I went to the Christmas Market in Landsdown ..... nobody has any defensive structure for sale there either.

Hi Alex, I'd like to buy a save by Forsberg for $100.

At this point, Ottawa's 2nd period failures are inexcusable. What the the heck is going on with the Senators and the 2nd period. Its embarrassing. I know the players profess their love of DJ, but if they can't give an honest 60 minute effort to save his job, then it is time to go.

Pretty much had enough of Forsberg at this point. A sub 0.800 SV% is just not good enough for a supposed pro. Time to send Forsberg to Belleville. Nobody is going to take him and his $2.75 million contract (with 1 more year). Obviously we can't do this until Korpisalo is healthy. But Forsberg shouldn't see the net again. Give Sogaard the next game.

This is so frustrating ... sure the Sens players talk about bad bounces etc, but it is the same old story. They are playing the same old style, the same way. There is no teaching or improvement on the defensive side here. Obviously the coaching staff just can't do it so it is time to make changes.
Go listen to DJ Smith interview after the game ... he just says the same thing over and over. He has no answers.

You are not going to win many games in the NHL when you give up 5 goals on 25 shots.

DJ Smith record after 16 games (about 20% of season)

2017-2018: 8-8-0
2018-2019: 8-8-0
2019-2020: 6-10-0
2020-2021: 3-13-1
2021-2022: 4-11-1
2022-2023: 8-8-0

Up until this season, the team was only have worse starts. Why tf do we have this guy still as a coach?

NYI, with only 4D left for 2 periods manages to outplay and beat the sens rofl.

the First sentense of Sportsnet article on the sens game vs NYI is all telling

"OTTAWA -- The New York Islanders played 57 minutes of Friday night’s game with four defencemen and the Ottawa Senators still couldn’t beat them."

the NYI D on the point have so much time and space to move around it is truly amazing, OTT whole D system is let the other team shoot, hope they don't score, hope they can get possession of the puck and hope they can break out of the zone.

The offside challenge is stupid as is. Last night, it was a long delay not sure exactly how much between zone entry and the goal.

Its like living in dream world, where nothing is real. That amount of time is the nhl saying it was all a dream, it never happened

At the very least they should reset the clock or put a time limit on it.

Offside chalkenges are common place during the regular season. I challenge anyone to show just 1 from the playoffs.... why is that?

As for the offside .... the refs eventually got it correct. We may not like it but it was the correct call and overall that is all we want to see, the correct call being made. My issue was for the 2nd or 3rd time in that game, Tkachuk puts his own players offside by trying to move east-west instead of north-south and just gaining the line. This team does not pay attention to the little details. The game plan by the coaching staff should have been changed due 4 d-men on the Islanders side. But DJ Smith again seemingly shows no ability to make in-game alterations. It is just so frustrating to see this team play the same way in most games.
I was not necessarily a big fan for coaching change yet, but this team shows no signs of change. My assumption is that we will probably lose to a better team in Florida .... fall further behind in the playoff race, and again, have a losing record in the months of Oct/Nov.
It is time to make a change and bring in a more structured coaching staff to rattle this team. The buddy/pal style of DJ Smith is not working. The team is not playing to help this staff keep their jobs.

Here is an idea. Both teams need a fundamental shake-up.
Ottawa trades:
Norris $7.95 million
Chabot $8 million
Brannstrom $2 million
Forsberg $2.75 million
Kubalik $2.5 million
Mandolese, AHL goalie, not against cap
Lassi Thomson, AHL, not against cap
Sokolov, AHL not against cap
Total out = 23.2 million

Edmonton trades:
Draisaitl $8.5 million (only if he re-signs)
Bouchard $3.9 million, still RFA status
Campbell $3.85 million … goes to AHL to play
Jannmark $1 million , UFA at end of season
Foegele $2.75 million, UFA after season
2nd round pick
Total Out is $20 million

You toss in a 3rd team to eat a bit from Sens and Edmonton.

Thank you for the names you put in there because I agree (hard because Chabot and Norris are both excellent mid 1st round picks but health + other factors are making it seem like a better option to trade - if the VALUE is there). Kubalik and Brannstrom are just taking up cap space

The Islanders game was an opportunity missed. It was a very frustrating game to watch. The team just folded once the offside goal was overturned. This is a fragile team. If they don’t put together a really good run in December, this season might be lost, yet again.

Issues are not all DJ Smith, but coaching doesn’t seem to be doing them any favours either. I have never seen a team make so little in-game adjustments. I know I am a broken record with saying DJ needs to go but something needs to give. The losing culture is setting if (if not here already). A good chunk of these guys are signed to significant and long term contracts. This is more or less the team you have to go forward with and the window to win is usually very small in today’s cap world.

Hopefully Korposalo gets healthy soon. Forsberg is simply not a solution for a starter’s role or even 1A role. Two knee injuries for a goalie likely has hurt him. His salary could be used elsewhere with a cheaper backup option. The Dorion goalie graveyard might get another body soon.

