Missed calls and bad calls even out over the course of the season, who knew? - paulr
You could locate my history of posting on the internets and you won't find me sniveling about officials, ever. One reason is as you posted, bad calls even out over a yr........ But I do think that hook called on Vlasic was at best borderline.
Big kid reached in front of Terry at 20 MPH and had stick on stick/puck and didn't hold/hook doing so. .... IMO bad call but lo and behold it got evened out by a couple no calls in the very same game.
Vlasic's crazy reach/skating allows him to cleanly execute a stick on stick/puck from behind. |

I'd prefer for the Hawks to re-sign JD, I think he brings a lot to the team and would provide tremendous value for the next 2-3 years.
However, if some team offers KD a Hagel-type return for JD (which is unlikely) then he should jump all over that. - DarthKane
Agreed, i think he should be signed as well. Slight raise to say 3.25 for 3 years? |

I use to love Alberta coaches coming into Saskatchewan and always whining that we were using a different Rule book. Umm its Hockey Canada LOL, i know Saskatchewan is number one for Ref's but we don't make up our own rules. |

Or one team having 3 penalties in a row called on them, guess who gets the next one?
Or how refs call penalties sometimes phantom to manage the game?
And I only reffed kids games, so no pressure except to call them as I saw them. |

Being out of the Chicago market, I mostly have the choice of listening to the Hawks or the other teams broadcasts. Lately, I always opt for the opposing teams, I actually learn more about the Hawks from the research done by the oppo.s announcers than Voisters, and Pang.
For instance the Ducks said Luke told them they want Bedard to move his feet more, and KK to move his feet less (be more "quiet"). Never have gotten that from the Blackhawks broadcast team.
In the Detroit game, Mickey Redmond was head over heels about Bedard, and korchinski, and explained little nuances as to why. Again never got that info. from the Hawks broadcasters, besides learning about the team the Hawks are playing. - LAHawk
Yep, and it's beyond a fukin shame and if I allow it it will consume me. Like a player IMO an announcer must respect the game and in the booth you do that by being prepared. ......... The Hawk booth is beyond horrendous and I've lost gobs of respect for Cailey listening to the NSH game. She has become a full fledged homer and does not know who the opponents players are!!!
Guess I'm in the minority but I dig the ANA booth. The PBP guy knows more about the Hawks than me........ Indeed, said KD wants Bedard to move his feet. Translate that. It means skate punk, win a puck, stop having plays end on your stick over and over and over and over and over.
And you forgot to mention Redmond saying 1:30 shifts by Bedard is SELFISH (same thing I posted in Game 3). Went on to say you do that on ANY Perron team and he's in your face. Respect the mother humpin sport, man, not to mention your teammates, your squirt coach and your daddy.
Same thing on this site. I have never ever ever seen an NHL player skate into 3-4 players over and over and over, cough over and over and over, have plays end on their stick over and over (5-6-9 times EVERY game) and it NEVER gets mentioned!!!

Just got back from the UC. My notes from the 300-level:
- 1 SOG in the third period encapsulated just how poorly we played offensively
- So much standing around on offense. We really struggled with generating any kinds of scoring chances
- Mrazek was terrific but he probably looked better on TV than he did in-person. The Hawks were fantastic at limiting quality opportunities for the Ducks and Mrazek didn't cough up any rebounds
- Not sure what role Seth Jones serves moving forward. He's obviously locked up long-term, but he's not a top pairing defense-man and he's not a bottom-pairing one either. He's kinda just "there". Passes weren't crisp as he missed some outlet passes, didn't carry the puck out of the d-zone much, wasn't really vocal either from the looks of it either
- Korchinski and Jones have no chemistry whatsoever. That pairing needs to be split up yesterday
- Everyone looks to get Bedard the puck on the offensive end. Understandable, but scary to put that much on the plate of an 18 year old. BADLY need an influx of veteran offensive talent, can't just let kids ascend and hope
- Murphy... yikes.. Maybe it's LR's system, but he did not look this bad under Colliton. He's clearly a leader in the locker-room, but he's playing like a #5/#6 defense-man and is still under term for a couple more seasons. At least we need a cap floor to hit
- Crevier and Vlasic were fun together... let's see if that can stick. That has the potential to be an unreal shut-down pairing. It felt quiet when they were on the ice - a good thing
- Reichel needs to be sent back down to Rockford. I genuinely am unsure if he even touched the puck tonight. Box score says he had a SOG but think it was probably a tip off his stick - TommyHawk
Thanks for sharing, TH....... I'd be interested in what you saw skating wise, did anything jump out. How did Crevier look in open ice? Short area quickness? How explosive are Reichel's feet? How damn fast is Vlasic? ...... Why would you say Mrazak was lucky? The man's reads/tracking is elite right now and has been for all but maybe 2 games.
How far off am I when I saw Mintekov was the most dangerous player on the ice? .... For fun, do you draft Mintekov, he went a few picks after KK, ahead of KK if you had a redo?

