donnie should be a better head coach at this point

I think he is holding the team down, not the team holding him down

I just dont see him make correct in game adjustments. Like ever.

The fact that this guy canโ€™t get this team motivated to play 2 high intensity games in a row is concerning.
His line tinkering is questionable. His over confidence in a terrible 4th line and his timing of using them is concerning.
His inability to solve the trap is concerning.

The Sabres are going to have to find ways for some of these kids to play, especially if they lock up Mitts. There are just to many and you can only let them bake for so long. Either you figure out a unconventional bottom 6, even L4 or you need to use some for other areas of need Top 3RD. I really don't see the problem with having a couple of these kids playing lower in the lineup and rolling 4 lines of Speed. Most of these kids coming up have better 200ft games than some on the roster right now.

Have to go with the assumption that they are extending Casey.

That gives you Tage, Cozens, Casey, Tuch, Skinner, Peterka, Quinn and Greenway for the next 1 to 2 seasons.

Add in Krebs, and that's 9 forwards.

The options seem clear:

- Continue to slow play as many of the prospects as possible, and wait another 2 seasons before bringing them up, perhaps when some of Greenway, Skinner and Tuch age out

- Bring up the prospects, starting next season, and roll with a somewhat unconventional 4 line approach, as you said

- Trade one or two of the prospects to bolster immediate needs (top 2 pair defender, big, physical, talented forward)

I'm curious if they actually have a long term plan, or if it's a bit fly by the seat of their pants, only make moves when forced approach.

i'll argue that hes elevating everyone he plays with right now and might be able to
- robz228

Then there should be no hesitation to bring him back into the 3C role, I have no issue with it. The Sabres are .500 with swapping Mitts and Cozens. They were below .500 the other way around.

This situation will become frequent as there is a line a mile long of similar style players trying to find roles on the team.

The answer might be the following, at least for the near term, until Quinn returns and Kane is signed:

Greenway - Tage - Cozens
Skinner - Mittelstadt - Tuch

I agree with that top 6 for the now, but they are using Tage's wing as a placeholder for prospects to sniff the show. They still prioritize development over all.

This is nothing more than guessing, but maybe the reasoning behind putting players like Benson and Biro on Tage's wing is they are trying to leverage the brilliance of Tage to help the rookies acclimate and have their best chance of performing optimally, while being able to hopefully have some semblance of a decently performing 3rd line?

That would make it partially development and partially about getting another line going?

It's by design for sure and most likely a combination of that.

They had all summer to improve the depth and instead spent the time prioritizing what they already have, which is showing, again, that it's not enough.