Folks know that I am firmly on the trade Chabot train. While Chychrun hasn’t had a consistently great year, I’d prefer him over Chabot and then you have Sanderson who will be leaps and bounds better than both assuming his development continues to trend upwards. Sens have holes with forward depth and right defense. Moving Chabot could potentially address both issues.

I am also becoming increasingly worried about the Norris contract. He isn’t shooting well (or at all) or creating offense. While he had the injury and layoff, I am not sure he is an 8-million-dollar player. He would be a harder player to trade.

I like seeing you use these guys as a centerpiece in a trade.

A teams like Edmonton, Minny, Columbus, and maybe Calgary all have good pieces but have had bad starts. You might be able to massage a good-old-fashioned “hockey trade”. It’s a farfetched idea since GMs seem to be afraid to do these types of trades now but one of these teams will likely reach a breaking point at some juncture.

Let’s face it, the Sens love to be in the news, whether it’s good or bad. Perhaps we are in for something come December whether it be a trade, coaching change, new GM, etc.

UNCLE !!!! UNCLE!!!!! Tapping out. That was pathetic.

I would love to hear DJ Smith at the podium explaining the lack of any effort in this game. Hard to fault Korpisalo on this. He faced 38 shots, but 3 of the goals were powerplay goals. That is tough on a goalie.
But Ottawa only has 21 shots on goal ... 5, 8, and 8. Not exactly a "desperate" team.

Its odd that we haven't seen or heard a DJ Smith postgame wrap on this game. Ohhhhhh, a guy can only hope. Don't tease us. Please make this be the night.

That was probably the most disjointed game I have ever attended in my life.

Every single thing they did was poorly executed. Be it shots, passes, or skating behind their own net. It got to the point where we were just laughing rather than getting frustrated.

Even for this team, it was bad. That offisde was a weird one, but the team wasn't winning anyway with that level of play.

At least I got to see the ref say every player gets a 10 minute misconduct though, that was something.

You read headlines of 160+ penalty minutes. Then you see the score. Man... Bad optics. Sloppy, careless play. If you really love your coach, you might think you would play to win for him.

Woodcroft: 79-41-13 = Fired

Evason: 147-77-27 = Fired

DJ Smith: 128-147-32 = still got a job

I understand that Andlauer and Staios want to take their time, to assess this team before making more changes ..... like hiring a GM, and then a new coaching staff.

But they better be careful. If they lose the fans then this gets messy in a hurry. I for one will not be spending my hard earned cash on tickets for this mess.

Too funny. Sens started out game trying to play highly structured, disciplined game. Clearly they are spooked by the negative vibes around the team. They were not very good. They gave up on puck possession as an option and became a pop gun offence. Florida dominated every shift.

I don't think they have many options left and will consider replacing DJ before next game. Moving DJ is inevitable. Natural progression after Dorion was replaced. But, I do not believe they wanted to make this change before bringing in a new GM.

New ownership group never wanted to be put in the position of replacing Dorion/Smith and being caught going backwards in terms of on ice performance. Hate when this happens. Do not want to hear discussions of needing rebuild.

I think that was one of the most embarrassing games I have seen the Sens play in recent years. I honestly don’t know how you don’t fire DJ. This team plays like a beer league hockey team that comes together once a week. There is no structure, no cohesion, no responsibilities, and no emotion. The losing culture has set in, and you are seriously risking ruining the young players development.

The players can “like” DJ all they want but when you are at the bottom of the standing you aren’t doing him or yourself any favours. This team needs a teacher and someone who will force the guys to grow and reach the next step in their development.

Yes, you need a new GM to hire “his guy” but that doesn’t mean you can’t fire DJ and have an interim guy take over. Hell, put Alfie back there for a month until you get a GM. I honestly will start questioning the new ownership and Staios if DJ is not relieved of his duties in the next couple of weeks.

The players also deserve a lot of flak. While it was nice to see some emotion in the 3rd, those were some of the most forced and awkward scrums I have seen in some time. It’s like they knew they were not showing emotion and tried to fake it. It was like watching a bunch of 12-year-olds being disinterested but still going to Disneyland. These guys simply do not know how to win and do not seem interested in learning how.

Some of the best teachers’ kids have in life are people that they didn’t like but respected and who pushed them to be better. Kids “favorite” teachers are usually their favorite because they can get away with more and coast through the class. DJ is the favorite teacher that is not going to help the kids tuns into men.

I'm barely holding on to a sliver of hope with this team.
The Sens have many games in hand and could be in a playoff spot by the time they catch up.
But.. there is not a shred of evidence they are capable of doing that. Even their few wins ' recently ' were unconvincing and just got lucky.

DJ did take blame afterwards but i suspect he just watched paul maurice press after their winnipeg game taking the blame . He thought to himself oh..this is what a good coach does .

Even korpisalo was yelling at the defence last night.. that was as astonishing as the boat of misconducts.

This is a max cap team.. unbelievable dorion was a incompetent joke.

I dont know what or even if theres an answer. But a big change wont hurt.

They should start by replacing all/some of the assistant coaching staff. Today.
Then look at a ' bigger' trade, may have to eat some salary.
