Obviously, Ottawa is at fault if they said one thing and another thing happened but isn’t there an element of buyer beware? What team just takes other team’s words for it?
- Gord_Wilson_2.0

Isn't this one of the reasons why players have expensive agents? To make sure all the paperwork is in order?

I think the paperwork was in order in this case, but there's some evidence either in a recorded call or in writing that indicates the Send told Vegas the paperwork wasn't submitted, or wasn't submitted on time, thereby voiding the NTC. You'd think the league would maintain a database of these things, and they do - the Sens just never filed it.

Saw an insightful comment from Bobbie Ryan. He reminds us that players quit on coaches when they lose the room. His point is DJ has the total support of the room. Folks calling for the removal of DJ may have no idea how knowledgable insiders understand the situation.
- spatso

If DJ was fired would any team in the league pick him up as HC ever again. Probably not. That alone is good enough indication to move on from the guy.

It's cool the players like him when when you watch the on ice performance it just isn't good enough and it has to be someone's fault right? The GM, out of what may even be sheer luck, has put together a great team on paper. If they aren't performing close to expectations seems like the coach needs to go.

There is more reasons to fire a coach than whether or not the players like him. The GM shouldnt even care who the players like.

I think that if there are going to be changes, Dorion would be fired first and the new GM allowed to pick his own coach. I don't think they fire DJ Smith and allow Dorion to hire the new coach.

I assumed and still do that new ownership will replace the GM at the appropriate time. So far the transition has been very good. But your GM is at the very heart of the enterprise and GMs get moved out or kicked upstairs or shuffled sideways when ownership changes in most businesses. Perhaps Staios has already begun making changes of a shuffling nature. Eventually, a new GM will emerge and will have a free hand in naming his own head coach.

My concern with the "fire DJ today" crowd is they have no belief that letting him go would produce any negative consequences over the balance of this season. I am just not sure that is true.

DJ talking about the Pinto fiasco gives you some insight into why the players hold him in such high regard.

We are about 10% complete the season. Another 19 games, we will about 1 third done. The Sens are 4-4-0, second last in the division and 13th in the conference. Simply unacceptable!!

On a positive: trade shane pinto ! We have Ridly Grieg who I think long term will have a much better career than Pinto and Pinto still has a lot of value. Maybe let him come back and play amazing, then trade him next year

- AlfieisKing

Why trade Pinto, a promising big center who won't cost much, especially after the gambling fiasco... if you want to trade someone, trade Kubalik!! he hasn't done anything, doesn't seem to gel with the team and has no "history" with the Sens so no one will be shedding tears to see him go...

Ugh. Sens forfeit first rounder in one of 24/25/26 (team's choice after draft order determined) for Dadonov debacle. A fireable offense IMO.

Correct. Just the existence of the clause is in the public domain. I feel Vegas needs to do conduct due diligence when it comes to trade negotiations. Obviously, Ottawa is at fault if they said one thing and another thing happened but isn’t there an element of buyer beware? What team just takes other team’s words for it?

I am likely missing a clause that all GMs and teams need to obey when it comes to trade negotiations so other GMs and teams can take their word for it, but I don’t have a ton of sympathy for Vegas in this situation.

Considering some of the pickles that have floated around the NHL the last couple of years (Hockey Canada situation, cap circumvention, Hawks assault case, etc), this seems like small potatoes, but it seems like the NHL is prepping for a punishment worth more than cases that should receive larger punishments.

- Gord_Wilson_2.0

Due diligence does not include checking if a party lying about pertinent facts. I came here to check out exactly what happened, seems a bit confused but the ruling seems to be Dorian lied and is paying the piper

Now we will wait and see what Andlauer and Staios will do. The evaluation of Dorion is not looking good so far IMO. Do they make the change now or at end of year .... or no change at all. My view is that if they will replace him, then I would prefer to do it know and not allow Dorion to make trades/changes to the team.

Maybe it is time to get different eyes and ears and ideas for the Senators.

Anybody seeing Dorion walk around with a cardboard box with a plant in it ?

His days are numbered. He wont survive this. He may last until the end of the season but unlikely. Depends how much more drama they think the team can handle at the moment . unbelievable.

I would hazard a guess. And think that vegas knowingly exploited this to their advantage at the time and now. Just another example of stronger management taking advantage of a weaker dorion.

Could you explain what you mean on the second paragraph? This really does mostly fall on the Sens, regardless how we feel about theh punishment.

Its just a guess..... But i would suspect that vegas knew it wasn't an updated list. And they proceeded with the transaction knowing that if the player didn't work out or intentionally went ahead with it knowing . They could circle back to the trade wich was non binding . And some form of compensation would have to be realized.

He means that Vegas.....checks capfriend....public domain....sees that Dadanov in fact HAS a no trade. They turn around and attempt trade him to a team on that list on purpose. "exploit".

additionally this isn't "sky is falling" bad.

In the next three years the Sens are predicted to make the play offs making that first round pick later and later. Ideally they make a run and make the play offs THIS year and then use the pick from Detroit (likely Boston's) to supplement this punishment.

I'm not Dorion's biggest fan but this seems like a silly decision. They must have proof he knew. Even still....eyeroll at the NHL.

They could possibly give them the boston pick ,that they are getting from detroit possibly next draft. Wich detroit likely will if boston continues on this trajectory.

Yes eye rolls all around. Vegas is the nhl's darling team and the epicenter of betting. Have to keep them happy at all costs

On paper, yes. But I'd feel more comfortable with this assertion if they looked poised to make theh playoffs this year, or were in a less competitive division.

Season's early, of course.

I think this really does represent an opportunity for the team to move forward in terms of their restructuring around new ownership. I would think that if Staios or Andlauer chairs the press conference Dorion is being moved to a diminished role (or less) regardless of what is said.

I think it will all work out. My only concern would be if Peter Chiarelli is involved. It was once reported that he was an Andlauer dark horse advisor and a candidate to replace Dorion.

I thnk ottawa has 24 hrs to decide if they want to give the 2024 or 25 pick to vegas.
Im not sure but i think if det did give that bost pick next draft it could be given to vegas as it would be an ott first rounder at that point . I really dont know though .

Now Detroit, because of the prediciment ottawa is in. They could use this scenario to their advantage. To keep a division rival hurting. By seeing when ottawa decides wich year to give vegas a pick . Then make their decision accordingly

Is it going to vegas or is it just forfeited? I had thought they just lose the pick.

The Sens will have 24 hours after each draft lottery in the next three years to decide if they keep their pick that season. I'm fairly certain the Boston/Detroit pick has no baring.
