Its going to take a while for Martin to override the years of bad habits and coaching by Smith, he wont fix this in a 1-2 games, it might take the rest of the season to de-program the players from smiths bad coaching.

I hope it doesn't take a half season, but I certainly wasn't expecting anything in the first 5 games. Wish we had a long break where practice/drills could be put to good use.

At least they’ve gone from second period meltdowns to third period. That’s progress I guess.

Crazy how excited this fanbase was to start the year, only to have it dashed by Christmas. I guess I agree that they should sell off expiring contracts that aren’t coming back, but don’t tank. This team needs to play it out this year, learn some better habits and hit the ground running with a new coach/gm next year.

Don’t forget to tell the ‘kids’ how special they are though.

What a fantastic team Colorado is and Mackinnon...dear god. He's rebuilt Jonathan Druin back in to a hockey player.

While we didn't play horrible....Korpisalo had to stand on his head at times. It's like teams smell blood in our end...it's just calamitous craziness.

I didn't watch the third I knew what would happen.

We may have lost 5 road games in a row in regulation time but having Jacques Martin as coach is definitely worth the pain. You can see a number of positive changes already such as shorter shift lengths, better line changes and more aggressive defense all over the ice. Not losing the games in the second period is a win. Still lots of work to do - bad penalties in the offensive zone being the next obvious thing to be improved.

I do not expect this team to make the playoffs this year. I do want to see huge strides in player development from the current team. I'm expecting Staios and management to do a much better job in talent evaluation and roster construction. I'm finally feeling optimistic about the future of this team again.

Dorion should be hired again by the Sens just to be immediately fired for letting Nick Paul go over a reasonable money ask. Everything I see him play in TB, I yell Dorions name at the TV.

Joseph 49 pts in 92 games, .53 PPG, +25 with Ottawa.
Paul 65 pts in 135 games, .48PPG, +3 with Tampa.

That trade was a complete wash - both players got statistically better after the move, Joseph has been hurt more but is younger and on a better value contract. Both have become defensive cornerstones for their respective teams. Hindsight is 20/20, but the results on paper are hardly so bad as to warrant a vendetta against Dorion. Plus we still have a fourth round pick to spend.

They actually played pretty well for the most part, but the PK really really needs work. Also, it was a catastrophic decision to challenge the 2nd goal in the 3rd period. You're playing on the road in COL, you're already dealing with a pretty fragile group, the Avalanche have just tied the game at 4-4 on their 3rd PP goal of the night, and you risk giving them another PP on a 50/50 offside call? At some point this team needs to start playing more strategically, where everyone from the coach down to the back-up goaltender understand that salvaging a point from a difficult road game is more than acceptable.

I think you need some more high end skill.
We need a defenseman badly.
Nylander ( signed and traded) for Sanderson, get it done.

Nylander will want 10M+. No thanks. We don't need to get into cap hell.

Sens will come back but this is NOT their time. Being regular season winners is not in the cards for Ottawa. They need to add to their depth (Ridly Grieg, Shane Pinto, Mathieu Joseph need to be in bottom 6 with some others) and have a healthy year of Norris and Chabot (these 2 HAVE to get back to what they were before and then the high end skill is more than enough.

I might be compelled to consider Chabot for Nylander. Sanderson, no chance. But we should stay away from the Leafs - dipping into that well has led to nothing but suffering for this team. It's why I hope John Gruden isn't our eventual head coach.

Those guys are good players but not truly high end skill guys.
Nylander actually has more talent than Matthews and Marner, his issue has been consistency.
He would be your best player immediately .
Having said that I know you wouldn't trade Sanderson for him, just trying to get a reaction.

Never going to happen. Nylander for Chychrun might wok if you could figure out the $6m in extra cap wanted by Nylander.

Chycrun is not going to get it done.
Has to be one of Tkachuk, Stutzle or Sanderson for it to make sense from the Leafs standpoint.
Nylander has more points than anyone on Ottawa and it's not close.
Obviously with your record something has to change besides the coach.
Or you can muddle along hoping this is the year the team turns the corner...

Make it Chychrun and a 2025 second rounder for Nylander and it's a done deal.

Stu and Sanderson alone have more value than nylander, wingers are worst the second least, after G, C and D are worth the most, Nylanders value drops do to being a UFA and will be wanting 10M+, both Stu and Sanderson are signed long tern at 8M which increases their value substantially.

Brady also has more value than Nylander do to his cap hit and having 4 more years under contract.

Tor does not need another 10M+ player, they need cap space to fill out the roster, just like EDM.

last year was the first time in 17 years of cap era that a team won a cup with a player making more than 9.5M on the team (eichel at 10M).

TOR is in a position of weakness when trading Nylander because he is a pending UFA

Good comments and I agree with most of what you said.
In my original post I made the comment that it would be a sign and trade to enhance Nylanders value.

I really like Nylander. But, he is not a fit in Ottawa at $10.5m. The Leafs should be able to resign him and continue their practice of paying their big 4 forwards the equivalent (or more) than what many teams pay their top 6 forwards. It is a good formula for the regular season. But it leaves the Leafs vulnerable in the playoffs.

Leafs cap problems should be resolved in a few years when the Tavares contract has been completed.

Overall I thought it was a good game. Slowly, ever so slowly adding some structure to their game. Not many 4 bell alarms in their own end. Still hard to protect a lead, but they are young and still learning how to protect a lead. Jacque's methods will still take time. The good news is that I think the team/and the fans know the season is over as far as playoffs are concerned. As Ferarro mentioned, it is now about evaluating all the players and deciding who stays and who goes. At least we have around 50 games left to develop better habits and get ready for next season.

Jake Sanderson
Ridly Greig

Roby Järventie
Tyler Kleven
Yegor Sokolov

Leevi Meriläinen

Eric Engstrand

Philippe Daoust
Cole Reinhardt

2020 will go down as a very good draft for Ottawa. Only Eric Engstrand is no longer in the system. All the players are either in Ottawa or Belleville. I think there is a reasonable possibility that 3 or 4 will play in Ottawa (Kleven, Merilainen, Jarventie, Reinhardt), and 4 or 5 will eventually make the NHL. Sokolov and Daoust may make decent pieces to help finish off a trade to bring in a player we need.

Consistency is a very important skill. I'm also shocked that you said Nylander is more talented than Matthews or Marner.

With respect, I would not trade the following for Nylander 1 for 1: Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Jake Sanderson.

He is have an amazing year - which I'm not surprised given contract year

Can't imagine many Sens fans would disagree with your call.

Who would you trade Brady for in a fair one for one deal where as a Sen's fan you would be satisfied.....Barkov?
