With 50+ shots peppering him, I doubt Sammy wins that game. But, I didn't actually watch it, so... - GalacticStone
I'll say it: Woll stole it. if you go by what I saw, we deserved to lose. Kuemper is a sieve and lost the game for his team as much as Woll won it for it for us. I'd have been pissed with at least 2 of the goals Kuemper allowed if he were my goalie. There was a deft tip by JT and an absolute goddamned cannon from Matthews from the bottom of the circle that were excellent goals. The goal by Rielly was terrible and while Nylander's goal was a great individual effort, he didn't really get off a shot inasmuch as while on the rush he just chipped it over Kuemper, who was too low to make the save.
The Natural Stat Trick algorithm has the score at around 4-1 for Washington based on chances and quality of chances. I think it probably would have been fair to call it 3-2 Washington, but either way we came out ahead because of Woll.

How long until they sell off and re-re-re-re-re-rebuild?
If they actually completely fall apart this season, I think McJesus could actually reach the point that he asks out. - GreatGigInTheSky
I am of the opinion (and hey I've been wrong before) that this Oiler team has the framework to be a cup contender. I don't think as they are presently they're quite there - but they have some excellent talent and excellent role players along with a defensive group that's not that bad in the cap era. Nurse is overpaid, yes, as is Ceci, and their 5/6 guys could use some improvement . . . and their goaltending is currently below average.
If Connor Brown doesn't really find his game, they don't really play a top-6 - it's more of a top-5 with Draisaitl and McDavid cycling through the other line. That's a problem. Ekholm has not been as good or reliable as last year and Evan Bouchard has regressed terribly.
Now - if the team is undergoing radical style changes it could be causing problems. The coach may want to abandon this idiocy since they were 18-2-1 under the other system and looked fine against Vegas but Adin Hill stole the show.
So if Brown doesn't find his game, Ekholm doesn't return to form from his offseason surgery/injury and Bouchard continues to regress - it doesn't matter if Campbell and Skinner play better than last year, this team could be cooked before they turn on the oven.
McDavid will have 2 years left on his contract after this year and he already possesses a full NMC, so if he makes that decision - he'll pretty much hold all the cards. It still probably isn't a hand he plays until the final year of the deal anyway when their GM (if it's still Holland) is out of options. |

Of course Toronto trades guriel and their top prospect and they both go to the world series in the first year. Both being very impactful a long the way.
Its the Toronto way. |

Ya sammy probably lets in 2 more goals at least maybe 3.
Woll kept them in for sure.

Any time you see lopsided shot totals like that, something is going wrong for the team on the muddy end of that stick. 50+ shots is a sign of a leaky defense, an ineffective forecheck, or both.
Looks like Woll is the starter now until he or Sammy proves otherwise.

Woll was the difference. Glad to see it

Capitals outshot the Maple Leafs 37-17 and lost 4-1.
Both teams had 13 shots from the slot where all goals in the game were scored. One example of where shot totals can be misleading.
Should have bought a few more Woll RG rookies |

Woll had a good one last night. But the Buds don’t have a starter. Neither tender is a legit nhl starter so they have a tandem. Woll is playing better than Samsonov at the moment so he may start more frequently over the next week. But it’s not a situation where:
Woll is the starter
Samsonov is the backup |

Yes, thats obvious.
We have a 1a/1b situation. We ride the hot goalie, but organizationally, it seems they want woll to be the long term starter |

not sure who knows eh. This year doesn’t look like they have a choice (that went in summer) to make a difference in net with a move. I’m not sure they are projecting Woll to be that stand alone starter but keeping him with the organization as a member of the tandem depending how this season goes (in terms of gus play and Sammy’s) and I guess the summer (what’s available) for sure. |

Woll was selected 62nd - 14 spots behind the first goalie taken in 2016, Carter Hart. While Woll was the fifth goalie taken, Gustavsson in Minnesota is the only other one to show at the NHL level so far.
I think if the Leafs had serious misgivings about Woll's ability, they would have sought to lock down Sammy long-term. Having him on a shorter deal allows them to see what they have in Woll - in short, I think they believe in him.
Is it too soon to anoint him an NHL starter? Yes. It is. But I believe the organization is fairly bullish on him, and were it not for some injuries, Woll might have already arrived as an NHL mainstay a year or two earlier. |

I see what you’re saying man. Personally I don’t think Leafs (at least Tre) likes either that much.
I don’t think not giving Sammy a long term commitment had anything to do with Woll to be honest. Toronto me it was because of their uncertainty about Sammy. He isn’t proven and he’s proven to be up and down through his career so far and he’s pulled up lame at spots during his time in torornto (most recently the playoffs). It was more about Sammy than Woll in my opinion.

I hated it at the time (becauseit included moreno), but so many were confident varsho was amazing.
I hate it even more now....im sure varsho feels the same.
2023
Varsho: 116 hits, 20 hr, 61 rbi , war 3.9, career war 10. 5 this season - 3 years control
Gurriel: 144 hits, 24 hr, 82 rbi, war 3.0, career war 10.8 - FA
Even a one for one trade, that would be pretty close
Then you add in Moreno, the jays top prospect
Moreno: 97 hits, 7 hr, 50 rbi War 4.3
I understand guerriel had one down year before being traded and hes an FA now that will cost a pretty penny but to give up your best prospect for varsho...ugh. Even if varsho is amazing in the outfield.
Total runs saved
Varsho - 29
Guerriel - 14
Moreno - 20
Kirk - 17
And i know, fielding was a concern for the jays but hitting cost them this year. |

Sammy got 1 yr b/c that's all he deserved at the type of $$ he was going to get. He might be good, he might be poop, he might be exactly what he's been.
Woll has always been a good prospect with little experience and injury issues. Knock o wood ...he's finally got a run of health and he's showing some of that promise. |

According to some local Toronto sports media it was both.
The leafs didnt feel too confident in sammy, thought last year could be a one off and they hope woll would be their goalie of the future.
That could all change depending on who leads this team consistently |

important info, at the time of the trade Varsho had 27hr and was 4.9war Gurriel was 1.8 with 5hr, that is just silly to suggest. and a very important part with baseball trades is years of control, LG is a free agent in 2 weeks, the Jays get control of Varsho for 4 years.
they werent getting Varsho at the time for LG
so far its a loss for the Jays overall, but the results are far from over at this point

I don’t listen to word those folks say. Unless they are ex players who actually understand the game and/or have a line to the situation (via ex teammates coaches folks around the team). My exceptions sometimes is Friedman (maybe he said it factually or his opinion?) and The other guy I can’t think of his name at the moment…dark hair beardish first name Justin? He did work with Marlowe if I remember right and at least played in the ECHL or AHL

I’m not saying Woll = Bower here but man was he good last night.
I have this locker name plate from when he was a Marlie - might be time to put it up on the gear shelves in my garage.
I felt like it was bizzaro world last night - usually it’s the Leafs who badly outshoot their opponents and take the L after watching (or making) a relatively inexperienced goalie look like a perennial time all star.
I won’t lie it was nice to be on the other end of that but I don’t want it to continue because that poop won’t work come playoffs.

Yes, as previously mentioned, guerriel had an off year and was going to be an FA and varsho had years of control.
Varsho had one great year, prior to that he had 11 hr.
Guerriel had 2 previous seasons of 20 hrs. |

Speaking of weird goalies (haha)….Agree with all this man
Woll was good.
Absolutely goes the other way for Leafs usually!
Not a good thing to rely on playoff time at all.

You dont need to be an ex pro to "understand" the game imo. But whatever floats your boat.
Either way, that is what has been said. |
