Clocking in at 6-foot-2 and over 200 pounds, Lafferty brings a hardnosed game to the Canucks’ bottom six, a piece that’s been missing since Derek Dorsett’s career was cut short by injuries. But despite his bigger frame and physicality, Lafferty is best known for his speed, an element that the Canucks are especially deprived of across the current roster.
The 28-year-old also adds a right-handed centre to Rick Tocchet’s options and, combined with his quick skating and heavy-hitting, makes Lafferty an ideal option for the Canucks’ penalty-killing unit. Think Tyler Motte, but taller. Sounds like worth a look for a 5th round pick and could be turned into something better down the road if they play their cards right. |

Probably could have plucked him off waivers if you waited another hour... |

I’m not sure about probably, 10 teams have waiver rights before Vancouver and the 5th round pick is probably around 140-150 OA, not a big deal in my take.
The blog by NYNuck gave a pretty good outline of why Allvin traded that highly coveted 5th round pick. |

Lafftery will wear number 18. Last worn by the guy they put on waivers to pick him up, Jack Studnicka. They found a "try hard" guy who can actually play hockey as well. |

Plus they save money on paying scouts to scout 5th rounders. |

Wasn't that the same blogger that was just raving about Studnicka, in last week's blog?
At about each of those 2 players, they both have or had the same amount of points at the same age.
Anyways, I a tally haven't minded the few times I watched Lafferty, back in his Pittsburgh days. He plays hard and goes to the hard areas, unlike Joshua who does that 4 games a season. |

I like the argument that Soucy, Garland, Joshua are 5th round picks. So was Forsling. So was Ethan Bear, Tucker Poolman. 60, 5th rounders played at least 1 game last season from 2005 to 2020.
16 years of drafting in 5th round. 496 ish picks made in the 5th round. That's about 10% make the NHL. Probably less than half of those are any good honestly.
Giving up a later round pick on more than one occasion for an actual NHL player is probably a decent bet. |

The 5th round is 1 of the Canucks more successful rounds in that timeframe, as they have selected Forsling, Hutton, Gaudette and the great Frankie Corrado.
They had 17 5th round picks during that time, for a success rate of 23.5%.
Sad when your scouting team is better in the 5th round than the 4 rounds before then. |

You forgot Ben Hutton
Canucks are batting 50% for 1st rounders that have played 200 plus games. Through that time period. Just not enough have lived up to certain standards.
Scouting got much better during the Jim Benning period he was there. Impossible not too to better considering the Gillis era might have actually been the worst drafting period in hockey ever. |

Re: Ilya Mikheyev #Canucks Good evening, I wanted to clear up Ilya Mikheyev’s injury situation in Vancouver. Every player heals differently. He’s been working very hard to get ready, just needs a bit more time and then will be back in the lineup. The Canucks have been great in working with Ilya during his surgery and rehabilitation. I know he soon will be ready and hungry to play. #WeAreGoldStar! |

I mean, I don’t really care what your team does or doesn’t do, just that another team thought better of a coveted 5th round pick and the extra $300k than to keep him. A team, who has been desperately seeking that tough to play against type of player.
Maybe he’ll be better than whatever other 4th liner you sent down, but has the 4th line really been THE problem over the past several seasons? |

What a mistake it was letting him play through injury for a month plus before pulling him out of the line up. Now he's behind and not ready... just (frank)ing dumb.

Yes the 4th line HAS really been a problem. Of course not THE problem. Poorly phrased question. |
