I think it's far enough along that whatever the sticking point is, it's not enough to cause a breakdown in negotiations.

Educated guess, it's probably the structure of the bonus pay outs. I bet he wants something like what Fox and Werenski got. Heavy bonus pay out in the final 2 to 3 years of the deal.

We'll probably see a compromise where the AAV comes in slightly higher than the originally assumed 10 mil and the bonus payouts arent quite as heavy as what those other d-men got.

- Michael Ghofrani

I have an easy time thinking the term is a sticking point.

I'd really hope they aren't risking this deal over bonus structure, but the idea that Terry is so scarred by the Eichel and RoR deals that this stuff is significant is easy to imagine as well.

Probably even shorter, honestly. Like I said, 4x11 is about as uncomfortable as you could make it for the team.
- Lunaion

I'm not seeing a problem yet, I still think they get him for 8 years. Probably 11 million.

8 for 88. That's hard to advise a client to pass up IMO.

Like you said, 4 years would be rough. Same for 5....

I think term being a sticking point is too big a deal for there to be a leak of progress being made back in early July and for no national leaks to come out now from the usuals.

Like if Dahlin really wanted 4 or 5 years and the Sabres wanted to go 8 there's no way that wouldn't have been picked up by someone like Freidman.

It's most likely click bait, the Sabres have 0 leverage. The season goes well, which would be in large part to Dahlin, you have to pay him.

The season goes south, in typical fashion for teams with girgs on the roster, then you have to overpay Dahlin to stick around and not become another superstar to leave and win the Stanley cup the 1st year with his new team.

Well, let's watch this closely and lay solid money on the acquiring team if it happens

I think we're underestimating how washed EJ is.
- QuinnFan

Doesn't matter, I've watched Bryson. The amount of times I saw him turn into the boards and turtle and put the puck on his feet when a player got within 10 feet of him was staggering. You want to say EJ is bad and it's not going to go well, fine. Bryson is not the answer, ever.

I'm not going to overreact yet either. If it's not done by opening night, I'll worry more.

Would you be suprised to see power done sooner?

He feels like a 3 year deal as opposed to 8 years.

Just a hunch.

I don't see how bridging Power this summer makes any sense for either side.

Bingo. The Sabres options are:

Take it

Leave it

- Hank Balling

Or negotiate it, like they're doing. Everything we're hearing is he said she said and at this point we're just speculating. Until something solid comes out that the player wants to leave sooner than later I'm not worried about it. He's going to get a big contract for a big rate and it's going to shape the future of the team for years to come. Big deals take time.

Well for the player if he does well and can say now I want 12 million and I've earned that by being great on this team and the cap has gone up, that benefits Power.

Nothing really changed since that time. I dont believe their off season plans fell apart, I think there was nothing there for them/they are timid

Everyone and their grandma knew Matthews was not going for long term well before the Dahlin rumours.

Im 95% sure its structure related.

Conversely, there never was an 8 year deal and someone in the Sabres org leaked the 8 year, $10.5 deal to put pressure on Dahlin's side

No argument on the assessment, the difference will be EJ won't turtle, but he'll give away the puck just as often. Stillman maybe? He's been okay in preseason so far. I don't like him either, but it's kind of a battle of the bottom dwellers.
