Great move by SJ being able to unload that contract for 4 yrs with no retention. Look at EKs numbers the last 5 yrs and you will see last yr was an outlier. Pens add another defenseman who plays no D and have no goaltending. What's the over under on Letang, Crosby, Malkin and EK playing 240 games total?
A little shocked with Petry coming back, but getting rid of Hoffman was worth it.
Pitlick is a good little jack of all trades, but just opening up 2 roster spots is huge, ESPECIALLY getting Hoff out of the line up to make room for a kid.
Hopefully they can package Petry and Armia for a pick or 2.
Typical hero move by Dubas. Penguins failed to make the playoffs last season. Now their core is a year older. Still shaky in goal. Still little depth. But they have added a Defender who can put up points on a lousy team but cannot actually defend or play a committed team game.
Penguins should have blown it up. Now the sacrificed even more draft capital only to finish 10th or lower in the conference.

That part is funny - KD loaded up on depth. Like 8 depth signings worth.
KD then replaced Zucker with Reilly Smith. Upgraded LD by adding Graves. Loaded up on bottom 6 defensive forwards. Then the cherry - traded for the best offensive defensemen of this era without giving up significant assets and simultaneously shedding all of the Pens fatty contracts. But yea, what an awful summer.
to get rid of both granlund and petry for EK? and to shed the 2.75M, 3rd pairing overpaid defenseman? wow, thats houdini stuff right there.
yes, they brought in a 33 yr old defenseman signed for 4 more years. they also shed a 35 year old defenseman who was not great and not terrible but 6.25M. By trading petry, granlund, rutta, desmith, they actually gained more than $3M in cap space. they are now under the cap. previously, they were at 86.7M. By losing 35 yr old petry and 33 year old rutta, now 23 yr old smith can play. i'd also prefer will butcher over chad ruhwedel.
saddled with petry, rutta, granlund coming in, dubas did the best he could to get out from under those contracts. it was not a good hand to start with. he got rid of 4 contracts for 1, saved $3M and he really improved the AHL club.
MTL piece of this makes no sense. They agreed to take all of Pitt’s trash salary in exchange for a 2nd round pick??? - AxlRose91
They dumped Hoffman's salary and received an NHL goalie as well as the second rounder not to mention Petry who will be flipped for future assets. How do you not like this deal for Montreal?

EK had 1 good offensive season in last 5 look up the stats. SJ was smart unloading that contract of a 33 yr old who will likely never repeat last yr and likely not play a whole season. Pens betting on EK being the player of last yr and staying healthy. Huge risk at 10Mx 4 yrs but I get it trying to field a competitive team for Sid. See a lot of IR time for the big 4. Last yr was a an anomaly based of their history the last few yrs

You're just saying the same sh!t and repeating your hopes and dreams for the Pens all over this website hahaha. You never did tell us where the Penguins touched you inappropriately, to have this much hate. You should worry about your own Rangers first.

The future is uncertain, sure. Of course it’s a risk. Betting on an elite talent maintaining form playing alongside other elite talents is a risk worth taking. Especially at this phase of the core’s run.
But to shed 99% of the Pens’ bloated contracts (Petry, Grandlund, Rutta, DeSmith), not give up any significant assets (a couple lottery tickets?) and replace those contracts with an elite talent? Really no argument here.
Speculating on future injury is a desperate reach to find flaws in the trade. No one knows what will happen. Downplaying Karlsson’s impact on the ice is a funny take too.

Hey I am happy the Pens got EK...Told you all along I wanted to see them get him. You added another old 10M player who plays no defense which should work out well with Pens goaltending. Happy for you guys

Look at his stats last 5 yrs. If he gives Pens what he gave SJ last yr and stays healthy it's a good deal. If he does what he did prior 3 to 4 yrs it will be a 10M albatross.. I get taking the risk though nothing to lose and he could make Pens a bubble playoff team.

Another 10 million dollar player? They rid of their second highest paid player to Sid in Petry (6.25 mill) to make this happen. Sid is 8.7 mill per.

If he gets 50-60 points on top of his ability to get the puck up the ice then their D is massively upgraded from last season. Not to mention Graves instead of Dumoulin...and now Ty Smith, who was fantastic for them when called up but couldn't stay up do to cap complications, other players waiver statuses and roster limits can now have a full time job on the 3rd pair.
Okay somebody needs to stop all the madness and try to explain what is happening in the Montreal front office. Make no mistake, they blew the draft two years ago and again this year. Now they are acting as garbage man to clean up the messy parts of the San Jose/Pittsburgh trade
I believe the problem is a GM who believes he is the smartest guy in the room and always wants to travel the road less traveled. Always be careful of the guy in any business who wants to be terminally different. This all looks really ugly from the Canadiens angle.

Anything that makes you feel better. A d corps that is average at best to go along with below average injury prone goaltending. Formula for a bubble playoff team at best

You're the one trying to feel better about an opposing team's trade. Its all gravy for Pens fans now...even if they miss the playoffs again...what odds...this core has 3 cups. Should be some entertaining games with this roster setup and after all that is what the NHL is, entertainment. The Rangers don't have one since 1994 and their 1st and 2nd overall picks of the last 4 years are trending towards being busts...your team, you were pounding your chest for making the ECF the season before and saying they were up and coming and going to be a powerhouse for years now bowed out to one of the youngest teams in the league in the first round haha
"LOL Pens are going to be relegated to the Senior league soon. Good job by Grier getting rid of that monstrosity Co tract and actual getting value back for a guy who didn't wanna be there. Dubas continues to Dubas! Remaking the Pens in his image... they will be the softest team in sports!!"
How could they get any softer, they were already the softest team in the NHL before...
Laugh all you want but the team has talent. It has two problems:
1) age which will slow them down in a fast league
2) suspect goaltending. Still cant trust Jarry

Actually, I think Montreal did well in this transaction, got rid of 2 players that they wanted to unload, didn't even retain any of their salaries & even got a top 4 D-man who they can trade for more assets, plus another NHL goalie & kid for the farm team. Very good asset management. I'd say Montreal made out the best of the 3 teams involved.
