, 21, 24, 33, 41, 44, 62, 72, 85, and 105), that might have been the start of it. I guess we all look back and some work and some don't - we passed over Alfie in '94 5 times when in hindsight he likely would have gone first. Looking to the future and a few more key players and we are set to be a regular play-off team and hopefully a cup.

Sens are 6-2-2 in last 10 games taking points (14 of 20) at a .700 pace. Playing the final 35 games at the same winning rate they would end the season with 91 points and likely miss the playoffs by about 3 points (or more).

I don't care about making playoffs. But, I do want the team to be relevant during the final month.

Brady played a monster game last night. He is a strong asset and a much better asset when he is on the ice. I want him to stop fighting...completely.

Tarasenko has gotten stronger every month since the season started. He is very good playing with the young guys. Nice if the Sens can keep him.

That was a very sound road game. They played a solid 1st period despite giving up the lead, stayed calm and got the lead back in the 2nd period, gave up the lead in the 3rd but held on for OT to make sure they at least came out of the game with a point, and then held possession for the entire OT and earned the extra point. Interesting that Korpisalo looked just fine once again when the team puts in a decent 60-min/200-foot effort. The fact they managed to do it without their #1D only reinforces the fact that the main problem isn't talent, it's strategy, details, and game management. They're now 6-2-2 with losses to only COL/NYR in that span, which is effectively a playoff pace. They're unlikely to maintain this pace for the rest of the season due to having so few home games remaining, but it's at least a taste of the level they need to achieve in order to take the next step.

Whelp... not happy about the loss but I knew it would be a tough game. Sens seem to bring their best game against Detroit. We'll take the point though to at least keep us in the wildcard spot. Hoping the Wings go on another hot streak after the all star break and leapfrog Toronto and Tampa (Wings beat those teams more than Ottawa for some reason). Cheers !

My preference is to keep Chycrun over Chabot. Better shot, better defense, younger and more physical. Likely a better AAV into the future as well. I'm not sure that Chabot has the instincts to play defensively at a high level which is a real concern for when we make the playoffs.
Replace Chabot with a solid defenceman who can calm things down in the D zone and we have 2 excellent pairings. This should also be the last year for Brannstrom. It's time for more more size and snarl from the D core.

Fair analysis although I like Chychrun under 6m otherwise he's not worth it. Health but also his defensive awareness and brain scare me.

I think the way this team leans more on Chabot then Chychrun in many key situations, that it is Chabot that the coaches prefer.

Who would you rather trade for?

Pierre Luc-Dubois - 6.8m
20% salary retained

Jonathan Huberdeau - 7.35m
30% salary retained

Yes, Chychrun is younger and amazing cap hit - which is why the return can be much more

I'm starting to believe we over rated both Chabbot and Chychrun.

Chychrun is playing like a guy who doesn't want to get hurt BEFORE his next contract.

Neither.

I'd rather use their salaries to get two of Matt Roy, Chris Taney or Dylan DeMelo.

I'd rather us their capital cost to get the young RD from Columbus.

I like PLD.

I understand he has been a lot of promise without full delivery. But, many insiders still think there is a huge game inside this player. This supposed game has not fully emerged as of yet. He should give you 25 goals a year and, more important, he can shut down the other teams best centre.

Going to LA was a mistake for him and for the Kings. He came into a roster that already has two top shut down centres. It has been a really bad fit.

I believe LA will trade PLD. And, I believe he will realize the potential that so many insiders believe is inside him.

I also know I could be entirely wrong.

Canadiens trade Monaghan to Winnipeg for a 1st.

I wonder, does this open the door for them to do the deal with LA for PLD?

Montreal really made out well with that trade. Two first round picks to get Monohan to play on their team for a year +. Good stuff.

There are legitimate concerns with both, including health and defensive awareness. People seem to viscerally like that Chychrun has a bigger/stronger frame, but I'm not sure its translated into him being any more physical or defensively capable. Chabot has better Corsi/Fenwick numbers (similar to Zub), more blocked shots/GP, slightly fewer hits/GP but also fewer PIM/GP, and he's far better at actually carrying the puck in transition. I'm also not sure about Chychrun's decision making with the puck, as he's not only frequently involved with d-zone turnovers, but he also leads the team in Giveaways/60min. Then again, Chychrun is being asked to play on his wrong side most of the time, which I'm sure has affected his performance. But it really feels like they're trying to play the same role too often, and it's typically better to have balance in your D-pairings in terms of one player being more defensively aware and capable.

All due respect Spatso, but I havent heard any insider or hockey mind from anywhere say anything good about PLD at all, so I dont know which insiders have been saying he has this magical untapped potential. There has been a buyer beware tag on him since before the trade to the kings. He reminds me of some of the Russian born players from the 90's, all the talent in the world, but only puts in the effort when they feel like it. I'd stay a whole continent away from him. The only insider talk about him is the usual "he wants to play for the habs" rhetoric, which even then I dont believe it would make a difference.