I'll listen to opposing broadcasters a lot also. Vosters is awful, and has not gotten any better. He does not really know the game. Besides he can barely utter anything other than the player names that the spotter is saying into his earpiece. Everything is forced or manufactured. |

You'd love the Edmonton Oiler radio and TV broadcast teams. No pretty faces there -just hard core hockey guys. And when things aren't going good, nobody is spared from getting their mistakes made known. |

Agree 100%, sign D!ckinson to a three year contract and bye bye Mrazek. I also agree with some of the others that KD needs to take back some prospects in any trades, either forward(s) or RD’s. - Angotti
Would probably end up taking a goalie back in any Mrazek deal.

Been hearing that for how many trade deadlines now? In the past 7 years, only 2 goalies have brought back a #1 (both offseason trades), Keumper in 2021 and Anderson in 2016.
How much do you think you are going to get for (as you say) an oft injured goalie whho is a pending UFA? - LAHawk

Very aware of the EDM booth. Any time I watch the Oilers I choose the EDM feed. And yea, both the PBP and color guy are objective, no hot takes and besides knowing the sport and both teams understand they are not the story of the game.
IMO the best PBP guy is Gord Miller (love when he's paired with Ferraro for jrs games) whether it be a big league game or jrs. Miller is especially good with international jrs games. Knows every player, the coaches, their national system and their history. ....... I think Miller just loves the sport and would work for peanuts.... Ever see him in real life? Big dude, might be 6ft 5ish.

Just curious
Edmonton announcers are hard core hockey guys who call the action as it happens without apology.
Which includes laying blame on a player for a mistake or getting beat etc al. So if the team defense plus the dmen as a group suck (not Eckholm though), they have been crying about this for years. Apparently the GM (plural as in GM’s?) don’t care or feel any pressure about the team make up and failure to advance despite having two of the absolute best forwards in the league.
I’m sure much the same story in Toronto
We were on a slippery slope and falling closer to the edge each season after our last Cup when Bowman was the GM
So we are in a rebuild
Who is free falling most
You could think of the song “Free Fallin”
By Tom Petty right now BTW
Again
Who is free falling in the NHL right now
Maybe Edmonton, Toronto treading water, Penguins free falling |

Did you know that Jack Michaels the Oilers TV PBP guy came to them directly from the radio and TV booth of the Alaska Aces of the ECHL. Love the guy.
Agree with you on Gord Miller who is probably the most well rounded hockey announcer currently around based on knowing the game, being up to date on all of the players in that particular game or tournament. And his ability with phonetics is awesome - very few announcers in any sport would be able to do what Miller does with Czech, Slovak, Finnish, Russian and Swedish names without a hiccup.
The only criticism of Miller I have is his voice inflection points when he is doing a Leaf game, especially a home game. I just want the Leafs to lose every game until the end of time and it seems to me Miller turns into their home broadcaster when doing their games. That isn't pleasant for me. |

