In fairness, there are some misrepresentations there. I never liked the Ryan extension, but it happened a full 2 years after he was traded to the Senators. Now, you could argue that the 2 years that he played at $5.1M where he only scored 48/54 points should have been the rationale for letting him go as a UFA, but they certainly didn't sign him to a $50M/7yr contract sight-unseen. To that point, I'll give Dorion credit for only signing Tarasenko to a 1yr-deal... though I'd still like to know what the entire premise of the signing was, given that they'd already gotten Kubalik via the DeBrincat trade, and Pinto was the only NHL-level RFA on the roster without a contract.

I'm still wondering if there was some holdback waiting for a WJC domino to drop coupled pressure to sign Tara because he was being courted elsewhere. As you note, Dorion really painted himself into a corner with Pinto with that signing, despite it being relatively risk-free at one year. If it was a 4M tag, we'd probably have Pinto under contract.

In other news, with Norris *not* going on LTIR, what's the over/under we see him suit up as soon as this weekend? Plug Grieg in as 3C and we might just be able to hold out on Pinto, play with short rosters and accumulate the space needed to sign him before the December cutoff. It's risky and you have to imagine Pinto isn't psyched about any of this, but he definitely wants a 2 year deal at this point with a higher second year AAV, because he'll 100% want arb rights after this whole fiasco.

Pinto taking his toys from the sandbox and heading back home to play there. No more Ottawa playdates.

I have a feeling this impasse is going to go the limit to Dec. 1.

I would still target Kubalik as the tradeable option. .... 1 year $2.5 million. Goal scoring will not be a Senator issue. Keeping the puck out of our own net is the issue. Joseph helps out more. Plus Joseph at 3 years and $2.95 per , requires a sweetener. I don't think Kubalik would require a sweetener because of the scoring ability.
Can't trade Tarasenko .... NTC
If we trade Brannstrom, we save $2 million BUT we would need to bring up another d-man to replace him. Guenette of Klevin would cost $800-900,000 of that cap space so we wouldn't save enough to sign Pinto.

As I said , I would trade Brannstrom and Kubalik. Send MacEwen to minors.

Sign Pinto ... 2 years by $2.2 per year.
Bring up Smejkal
Bring up Klevin and Guenette

That would give Ottawa around $470-480,000 in cap space.
Ottawa would carry 2 goalies, 7 defencemen, and 13 forwards. This also assumes that Norris is back.

Brannstrom could go to San Jose for a draft pick (he could be the d-man to run their powerplay). Kubalik could go to Philly or Anaheim for scoring. We get back a draft pick or a bag of pucks.

Ya ya .... who cares about the DeBrincat deal at this point (and that Kubalik was a major part of that trade ..... or that Brannstrom was the last part of the Stone trade). I don't care about trades from the past. I want to concentrate on building the best team going forward.

And we keep all of our draft picks going forward.

In fairness we both had some misrepresentations here lol. I stand corrected, Bobby Ryan was acquired in July 2013, then resigned in Oct 2014 (just over a year later). He only played 1 season and the Sens gave him a huge deal.

Not signing players sight-unseen alright, but the fact remains the Sens give WAY too much $ for players that only play 1 season or so. I like Thomas Chabot but it does not like like the best allocation of funds. Before I get to that point, here's what it is:

Bobby Ryan - 56 games played - $ 50 Million (bad deal)
Colin White - 94 games played - $ 29 Million (bad deal)
Mathieu Joseph - 12 games played - $ 12 million (horrible so far)
Josh Norris - Not even 1.5 seasons - $64 Million (could tip the scales)

The Sens should be signing bridge deals. It worked in Tampa and other places - Sens should do the same. Sanderson, Stutzle, Tkachuk are amazing deals, which made sense - all top picks coming into their prime. Outside of that, the Sens need to make better decisions. I like the Tarasenko signing but I get your point on Kubalik - but not when you have this poor cap situation they created. Sens should've got more for what was originally a 7th overall pick !

Tarasenko only played more than Kastelic and MacEwen. He played less than Kelly. Got 2 primary assists tho.

This Sens team looked poised. I watched the whole game - the Sens controlled it from the get go, it felt like they were playing a beer league team. Forsberg was shaky early, rounded into form with some big saves late. Stu, Brady and Giroux have a ton of compete, it really shows on the ice. Chychrun has an absolute missile. Second line was noticeable, Grieg didn't seem out of place, bottom six held its own, Tarasenko showed some drive and had some good looks and dishes. Kubalik missed a couple sure chances... hope that's not a trend. But in general, all around a good game, albeit against a lesser opponent. Hopefully a sign of better things to come.

Having a big shot from the point can make such a difference to the offense, forces the opposing D-men to think. Especially on the PP. Been a while since the Sens had that.

On Kubalik, I think that's exactly what other fans warned us would happen.

Dreger says that Norris is playing on Sunday vs Tampa. No official word yet.
If true ...... would you keep Grieg centering the 2nd line and ease Norris in on the 3rd line. Drop down Chartier to 4rth line (he has been very capable at being on penalty kill). Then sit Kastelik as he is seemingly struggling a bit these days.

Was wondering...anyone know if a team can trade a player away, then trade immediately for him with 1/2 salary retained?

Like say we got to Philly and say we will trade Joseph, Boucher, Thomson and a 3rd and then they trade Joseph back to us with 1/2 salary retained immediately?

Not the first person to have thought of this, and apparently the NHL did many years back...
https://www.reddit.com/r/..._a_player_to_a_team_have/

No. From 50.5.e.iii.C.4
Reacquire as part of a Retained Salary Transaction the SPC of a Player who was on that Club's Reserve List within the past calendar year;

Illustration: If Club A Trades the SPC of a Player to Club B (the "Initial Trade"), Club B cannot subsequently Trade an SPC of such Player back to Club A within one (1) calendar year from the date of the Initial Trade and retain a portion of the Averaged Amount of that SPC pursuant to a Retained Salary Transaction. However, Club B may Trade an SPC of the Player back to Club A within one (1) calendar year from the date of the Initial Trade if Club B does not retain any portion of such Player's SPC.

Basically, you can only flip the player back to their original team within a calendar year if there is no salary retention.

its been 2 games and the sens have not impressed at all, they play like they did last year with little change, they get way too many penalties, tho its only 2 games, the Stanley cup favorites Oilers got beat again by the "lowly" canucks. (4 goals allowed by EDM on 16 shots, Yikes)

I realy like the fans at the CTC chanting we want Pinto, maybe that will force the idiot to finally trade someone (kubalik is the only logical choice) to get Pinto in the lineup.

Agree 100% same poop show as last year. Sens needed 3 PP goals and DJ had to play with 9Fs and 4Ds to beat one of the worst team and goalie in the league. And as a team they still can't defend. But the core loves DJ because they can cheat defensively to score goals and DJ lets them do it.

How did Dorion let Detroit dump Kubalik on the Sens in the Debrincat trade. You seriously couldn't just make it a top 10 protected 1st and a 2nd or 3rd and then Sebrango? Ottawa would be so well situated right now.

I dunno, it looked okay at the time. He could have targeted Berggren more intensely instead, but hindsight is 20/20. Meanwhile, Joseph is proving you shouldn't need to attach anything, let alone a first to move him. Maybe he's just a player that plays better when he feels like he's got something to prove.

That was a pretty tidy effort all around.

Maybe we should be looking to trade Kubalik to open some cap space up.

Pretty much everyone played well.

Korpisalo has more points than Chabot this season, lololol.

Tarasenko decided to play today. That was nice to see.
