That was also a thing. I believe it became a thing after Rodin was injured early in the season, with Rodin I remember they were killing it in the preseason against weak competition.

Yes and still trying to figure out that first line for now and the future.

Any guesses?

The $6.5 million annually is a high price to pay to protect their prized possession Rasmus Sandin, but Wilson has good enough value elsewhere (right now at least 🤷‍♂️)

Shayna
@hayyyshayyy

Extending Wilson for seven years (starting in 2024) at $6.5M is a choice. An overpriced choice that doesn't look great before the contract even starts.

Yeah, at that cap hit I would have traded him 100%

Makes me think of Lucic, peaked late 20s and it was a swift decline after that.

So the JTM extension is good? Bo might even look good compared to this signing.

Last week I looked at the 10 worst contracts in hockey. Tom Wilson's new deal would've ranked fifth.

Exactly what I was thinking. This contract doesn't kick in until he's 30 and takes him to 37. The way he plays, there is no way you can get that kind of value out of him.

People had suggested trading for him. You just can't count on a physical player like Wilson to last into his 30s. You need those guys young.

No. Not always. Power wingers don't have to be the fastest on the ice to begin with. Neither do big positional Dmen.

In relative terms, I expect JTM is going to produce in line with his contract for the first 4 years. Then I expect a decline where he increasingly underproducing for his value. The Wilson contract, I'd expect him to be near value in year one and then underperform in a consistent fashion until he sits on LTIR.

GM's bs and will say "whatever the last couple years the player will be on LTIR anyways."

They need to change the rules for LTIR. Teams aren't breaking the rules currently going into the playoffs with an "injured" player and use all of his cap space to improve their teams but to magically be healthy for the first game of the playoffs.

Should be a penalty that if a player isn't on active roster at the TDL but "will be back for playoffs" that you can only use half of their cap space or the "injured" player has to miss the first 4 games of the playoffs or something.

That would alter the cap management for Cup winners they have used that LTIR cheat so well.