I don't think the Oilers are in a free fall. EDM has won 5 in a row and has allowed 8 goals in those 5 games. Not saying they have resolved their goalie and defense deficiencies, nor are they Cup contenders, but with that firepower they can make a run for the playoffs.
TOR much the same way. They can outgun a lot of teams and make the playoffs, but as we know, defense wins championships. Leafs will continue to make the playoffs with all that talent up front. I can see Treliving using the cap increase next year to sign Nylander to 10M+. He'll have to be creative to improve his defense.
Agree with the Pens going down hill. One of the oldest, if not the oldest team in the league. Little talent in the pipeline. Old core still trying to make a playoff run, but we've seen that act right here before.
Islanders are another old team with a poor prospect pool. They'll be headed south soon.
Calgary's pending free agents don't want to re-sign, but they're hanging around a playoff spot. Interesting situation up there come TDL. Will they tear it all down and be sellers or keep everyone to make a playoff run and try to extend them? Huberdeau also a big flop after signing that huge extension. That has to be one of the worst contracts in the league as of now.
Capitals are another aging team going down hill. Ovi is 38 and looks as if he is slowing down with only 5 goals 1/4 way thought the season. Carlson is 33, Oshie is 36 and Backstrom is finished. But they have Dylan Strome signed for four more years. |

I doubt Nylander will agree to a dime less than what Marner is making now. And that would bring their payroll cost for 4 forwards to $45M, more than half the cap. Top heavy, never gonna win that way. |

How do you think that Nylander situation will turn out? Unless the Leafs collapse and fall out of the playoff race, I can't see Nylander being traded at the TDL. So he either then walks, signs for big bucks, or gets traded right after the season.
Treliving won't let him walk for nothing. Similar situation when he traded Tkachuk in the off season before he became a free agent. I can see that happening with Nylander. Leafs can get a haul for him. I wonder if Dubas wants him in PIT.

I think the Leafs have to suck it up and move Nylander for defensive and goaltending help. As Rick said they aren’t going to win anything if they sign him. |

I don't know how the Nylander situation plays out. What I do know is how the Leafs situation will play out - they will crash and burn in April like they do every year.
And don't know what power Treliving has in this - choices: 1) give him the contract he wants; 2) let him walk as a UFA or 3) do some kind of sign and trade in cahoots with another team, But who? Maybe San Jose for Tomas Hertl - the Loafs could probabny stomach that deal.
If I'm a GM I don't give any winger $11M for 8 years. That salary goes to a big #1 center or defenceman. |

I am really glad you posted this - this is something that someone here who has the Athletic asks one if those guys to ask the organization to make it known...also go to our "insider Charlie Romuletis on NBC sports Chicago and telll him ask guis bosses, why? Why they didn't tell him all dat.
(ACTUALLY THOSE OUT OF TOWN NEWSCASTER PROBABLY HAD ACCESS TO THE PLAYERS AND ASKED THEM AND THEY TOLD THEM WHAT THE STAFF WAS ASKING...)
That is why I mute the local...The one that works for NBCSports directly PAT BOYLE (w/o organization ties, oh unless the fact that thew Wirtz Corp owns 25% of NBCSportsChicago)...when he started a few season back continuing to mention the Hawks future #1 goalie, Drew Commesso, well, if you are gonna hype, start with a guy a bit closer to being a solid NHLer in the system already!
Maybe the true lack of that not yet showing in Reichel he had to pin the futures hope on poor unsuspecting Commesso!
Connor Bedard seems to have filed their gullets and the successes we keep seeing in the improving call ups. |

I listened to that 2nd period and it was nuts. I came away from listening to the Detroit radio feed with much respect for those two guys. Gave credit where credit was due to both sides without being homers. And no extra build up of the home team players as well. Matter of fact description of the game. Then I get home and turn on the Hawks telecast. What a difference. Vosters and Caley Chelios have their heads so far up the ass of management it's not funny.
Wideman and Murry on the Hawks radio cast do a good job as well. - 6628
And now it's becoming clear why Olczyk is no longer here.
